    Future Perils (1st)

    “पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, अनागतभयानि सम्पस्समानेन अलमेव आरञ्ञिकेन भिक्खुना अप्पमत्तेन आतापिना पहितत्तेन विहरितुं अप्पत्तस्स पत्तिया अनधिगतस्स अधिगमाय असच्छिकतस्स सच्छिकिरियाय।

    “Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, anāgatabhayāni sampassamānena alameva āraññikena bhikkhunā appamattena ātāpinā pahitattena viharituṁ appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya.

    “Bhikkhus, seeing these five future perils is quite enough for a wilderness bhikkhu to meditate diligently, keenly, and resolutely for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.

    कतमानि पञ्च? इध, भिक्खवे, आरञ्ञिको भिक्खु इति पटिसञ्चिक्खति: ‘अहं खो एतरहि एकको अरञ्ञे विहरामि। एककं खो पन मं अरञ्ञे विहरन्तं अहि वा मं डंसेय्य, विच्छिको वा मं डंसेय्य, सतपदी वा मं डंसेय्य, तेन मे अस्स कालङ्किरिया, सो ममस्स अन्तरायो; हन्दाहं वीरियं आरभामि अप्पत्तस्स पत्तिया अनधिगतस्स अधिगमाय असच्छिकतस्स सच्छिकिरियायाऽति। इदं, भिक्खवे, पठमं अनागतभयं सम्पस्समानेन अलमेव आरञ्ञिकेन भिक्खुना अप्पमत्तेन आतापिना पहितत्तेन विहरितुं अप्पत्तस्स पत्तिया अनधिगतस्स अधिगमाय असच्छिकतस्स सच्छिकिरियाय।

    Katamāni pañca? Idha, bhikkhave, āraññiko bhikkhu iti paṭisañcikkhati: ‘ahaṁ kho etarahi ekako araññe viharāmi. Ekakaṁ kho pana maṁ1 araññe viharantaṁ ahi vā maṁ ḍaṁseyya, vicchiko vā maṁ ḍaṁseyya, satapadī vā maṁ ḍaṁseyya, tena me assa kālaṅkiriyā, so mamassa antarāyo; handāhaṁ vīriyaṁ ārabhāmi appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāyā’ti. Idaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ sampassamānena alameva āraññikena bhikkhunā appamattena ātāpinā pahitattena viharituṁ appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya.

    What five? Firstly, a wilderness bhikkhu reflects: ‘Currently I’m living alone in a wilderness. While living here alone I might get bitten by a snake, a scorpion, or a centipede. And if I died from that it would be an obstacle to my progress. I’d better rouse up energy for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.’ This is the first future peril …

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, आरञ्ञिको भिक्खु इति पटिसञ्चिक्खति: ‘अहं खो एतरहि एकको अरञ्ञे विहरामि। एकको खो पनाहं अरञ्ञे विहरन्तो उपक्खलित्वा वा पपतेय्यं, भत्तं वा भुत्तं मे ब्यापज्जेय्य, पित्तं वा मे कुप्पेय्य, सेम्हं वा मे कुप्पेय्य, सत्थका वा मे वाता कुप्पेय्युं, तेन मे अस्स कालङ्किरिया, सो ममस्स अन्तरायो; हन्दाहं वीरियं आरभामि अप्पत्तस्स पत्तिया अनधिगतस्स अधिगमाय असच्छिकतस्स सच्छिकिरियायाऽति। इदं, भिक्खवे, दुतियं अनागतभयं सम्पस्समानेन अलमेव आरञ्ञिकेन भिक्खुना अप्पमत्तेन आतापिना पहितत्तेन विहरितुं अप्पत्तस्स पत्तिया अनधिगतस्स अधिगमाय असच्छिकतस्स सच्छिकिरियाय।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, āraññiko bhikkhu iti paṭisañcikkhati: ‘ahaṁ kho etarahi ekako araññe viharāmi. Ekako kho panāhaṁ araññe viharanto upakkhalitvā vā papateyyaṁ, bhattaṁ vā bhuttaṁ me byāpajjeyya, pittaṁ vā me kuppeyya, semhaṁ vā me kuppeyya, satthakā vā me vātā kuppeyyuṁ, tena me assa kālaṅkiriyā, so mamassa antarāyo; handāhaṁ vīriyaṁ ārabhāmi appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāyā’ti. Idaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ sampassamānena alameva āraññikena bhikkhunā appamattena ātāpinā pahitattena viharituṁ appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya.

    Furthermore, a wilderness bhikkhu reflects: ‘Currently I’m living alone in a wilderness. While living here alone I might stumble and fall, or get food poisoning, or my bile or phlegm or stabbing wind might get upset. And if I died from that it would be an obstacle to my progress. I’d better rouse up energy for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.’ This is the second future peril …

