Paṭhamahatthapādopamasutta
The Simile of Hands and Feet (1st)
“हत्थेसु, भिक्खवे, सति आदाननिक्खेपनं पञ्ञायति; पादेसु सति अभिक्कमपटिक्कमो पञ्ञायति; पब्बेसु सति समिञ्जनपसारणं पञ्ञायति; कुच्छिस्मिं सति जिघच्छा पिपासा पञ्ञायति।
“Hatthesu, bhikkhave, sati ādānanikkhepanaṁ paññāyati; pādesu sati abhikkamapaṭikkamo paññāyati; pabbesu sati samiñjanapasāraṇaṁ paññāyati; kucchismiṁ sati jighacchā pipāsā paññāyati.
“Bhikkhus, when there are hands, picking up and putting down are found. When there are feet, coming and going are found. When there are joints, contracting and extending are found. When there’s a belly, hunger and thirst are found.
एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, चक्खुस्मिं सति चक्खुसम्फस्सपच्चया उप्पज्जति अज्झत्तं सुखं दुक्खं …पे… जिव्हाय सति जिव्हासम्फस्सपच्चया उप्पज्जति अज्झत्तं सुखं दुक्खं …पे… मनस्मिं सति मनोसम्फस्सपच्चया उप्पज्जति अज्झत्तं सुखं दुक्खं …पे…।
Evameva kho, bhikkhave, cakkhusmiṁ sati cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati ajjhattaṁ sukhaṁ dukkhaṁ …pe… jivhāya sati jivhāsamphassapaccayā uppajjati ajjhattaṁ sukhaṁ dukkhaṁ …pe… manasmiṁ sati manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati ajjhattaṁ sukhaṁ dukkhaṁ …pe….
In the same way, when there’s an eye, pleasure and pain arise internally conditioned by eye contact. When there’s an ear … nose … tongue … body … mind, pleasure and pain arise internally conditioned by mind contact.
