Paṭhamasekhasutta
A Trainee (1st)
“पञ्चिमे, भिक्खवे, धम्मा सेखस्स भिक्खुनो परिहानाय संवत्तन्ति। कतमे पञ्च? कम्मारामता, भस्सारामता, निद्दारामता, सङ्गणिकारामता, यथाविमुत्तं चित्तं न पच्चवेक्खति—इमे खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च धम्मा सेखस्स भिक्खुनो परिहानाय संवत्तन्ति।
“Pañcime, bhikkhave, dhammā sekhassa bhikkhuno parihānāya saṁvattanti. Katame pañca? Kammārāmatā, bhassārāmatā, niddārāmatā, saṅgaṇikārāmatā, yathāvimuttaṁ cittaṁ na paccavekkhati—ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca dhammā sekhassa bhikkhuno parihānāya saṁvattanti.
“These five things lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee. What five? They relish work, talk, sleep, and company. And they don’t review the extent of their mind’s freedom. These five things lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee.
पञ्चिमे, भिक्खवे, धम्मा सेखस्स भिक्खुनो अपरिहानाय संवत्तन्ति। कतमे पञ्च? न कम्मारामता, न भस्सारामता, न निद्दारामता, न सङ्गणिकारामता, यथाविमुत्तं चित्तं पच्चवेक्खति—इमे खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च धम्मा सेखस्स भिक्खुनो अपरिहानाय संवत्तन्ती”ति।
Pañcime, bhikkhave, dhammā sekhassa bhikkhuno aparihānāya saṁvattanti. Katame pañca? Na kammārāmatā, na bhassārāmatā, na niddārāmatā, na saṅgaṇikārāmatā, yathāvimuttaṁ cittaṁ paccavekkhati—ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca dhammā sekhassa bhikkhuno aparihānāya saṁvattantī”ti.
These five things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee. What five? They don’t relish work, talk, sleep, and company. And they review the extent of their mind’s freedom. These five things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee.”