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, आरञ्ञिको भिक्खु इति पटिसञ्चिक्खति: ‘अहं खो एतरहि एकको अरञ्ञे विहरामि। एकको खो पनाहं अरञ्ञे विहरन्तो वाळेहि समागच्छेय्यं, सीहेन वा ब्यग्घेन वा दीपिना वा अच्छेन वा तरच्छेन वा, ते मं जीविता वोरोपेय्युं, तेन मे अस्स कालङ्किरिया, सो ममस्स अन्तरायो; हन्दाहं वीरियं आरभामि अप्पत्तस्स पत्तिया अनधिगतस्स अधिगमाय असच्छिकतस्स सच्छिकिरियायाऽति। इदं, भिक्खवे, ततियं अनागतभयं सम्पस्समानेन अलमेव आरञ्ञिकेन भिक्खुना अप्पमत्तेन आतापिना पहितत्तेन विहरितुं अप्पत्तस्स पत्तिया अनधिगतस्स अधिगमाय असच्छिकतस्स सच्छिकिरियाय।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, āraññiko bhikkhu iti paṭisañcikkhati: ‘ahaṁ kho etarahi ekako araññe viharāmi. Ekako kho panāhaṁ araññe viharanto vāḷehi samāgaccheyyaṁ, sīhena vā byagghena vā dīpinā vā acchena vā taracchena vā, te maṁ jīvitā voropeyyuṁ, tena me assa kālaṅkiriyā, so mamassa antarāyo; handāhaṁ vīriyaṁ ārabhāmi appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāyā’ti. Idaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ sampassamānena alameva āraññikena bhikkhunā appamattena ātāpinā pahitattena viharituṁ appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya.

    Furthermore, a wilderness bhikkhu reflects: ‘Currently I’m living alone in a wilderness. While living here alone I might encounter wild beasts—a lion, a tiger, a leopard, a bear, or a hyena—which might take my life. And if I died from that it would be an obstacle to my progress. I’d better rouse up energy for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.’ This is the third future peril …

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, आरञ्ञिको भिक्खु इति पटिसञ्चिक्खति: ‘अहं खो एतरहि एकको अरञ्ञे विहरामि। एकको खो पनाहं अरञ्ञे विहरन्तो माणवेहि समागच्छेय्यं कतकम्मेहि वा अकतकम्मेहि वा, ते मं जीविता वोरोपेय्युं, तेन मे अस्स कालङ्किरिया, सो ममस्स अन्तरायो; हन्दाहं वीरियं आरभामि अप्पत्तस्स पत्तिया अनधिगतस्स अधिगमाय असच्छिकतस्स सच्छिकिरियायाऽति। इदं, भिक्खवे, चतुत्थं अनागतभयं सम्पस्समानेन अलमेव आरञ्ञिकेन भिक्खुना अप्पमत्तेन आतापिना पहितत्तेन विहरितुं अप्पत्तस्स पत्तिया अनधिगतस्स अधिगमाय असच्छिकतस्स सच्छिकिरियाय।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, āraññiko bhikkhu iti paṭisañcikkhati: ‘ahaṁ kho etarahi ekako araññe viharāmi. Ekako kho panāhaṁ araññe viharanto māṇavehi samāgaccheyyaṁ katakammehi vā akatakammehi vā, te maṁ jīvitā voropeyyuṁ, tena me assa kālaṅkiriyā, so mamassa antarāyo; handāhaṁ vīriyaṁ ārabhāmi appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāyā’ti. Idaṁ, bhikkhave, catutthaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ sampassamānena alameva āraññikena bhikkhunā appamattena ātāpinā pahitattena viharituṁ appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya.

    Furthermore, a wilderness bhikkhu reflects: ‘Currently I’m living alone in a wilderness. While living here alone I might encounter youths escaping a crime or on their way to commit one, and they might take my life. And if I died from that it would be an obstacle to my progress. I’d better rouse up energy for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.’ This is the fourth future peril …

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, आरञ्ञिको भिक्खु इति पटिसञ्चिक्खति: ‘अहं खो एतरहि एकको अरञ्ञे विहरामि। सन्ति खो पनारञ्ञे वाळा अमनुस्सा, ते मं जीविता वोरोपेय्युं, तेन मे अस्स कालङ्किरिया, सो ममस्स अन्तरायो; हन्दाहं वीरियं आरभामि अप्पत्तस्स पत्तिया अनधिगतस्स अधिगमाय असच्छिकतस्स सच्छिकिरियायाऽति। इदं, भिक्खवे, पञ्चमं अनागतभयं सम्पस्समानेन अलमेव आरञ्ञिकेन भिक्खुना अप्पमत्तेन आतापिना पहितत्तेन विहरितुं अप्पत्तस्स पत्तिया अनधिगतस्स अधिगमाय असच्छिकतस्स सच्छिकिरियाय।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, āraññiko bhikkhu iti paṭisañcikkhati: ‘ahaṁ kho etarahi ekako araññe viharāmi. Santi kho panāraññe2 vāḷā amanussā, te maṁ jīvitā voropeyyuṁ, tena me assa kālaṅkiriyā, so mamassa antarāyo; handāhaṁ vīriyaṁ ārabhāmi appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāyā’ti. Idaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ sampassamānena alameva āraññikena bhikkhunā appamattena ātāpinā pahitattena viharituṁ appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya.

    Furthermore, a wilderness bhikkhu reflects: ‘Currently I’m living alone in a wilderness. But in a wilderness there are savage monsters who might take my life. And if I died from that it would be an obstacle to my progress. I’d better rouse up energy for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.’ This is the fifth future peril …

    इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च अनागतभयानि सम्पस्समानेन अलमेव आरञ्ञिकेन भिक्खुना अप्पमत्तेन आतापिना पहितत्तेन विहरितुं अप्पत्तस्स पत्तिया अनधिगतस्स अधिगमाय असच्छिकतस्स सच्छिकिरियाया”ति।

    Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca anāgatabhayāni sampassamānena alameva āraññikena bhikkhunā appamattena ātāpinā pahitattena viharituṁ appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāyā”ti.

    These are the five future perils, seeing which is quite enough for a wilderness bhikkhu to meditate diligently, keenly, and resolutely for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.”
