    अथ खो मोळियसीवको परिब्बाजको येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो मोळियसीवको परिब्बाजको भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Atha kho moḷiyasīvako1 paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho moḷiyasīvako paribbājako bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    And then the wanderer Moḷiyasīvaka went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

    “‘सन्दिट्ठिको धम्मो, सन्दिट्ठिको धम्मोऽति, भन्ते, वुच्चति। कित्तावता नु खो, भन्ते, सन्दिट्ठिको धम्मो होति अकालिको एहिपस्सिको ओपनेय्यिको पच्चत्तं वेदितब्बो विञ्ञूही”ति?

    “‘sandiṭṭhiko dhammo, sandiṭṭhiko dhammo’ti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, sandiṭṭhiko dhammo hoti akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī”ti?

    “Sir, they speak of ‘a teaching apparent in the present life’. In what way is the teaching apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves?”

    “तेन हि, सीवक, तञ्ञेवेत्थ पटिपुच्छामि। यथा ते खमेय्य तथा नं ब्याकरेय्यासि। तं किं मञ्ञसि, सीवक, सन्तं वा अज्झत्तं लोभं ‘अत्थि मे अज्झत्तं लोभोऽति पजानासि, असन्तं वा अज्झत्तं लोभं ‘नत्थि मे अज्झत्तं लोभोऽति पजानासी”ति?

    “Tena hi, sīvaka, taññevettha paṭipucchāmi. Yathā te khameyya tathā naṁ byākareyyāsi. Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, sīvaka, santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ lobhaṁ ‘atthi me ajjhattaṁ lobho’ti pajānāsi, asantaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ lobhaṁ ‘natthi me ajjhattaṁ lobho’ti pajānāsī”ti?

    “Well then, Sīvaka, I’ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like. What do you think, Sīvaka? When there’s greed in you, do you understand ‘I have greed in me’? And when there’s no greed in you, do you understand ‘I have no greed in me’?”

    “एवं, भन्ते”।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”.

    “Yes, sir.”

    “यं खो त्वं, सीवक, सन्तं वा अज्झत्तं लोभं ‘अत्थि मे अज्झत्तं लोभोऽति पजानासि, असन्तं वा अज्झत्तं लोभं ‘नत्थि मे अज्झत्तं लोभोऽति पजानासि—एवम्पि खो, सीवक, सन्दिट्ठिको धम्मो होति …पे…।

    “Yaṁ kho tvaṁ, sīvaka, santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ lobhaṁ ‘atthi me ajjhattaṁ lobho’ti pajānāsi, asantaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ lobhaṁ ‘natthi me ajjhattaṁ lobho’ti pajānāsi—evampi kho, sīvaka, sandiṭṭhiko dhammo hoti …pe….

    “Since you know this, this is how the teaching is apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.

    तं किं मञ्ञसि, सीवक, सन्तं वा अज्झत्तं दोसं …पे… सन्तं वा अज्झत्तं मोहं …पे… सन्तं वा अज्झत्तं लोभधम्मं …पे… सन्तं वा अज्झत्तं दोसधम्मं …पे… सन्तं वा अज्झत्तं मोहधम्मं ‘अत्थि मे अज्झत्तं मोहधम्मोऽति पजानासि, असन्तं वा अज्झत्तं मोहधम्मं ‘नत्थि मे अज्झत्तं मोहधम्मोऽति पजानासी”ति?

    Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, sīvaka, santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ dosaṁ …pe… santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ mohaṁ …pe… santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ lobhadhammaṁ …pe… santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ dosadhammaṁ …pe… santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ mohadhammaṁ ‘atthi me ajjhattaṁ mohadhammo’ti pajānāsi, asantaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ mohadhammaṁ ‘natthi me ajjhattaṁ mohadhammo’ti pajānāsī”ti?

    What do you think, Sīvaka? When there’s hate … delusion … greedy thoughts … hateful thoughts … When there are delusional thoughts in you, do you understand ‘I have delusional thoughts in me’? And when there are no delusional thoughts in you, do you understand ‘I have no delusional thoughts in me’?”

    “एवं, भन्ते”।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”.

    “Yes, sir.”

    “यं खो त्वं, सीवक, सन्तं वा अज्झत्तं मोहधम्मं ‘अत्थि मे अज्झत्तं मोहधम्मोऽति पजानासि, असन्तं वा अज्झत्तं मोहधम्मं ‘नत्थि मे अज्झत्तं मोहधम्मोऽति पजानासि—एवं खो, सीवक, सन्दिट्ठिको धम्मो होति अकालिको एहिपस्सिको ओपनेय्यिको पच्चत्तं वेदितब्बो विञ्ञूही”ति।

    “Yaṁ kho tvaṁ, sīvaka, santaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ mohadhammaṁ ‘atthi me ajjhattaṁ mohadhammo’ti pajānāsi, asantaṁ vā ajjhattaṁ mohadhammaṁ ‘natthi me ajjhattaṁ mohadhammo’ti pajānāsi—evaṁ kho, sīvaka, sandiṭṭhiko dhammo hoti akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī”ti.

    “Since you know this, this is how the teaching is apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.”

    “अभिक्कन्तं, भन्ते, अभिक्कन्तं, भन्ते …पे… उपासकं मं, भन्ते, भगवा धारेतु अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।

    “Abhikkantaṁ, bhante, abhikkantaṁ, bhante …pe… upāsakaṁ maṁ, bhante, bhagavā dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.

    “Excellent, sir! Excellent! From this day forth, may the Buddha remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”

    पञ्चमं।
