    Aspiration (1st)

    “पञ्चहि, भिक्खवे, अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो रञ्ञो खत्तियस्स मुद्धावसित्तस्स जेट्ठो पुत्तो रज्जं पत्थेति। कतमेहि पञ्चहि?

    “Pañcahi, bhikkhave, aṅgehi samannāgato rañño khattiyassa muddhāvasittassa jeṭṭho putto rajjaṁ pattheti. Katamehi pañcahi?

    “Bhikkhus, an anointed aristocratic king’s eldest son with five factors aspires to kingship. What five?

    इध, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो खत्तियस्स मुद्धावसित्तस्स जेट्ठो पुत्तो उभतो सुजातो होति मातितो च पितितो च, संसुद्धगहणिको, याव सत्तमा पितामहयुगा अक्खित्तो अनुपक्कुट्ठो जातिवादेन;

    Idha, bhikkhave, rañño khattiyassa muddhāvasittassa jeṭṭho putto ubhato sujāto hoti mātito ca pitito ca, saṁsuddhagahaṇiko, yāva sattamā pitāmahayugā akkhitto anupakkuṭṭho jātivādena;

    It’s when an anointed aristocratic king’s eldest son is well born on both his mother’s and father’s side, of pure descent, with irrefutable and impeccable genealogy back to the seventh paternal generation.

    अभिरूपो होति दस्सनीयो पासादिको परमाय वण्णपोक्खरताय समन्नागतो;

    abhirūpo hoti dassanīyo pāsādiko paramāya vaṇṇapokkharatāya samannāgato;

    He is attractive, good-looking, lovely, of surpassing beauty.

    मातापितूनं पियो होति मनापो;

    mātāpitūnaṁ piyo hoti manāpo;

    He is dear and beloved to his parents.

    नेगमजानपदस्स पियो होति मनापो;

    negamajānapadassa piyo hoti manāpo;

    He is dear and beloved to the people of town and country.

    यानि तानि रञ्ञं खत्तियानं मुद्धावसित्तानं सिप्पट्ठानानि हत्थिस्मिं वा अस्सस्मिं वा रथस्मिं वा धनुस्मिं वा थरुस्मिं वा तत्थ सिक्खितो होति अनवयो।

    yāni tāni raññaṁ khattiyānaṁ muddhāvasittānaṁ sippaṭṭhānāni hatthismiṁ vā assasmiṁ vā rathasmiṁ vā dhanusmiṁ vā tharusmiṁ vā tattha sikkhito hoti anavayo.

    He is trained and skilled in the arts of anointed aristocratic kings, such as elephant riding, horse riding, driving a chariot, archery, and swordsmanship.

    तस्स एवं होति: ‘अहं खोम्हि उभतो सुजातो मातितो च पितितो च, संसुद्धगहणिको, याव सत्तमा पितामहयुगा अक्खित्तो अनुपक्कुट्ठो जातिवादेन। कस्माहं रज्जं न पत्थेय्यं। अहं खोम्हि अभिरूपो दस्सनीयो पासादिको परमाय वण्णपोक्खरताय समन्नागतो। कस्माहं रज्जं न पत्थेय्यं। अहं खोम्हि मातापितूनं पियो मनापो। कस्माहं रज्जं न पत्थेय्यं। अहं खोम्हि नेगमजानपदस्स पियो मनापो। कस्माहं रज्जं न पत्थेय्यं। अहं खोम्हि यानि तानि रञ्ञं खत्तियानं मुद्धावसित्तानं सिप्पट्ठानानि हत्थिस्मिं वा अस्सस्मिं वा रथस्मिं वा धनुस्मिं वा थरुस्मिं वा, तत्थ सिक्खितो अनवयो। कस्माहं रज्जं न पत्थेय्यन्ऽति। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो रञ्ञो खत्तियस्स मुद्धावसित्तस्स जेट्ठो पुत्तो रज्जं पत्थेति।

    Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘ahaṁ khomhi ubhato sujāto mātito ca pitito ca, saṁsuddhagahaṇiko, yāva sattamā pitāmahayugā akkhitto anupakkuṭṭho jātivādena. Kasmāhaṁ rajjaṁ na pattheyyaṁ. Ahaṁ khomhi abhirūpo dassanīyo pāsādiko paramāya vaṇṇapokkharatāya samannāgato. Kasmāhaṁ rajjaṁ na pattheyyaṁ. Ahaṁ khomhi mātāpitūnaṁ piyo manāpo. Kasmāhaṁ rajjaṁ na pattheyyaṁ. Ahaṁ khomhi negamajānapadassa piyo manāpo. Kasmāhaṁ rajjaṁ na pattheyyaṁ. Ahaṁ khomhi yāni tāni raññaṁ khattiyānaṁ muddhāvasittānaṁ sippaṭṭhānāni hatthismiṁ vā assasmiṁ vā rathasmiṁ vā dhanusmiṁ vā tharusmiṁ vā, tattha1 sikkhito anavayo. Kasmāhaṁ rajjaṁ na pattheyyan’ti. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi aṅgehi samannāgato rañño khattiyassa muddhāvasittassa jeṭṭho putto rajjaṁ pattheti.

    He thinks: ‘I’m well born on both my mother’s and father’s side, of pure descent, with irrefutable and impeccable genealogy back to the seventh paternal generation. Why shouldn’t I aspire to kingship? I’m attractive, good-looking, lovely, of surpassing beauty. Why shouldn’t I aspire to kingship? I’m dear and beloved to my parents. Why shouldn’t I aspire to kingship? I’m dear and beloved to the people of town and country. Why shouldn’t I aspire to kingship? I’m trained and skilled in the arts of anointed aristocratic kings, such as elephant riding, horse riding, driving a chariot, archery, and swordsmanship. Why shouldn’t I aspire to kingship?’ An anointed aristocratic king’s eldest son with these five factors aspires to kingship.

    एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु आसवानं खयं पत्थेति। कतमेहि पञ्चहि?

    Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ pattheti. Katamehi pañcahi?

    In the same way, a bhikkhu with five qualities aspires to end the defilements. What five?

    इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सद्धो होति, सद्दहति तथागतस्स बोधिं: ‘इतिपि सो भगवा अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो विज्जाचरणसम्पन्नो सुगतो लोकविदू अनुत्तरो पुरिसदम्मसारथि सत्था देवमनुस्सानं बुद्धो भगवाऽति।

    Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiṁ: ‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti.

    It’s when a bhikkhu has faith in the Realized One’s awakening: ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’

    अप्पाबाधो होति अप्पातङ्को, समवेपाकिनिया गहणिया समन्नागतो नातिसीताय नाच्चुण्हाय मज्झिमाय पधानक्खमाय;

    Appābādho hoti appātaṅko, samavepākiniyā gahaṇiyā samannāgato nātisītāya nāccuṇhāya majjhimāya padhānakkhamāya;

    They are rarely ill or unwell. Their stomach digests well, being neither too hot nor too cold, but just right, and fit for meditation.

    असठो होति अमायावी, यथाभूतं अत्तानं आविकत्ता सत्थरि वा विञ्ञूसु वा सब्रह्मचारीसु;

    asaṭho hoti amāyāvī, yathābhūtaṁ attānaṁ āvikattā satthari vā viññūsu vā sabrahmacārīsu;

    They’re not devious or deceitful. They reveal themselves honestly to the Teacher or sensible spiritual companions.

    आरद्धवीरियो विहरति अकुसलानं धम्मानं पहानाय, कुसलानं धम्मानं उपसम्पदाय, थामवा दळ्हपरक्कमो अनिक्खित्तधुरो कुसलेसु धम्मेसु;

    āraddhavīriyo viharati akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya, kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ upasampadāya, thāmavā daḷhaparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu;

    They live with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They’re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities.

    पञ्ञवा होति उदयत्थगामिनिया पञ्ञाय समन्नागतो अरियाय निब्बेधिकाय सम्मा दुक्खक्खयगामिनिया।

    paññavā hoti udayatthagāminiyā paññāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā.

    They’re wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.

    तस्स एवं होति: ‘अहं खोम्हि सद्धो, सद्दहामि तथागतस्स बोधिं: “इतिपि सो भगवा अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो …पे… सत्था देवमनुस्सानं बुद्धो भगवा”ति। कस्माहं आसवानं खयं न पत्थेय्यं। अहं खोम्हि अप्पाबाधो अप्पातङ्को समवेपाकिनिया गहणिया समन्नागतो नातिसीताय नाच्चुण्हाय मज्झिमाय पधानक्खमाय। कस्माहं आसवानं खयं न पत्थेय्यं। अहं खोम्हि असठो अमायावी यथाभूतं अत्तानं आविकत्ता सत्थरि वा विञ्ञूसु वा सब्रह्मचारीसु। कस्माहं आसवानं खयं न पत्थेय्यं। अहं खोम्हि आरद्धवीरियो विहरामि अकुसलानं धम्मानं पहानाय, कुसलानं धम्मानं उपसम्पदाय, थामवा दळ्हपरक्कमो अनिक्खित्तधुरो कुसलेसु धम्मेसु। कस्माहं आसवानं खयं न पत्थेय्यं। अहं खोम्हि पञ्ञवा उदयत्थगामिनिया पञ्ञाय समन्नागतो अरियाय निब्बेधिकाय सम्मा दुक्खक्खयगामिनिया। कस्माहं आसवानं खयं न पत्थेय्यन्ऽति।

    Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘ahaṁ khomhi saddho, saddahāmi tathāgatassa bodhiṁ: “itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā”ti. Kasmāhaṁ āsavānaṁ khayaṁ na pattheyyaṁ. Ahaṁ khomhi appābādho appātaṅko samavepākiniyā gahaṇiyā samannāgato nātisītāya nāccuṇhāya majjhimāya padhānakkhamāya. Kasmāhaṁ āsavānaṁ khayaṁ na pattheyyaṁ. Ahaṁ khomhi asaṭho amāyāvī yathābhūtaṁ attānaṁ āvikattā satthari vā viññūsu vā sabrahmacārīsu. Kasmāhaṁ āsavānaṁ khayaṁ na pattheyyaṁ. Ahaṁ khomhi āraddhavīriyo viharāmi akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya, kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ upasampadāya, thāmavā daḷhaparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu. Kasmāhaṁ āsavānaṁ khayaṁ na pattheyyaṁ. Ahaṁ khomhi paññavā udayatthagāminiyā paññāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā. Kasmāhaṁ āsavānaṁ khayaṁ na pattheyyan’ti.

    They think: ‘I am a person of faith; I have faith in the Realized One’s awakening … Why shouldn’t I aspire to end the defilements? I’m rarely ill or unwell. My stomach digests well, being neither too hot nor too cold, but just right, and fit for meditation. Why shouldn’t I aspire to end the defilements? I’m not devious or deceitful. I reveal myself honestly to the Teacher or sensible spiritual companions. Why shouldn’t I aspire to end the defilements? I live with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. I’m strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities. Why shouldn’t I aspire to end the defilements? I’m wise. I have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering. Why shouldn’t I aspire to end the defilements?’

    इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु आसवानं खयं पत्थेती”ति।

    Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ patthetī”ti.

    A bhikkhu with these five qualities aspires to end the defilements.”
