“अट्ठिमानि, भिक्खवे, बलानि। कतमानि अट्ठ? रुण्णबला, भिक्खवे, दारका, कोधबला मातुगामा, आवुधबला चोरा, इस्सरियबला राजानो, उज्झत्तिबला बाला, निज्झत्तिबला पण्डिता, पटिसङ्खानबला बहुस्सुता, खन्तिबला समणब्राह्मणा—इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, अट्ठ बलानी”ति।
“Aṭṭhimāni, bhikkhave, balāni. Katamāni aṭṭha? Ruṇṇabalā, bhikkhave, dārakā, kodhabalā mātugāmā, āvudhabalā corā, issariyabalā rājāno, ujjhattibalā bālā, nijjhattibalā paṇḍitā, paṭisaṅkhānabalā bahussutā, khantibalā samaṇabrāhmaṇā—imāni kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭha balānī”ti.
“Bhikkhus, there are these eight powers. What eight? Crying is the power of babies. Anger is the power of females. Weapons are the power of bandits. Authority is the power of rulers. Complaining is the power of fools. Reason is the power of the astute. Reflection is the power of the learned. Patience is the power of ascetics and brahmins. These are the eight powers.”
