Worthy of Offerings Dedicated to the Gods (1st)
“අට්ඨහි, භික්ඛවේ, ධම්මේහි සමන්නාගතෝ භික්ඛු ආහුනේය්යෝ හෝති පාහුනේය්යෝ දක්ඛිණේය්යෝ අඤ්ජලිකරණීයෝ අනුත්තරං පුඤ්ඤක්ඛේත්තං ලෝකස්ස. කතමේහි අට්ඨහි?
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with eight qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world. What eight?
ඉධ, භික්ඛවේ, භික්ඛු සීලවා හෝති …පේ… සමාදාය සික්ඛති සික්ඛාපදේසු;
It’s when a bhikkhu is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.
බහුස්සුතෝ හෝති …පේ… දිට්ඨියා සුප්පටිවිද්ධා;
They’re learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s totally full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reciting them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.
කල්යාණමිත්තෝ හෝති කල්යාණසහායෝ කල්යාණසම්පවඞ්කෝ;
They have good friends, companions, and associates.
සම්මාදිට්ඨිකෝ හෝති, සම්මාදස්සනේන සමන්නාගතෝ;
They have right view, possessing right perspective.
චතුන්නං ඣානානං ආභිචේතසිකානං දිට්ඨධම්මසුඛවිහාරානං නිකාමලාභී හෝති අකිච්ඡලාභී අකසිරලාභී;
They get the four jhānas—blissful meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.
අනේකවිහිතං පුබ්බේනිවාසං අනුස්සරති, සේය්යථිදං—ඒකම්පි ජාතිං ද්වේපි ජාතියෝ …පේ… ඉති සාකාරං සෞද්දේසං අනේකවිහිතං පුබ්බේනිවාසං අනුස්සරති;
They recollect many kinds of past lives, with features and details.
දිබ්බේන චක්ඛුනා විසුද්ධේන අතික්කන්තමානුසකේන …පේ… යථාකම්මූපගේ සත්තේ පජානාති;
With clairvoyance that is purified and surpasses the human, they see how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.
ආසවානං ඛයා …පේ… සච්ඡිකත්වා උපසම්පජ්ජ විහරති.
They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
A bhikkhu with these eight qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.”
සත්තමං.
