“पापञ्च वो, भिक्खवे, देसेस्सामि, पापेन पापतरञ्च; कल्याणञ्च, कल्याणेन कल्याणतरञ्च। तं सुणाथ …पे…।
“Pāpañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, pāpena pāpatarañca; kalyāṇañca, kalyāṇena kalyāṇatarañca. Taṁ suṇātha …pe….
“Bhikkhus, I will teach you who’s bad and who’s worse, who’s good and who’s better.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, पापो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पाणातिपाती होति …पे… मिच्छादिट्ठिको होति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, पापो।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pāpo? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāṇātipātī hoti …pe… micchādiṭṭhiko hoti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, pāpo.
And who’s bad? It’s someone who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And they’re covetous, malicious, with wrong view. This is called bad.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, पापेन पापतरो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो अत्तना च पाणातिपाती होति, परञ्च पाणातिपाते समादपेति …पे… अत्तना च मिच्छादिट्ठिको होति, परञ्च मिच्छादिट्ठिया समादपेति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, पापेन पापतरो।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pāpena pāpataro? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca pāṇātipātī hoti, parañca pāṇātipāte samādapeti …pe… attanā ca micchādiṭṭhiko hoti, parañca micchādiṭṭhiyā samādapeti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, pāpena pāpataro.
And who’s worse? It’s someone who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. They’re covetous, malicious, with wrong view. And they encourage others to do these things. This is called worse.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, कल्याणो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पाणातिपाता पटिविरतो होति …पे… सम्मादिट्ठिको होति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, कल्याणो।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, kalyāṇo? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti …pe… sammādiṭṭhiko hoti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kalyāṇo.
And who’s good? It’s someone who doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct. They don’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And they’re contented, kind-hearted, with right view. This is called good.

“Katamo ca, bhikkhave, kalyāṇena kalyāṇataro? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti, parañca pāṇātipātā veramaṇiyā samādapeti …pe… attanā ca sammādiṭṭhiko hoti, parañca sammādiṭṭhiyā samādapeti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kalyāṇena kalyāṇataro”ti.
And who’s better? It’s someone who doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct. They don’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. They’re contented, kind-hearted, with right view. And they encourage others to do these things. This is called better.”
