Textual Analysis (1st)
“सत्तहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु नचिरस्सेव चतस्सो पटिसम्भिदा सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरेय्य। कतमेहि सत्तहि?
“Sattahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu nacirasseva catasso paṭisambhidā sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyya. Katamehi sattahi?
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with seven qualities will soon realize the four kinds of textual analysis and live having achieved them with their own insight. What seven?
इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु ‘इदं मे चेतसो लीनत्तन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति;
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ‘idaṁ me cetaso līnattan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti;
It’s when a bhikkhu truly understands: ‘This is mental sluggishness’.
अज्झत्तं सङ्खित्तं वा चित्तं ‘अज्झत्तं मे सङ्खित्तं चित्तन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति;
ajjhattaṁ saṅkhittaṁ vā cittaṁ ‘ajjhattaṁ me saṅkhittaṁ cittan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti;
They truly understand internally constricted mind as ‘internally constricted mind’.
बहिद्धा विक्खित्तं वा चित्तं ‘बहिद्धा मे विक्खित्तं चित्तन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति;
bahiddhā vikkhittaṁ vā cittaṁ ‘bahiddhā me vikkhittaṁ cittan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti;
They truly understand externally scattered mind as ‘externally scattered mind’.
तस्स विदिता वेदना उप्पज्जन्ति, विदिता उपट्ठहन्ति, विदिता अब्भत्थं गच्छन्ति;
tassa viditā vedanā uppajjanti, viditā upaṭṭhahanti, viditā abbhatthaṁ gacchanti;
They know feelings as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away.
विदिता सञ्ञा उप्पज्जन्ति, विदिता उपट्ठहन्ति, विदिता अब्भत्थं गच्छन्ति;
viditā saññā uppajjanti, viditā upaṭṭhahanti, viditā abbhatthaṁ gacchanti;
They know perceptions as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away.
विदिता वितक्का उप्पज्जन्ति, विदिता उपट्ठहन्ति, विदिता अब्भत्थं गच्छन्ति;
viditā vitakkā uppajjanti, viditā upaṭṭhahanti, viditā abbhatthaṁ gacchanti;
They know thoughts as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away.
सप्पायासप्पायेसु खो पनस्स धम्मेसु हीनप्पणीतेसु कण्हसुक्कसप्पटिभागेसु निमित्तं सुग्गहितं होति सुमनसिकतं सूपधारितं सुप्पटिविद्धं पञ्ञाय।
sappāyāsappāyesu kho panassa dhammesu hīnappaṇītesu kaṇhasukkasappaṭibhāgesu nimittaṁ suggahitaṁ hoti sumanasikataṁ sūpadhāritaṁ suppaṭividdhaṁ paññāya.
The patterns of qualities—suitable or unsuitable, inferior or superior, or those on the side of dark or bright—are properly grasped, focused on, borne in mind, and comprehended with wisdom.
इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, सत्तहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु नचिरस्सेव चतस्सो पटिसम्भिदा सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरेय्या”ति।
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, sattahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu nacirasseva catasso paṭisambhidā sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyyā”ti.
A bhikkhu with these seven qualities will soon realize the four kinds of textual analysis and live having achieved them with their own insight.”
