    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे। तत्र खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “भिक्खवो”ति।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “bhikkhavo”ti.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”

    “भदन्ते”ति ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं। भगवा एतदवोच:

    “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca:

    “Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

    “एकमिदाहं, भिक्खवे, समयं उरुवेलायं विहरामि नज्जा नेरञ्जराय तीरे अजपालनिग्रोधे पठमाभिसम्बुद्धो। तस्स मय्हं, भिक्खवे, रहोगतस्स पटिसल्लीनस्स एवं चेतसो परिवितक्को उदपादि: ‘दुक्खं खो अगारवो विहरति अप्पतिस्सो। किं नु खो अहं समणं वा ब्राह्मणं वा सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरेय्यन्ऽति?

    “Ekamidāhaṁ, bhikkhave, samayaṁ uruvelāyaṁ viharāmi najjā nerañjarāya tīre ajapālanigrodhe paṭhamābhisambuddho. Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṁ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: ‘dukkhaṁ kho agāravo viharati appatisso. Kiṁ nu kho ahaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā sakkatvā garuṁ katvā1 upanissāya vihareyyan’ti?

    “Bhikkhus, this one time, when I was first awakened, I was staying near Uruvelā at the goatherd’s banyan tree on the bank of the Nerañjarā River. As I was in private retreat this thought came to mind: ‘One without respect and reverence lives in suffering. What ascetic or brahmin should I honor and respect and rely on?’

    तस्स मय्हं, भिक्खवे, एतदहोसि: ‘अपरिपूरस्स खो अहं सीलक्खन्धस्स पारिपूरिया अञ्ञं समणं वा ब्राह्मणं वा सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरेय्यं। न खो पनाहं पस्सामि सदेवके लोके समारके सब्रह्मके सस्समणब्राह्मणिया पजाय सदेवमनुस्साय अञ्ञं समणं वा ब्राह्मणं वा अत्तना सीलसम्पन्नतरं, यमहं सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरेय्यं।

    Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, etadahosi: ‘aparipūrassa kho ahaṁ sīlakkhandhassa pāripūriyā aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ. Na kho panāhaṁ passāmi sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā attanā sīlasampannataraṁ, yamahaṁ sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ.

    Then it occurred to me: ‘I would honor and respect and rely on another ascetic or brahmin so as to complete the entire spectrum of ethics, if it were incomplete. But I don’t see any other ascetic or brahmin in this world—with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans—who is more accomplished than myself in ethics, who I should honor and respect and rely on.

    अपरिपूरस्स खो अहं समाधिक्खन्धस्स पारिपूरिया अञ्ञं समणं वा ब्राह्मणं वा सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरेय्यं। न खो पनाहं पस्सामि सदेवके लोके समारके सब्रह्मके सस्समणब्राह्मणिया पजाय सदेवमनुस्साय अञ्ञं समणं वा ब्राह्मणं वा अत्तना समाधिसम्पन्नतरं, यमहं सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरेय्यं।

    Aparipūrassa kho ahaṁ samādhikkhandhassa pāripūriyā aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ. Na kho panāhaṁ passāmi sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā attanā samādhisampannataraṁ, yamahaṁ sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ.

    I would honor and respect and rely on another ascetic or brahmin so as to complete the entire spectrum of immersion, if it were incomplete. But I don’t see any other ascetic or brahmin … who is more accomplished than myself in immersion …

    अपरिपूरस्स खो अहं पञ्ञाक्खन्धस्स पारिपूरिया अञ्ञं समणं वा ब्राह्मणं वा सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरेय्यं। न खो पनाहं पस्सामि सदेवके लोके समारके सब्रह्मके सस्समणब्राह्मणिया पजाय सदेवमनुस्साय अञ्ञं समणं वा ब्राह्मणं वा अत्तना पञ्ञासम्पन्नतरं, यमहं सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरेय्यं।

    Aparipūrassa kho ahaṁ paññākkhandhassa pāripūriyā aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ. Na kho panāhaṁ passāmi sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā attanā paññāsampannataraṁ, yamahaṁ sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ.

