    “दुस्सीलस्स, भिक्खवे, सीलविपन्नस्स हतूपनिसो होति अविप्पटिसारो; अविप्पटिसारे असति अविप्पटिसारविपन्नस्स हतूपनिसं होति पामोज्जं; पामोज्जे असति पामोज्जविपन्नस्स हतूपनिसा होति पीति; पीतिया असति पीतिविपन्नस्स हतूपनिसा होति पस्सद्धि; पस्सद्धिया असति पस्सद्धिविपन्नस्स हतूपनिसं होति सुखं; सुखे असति सुखविपन्नस्स हतूपनिसो होति सम्मासमाधि; सम्मासमाधिम्हि असति सम्मासमाधिविपन्नस्स हतूपनिसं होति यथाभूतञाणदस्सनं; यथाभूतञाणदस्सने असति यथाभूतञाणदस्सनविपन्नस्स हतूपनिसो होति निब्बिदाविरागो; निब्बिदाविरागे असति निब्बिदाविरागविपन्नस्स हतूपनिसं होति विमुत्तिञाणदस्सनं।

    “Dussīlassa, bhikkhave, sīlavipannassa hatūpaniso hoti avippaṭisāro; avippaṭisāre asati avippaṭisāravipannassa hatūpanisaṁ hoti pāmojjaṁ; pāmojje asati pāmojjavipannassa hatūpanisā hoti pīti; pītiyā asati pītivipannassa hatūpanisā hoti passaddhi; passaddhiyā asati passaddhivipannassa hatūpanisaṁ hoti sukhaṁ; sukhe asati sukhavipannassa hatūpaniso hoti sammāsamādhi; sammāsamādhimhi asati sammāsamādhivipannassa hatūpanisaṁ hoti yathābhūtañāṇadassanaṁ; yathābhūtañāṇadassane asati yathābhūtañāṇadassanavipannassa hatūpaniso hoti nibbidāvirāgo; nibbidāvirāge asati nibbidāvirāgavipannassa hatūpanisaṁ hoti vimuttiñāṇadassanaṁ.

    “Bhikkhus, an unethical person, who lacks ethics, has destroyed a vital condition for having no regrets. When there are regrets, one who has regrets has destroyed a vital condition for joy. When there is no joy, one who lacks joy has destroyed a vital condition for rapture. When there is no rapture, one who lacks rapture has destroyed a vital condition for tranquility. When there is no tranquility, one who lacks tranquility has destroyed a vital condition for bliss. When there is no bliss, one who lacks bliss has destroyed a vital condition for right immersion. When there is no right immersion, one who lacks right immersion has destroyed a vital condition for true knowledge and vision. When there is no true knowledge and vision, one who lacks true knowledge and vision has destroyed a vital condition for disillusionment and dispassion. When there is no disillusionment and dispassion, one who lacks disillusionment and dispassion has destroyed a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.

    सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, रुक्खो साखापलासविपन्नो। तस्स पपटिकापि न पारिपूरिं गच्छति, तचोपि … फेग्गुपि … सारोपि न पारिपूरिं गच्छति।

    Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, rukkho sākhāpalāsavipanno. Tassa papaṭikāpi na pāripūriṁ gacchati, tacopi … pheggupi … sāropi na pāripūriṁ gacchati.

    Suppose there was a tree that lacked branches and foliage. Its shoots, bark, softwood, and heartwood would not grow to fullness.

    एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, दुस्सीलस्स सीलविपन्नस्स हतूपनिसो होति अविप्पटिसारो; अविप्पटिसारे असति अविप्पटिसारविपन्नस्स हतूपनिसं होति …पे… विमुत्तिञाणदस्सनं।

    Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, dussīlassa sīlavipannassa hatūpaniso hoti avippaṭisāro; avippaṭisāre asati avippaṭisāravipannassa hatūpanisaṁ hoti …pe… vimuttiñāṇadassanaṁ.

    In the same way, an unethical person, who lacks ethics, has destroyed a vital condition for having no regrets. When there are regrets, one who has regrets has destroyed a vital condition for joy. … One who lacks disillusionment and dispassion has destroyed a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.

    सीलवतो, भिक्खवे, सीलसम्पन्नस्स उपनिससम्पन्नो होति अविप्पटिसारो; अविप्पटिसारे सति अविप्पटिसारसम्पन्नस्स उपनिससम्पन्नं होति पामोज्जं; पामोज्जे सति पामोज्जसम्पन्नस्स उपनिससम्पन्ना होति पीति; पीतिया सति पीतिसम्पन्नस्स उपनिससम्पन्ना होति पस्सद्धि; पस्सद्धिया सति पस्सद्धिसम्पन्नस्स उपनिससम्पन्नं होति सुखं; सुखे सति सुखसम्पन्नस्स उपनिससम्पन्नो होति सम्मासमाधि; सम्मासमाधिम्हि सति सम्मासमाधिसम्पन्नस्स उपनिससम्पन्नं होति यथाभूतञाणदस्सनं; यथाभूतञाणदस्सने सति यथाभूतञाणदस्सनसम्पन्नस्स उपनिससम्पन्नो होति निब्बिदाविरागो; निब्बिदाविरागे सति निब्बिदाविरागसम्पन्नस्स उपनिससम्पन्नं होति विमुत्तिञाणदस्सनं।

    Sīlavato, bhikkhave, sīlasampannassa upanisasampanno hoti avippaṭisāro; avippaṭisāre sati avippaṭisārasampannassa upanisasampannaṁ hoti pāmojjaṁ; pāmojje sati pāmojjasampannassa upanisasampannā hoti pīti; pītiyā sati pītisampannassa upanisasampannā hoti passaddhi; passaddhiyā sati passaddhisampannassa upanisasampannaṁ hoti sukhaṁ; sukhe sati sukhasampannassa upanisasampanno hoti sammāsamādhi; sammāsamādhimhi sati sammāsamādhisampannassa upanisasampannaṁ hoti yathābhūtañāṇadassanaṁ; yathābhūtañāṇadassane sati yathābhūtañāṇadassanasampannassa upanisasampanno hoti nibbidāvirāgo; nibbidāvirāge sati nibbidāvirāgasampannassa upanisasampannaṁ hoti vimuttiñāṇadassanaṁ.

    An ethical person, who has fulfilled ethics, has fulfilled a vital condition for not having regrets. When there are no regrets, one who has no regrets has fulfilled a vital condition for joy. When there is joy, one who has fulfilled joy has fulfilled a vital condition for rapture. When there is rapture, one who has fulfilled rapture has fulfilled a vital condition for tranquility. When there is tranquility, one who has fulfilled tranquility has fulfilled a vital condition for bliss. When there is bliss, one who has fulfilled bliss has fulfilled a vital condition for right immersion. When there is right immersion, one who has fulfilled right immersion has fulfilled a vital condition for true knowledge and vision. When there is true knowledge and vision, one who has fulfilled true knowledge and vision has fulfilled a vital condition for disillusionment and dispassion. When there is disillusionment and dispassion, one who has fulfilled disillusionment and dispassion has fulfilled a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.