    I would honor and respect and rely on another ascetic or brahmin so as to complete the entrie spectrum of wisdom, if it were incomplete. But I don’t see any other ascetic or brahmin in this world … who is more accomplished than myself in wisdom …

    अपरिपूरस्स खो अहं विमुत्तिक्खन्धस्स पारिपूरिया अञ्ञं समणं वा ब्राह्मणं वा सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरेय्यं। न खो पनाहं पस्सामि सदेवके लोके समारके सब्रह्मके सस्समणब्राह्मणिया पजाय सदेवमनुस्साय अञ्ञं समणं वा ब्राह्मणं वा अत्तना विमुत्तिसम्पन्नतरं, यमहं सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरेय्यन्ऽति।

    Aparipūrassa kho ahaṁ vimuttikkhandhassa pāripūriyā aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ. Na kho panāhaṁ passāmi sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā attanā vimuttisampannataraṁ, yamahaṁ sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyan’ti.

    I would honor and respect and rely on another ascetic or brahmin so as to complete the entire spectrum of freedom, if it were incomplete. But I don’t see any other ascetic or brahmin in this world … who is more accomplished than myself in freedom …’

    तस्स मय्हं, भिक्खवे, एतदहोसि: ‘यन्नूनाहं य्वायं धम्मो मया अभिसम्बुद्धो तमेव धम्मं सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरेय्यन्ऽति।

    Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, etadahosi: ‘yannūnāhaṁ yvāyaṁ2 dhammo mayā abhisambuddho tameva dhammaṁ sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyan’ti.

    Then it occurred to me: ‘Why don’t I honor and respect and rely on the same teaching to which I was awakened?’

    अथ खो, भिक्खवे, ब्रह्मा सहम्पति मम चेतसा चेतोपरिवितक्कमञ्ञाय—सेय्यथापि नाम बलवा पुरिसो समिञ्जितं वा बाहं पसारेय्य, पसारितं वा बाहं समिञ्जेय्य; एवमेवं—ब्रह्मलोके अन्तरहितो मम पुरतो पातुरहोसि। अथ खो, भिक्खवे, ब्रह्मा सहम्पति एकंसं उत्तरासङ्गं करित्वा दक्खिणं जाणुमण्डलं पथवियं निहन्त्वा येनाहं तेनञ्जलिं पणामेत्वा मं एतदवोच: ‘एवमेतं, भगवा, एवमेतं, सुगत। येपि ते, भन्ते, अहेसुं अतीतमद्धानं अरहन्तो सम्मासम्बुद्धा तेपि भगवन्तो धम्मंयेव सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरिंसु; येपि ते, भन्ते, भविस्सन्ति अनागतमद्धानं अरहन्तो सम्मासम्बुद्धा तेपि भगवन्तो धम्मंयेव सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरिस्सन्ति; भगवापि, भन्ते, एतरहि अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो धम्मंयेव सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहरतूऽति।

    Atha kho, bhikkhave, brahmā sahampati mama cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya—seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṁ3 vā bāhaṁ pasāreyya, pasāritaṁ vā bāhaṁ samiñjeyya; evamevaṁ—brahmaloke antarahito mama purato pāturahosi. Atha kho, bhikkhave, brahmā sahampati ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā dakkhiṇaṁ jāṇumaṇḍalaṁ pathaviyaṁ nihantvā yenāhaṁ tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā maṁ etadavoca: ‘evametaṁ, bhagavā, evametaṁ, sugata. Yepi te, bhante, ahesuṁ atītamaddhānaṁ arahanto sammāsambuddhā tepi bhagavanto dhammaṁyeva sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihariṁsu; yepi te, bhante, bhavissanti anāgatamaddhānaṁ arahanto sammāsambuddhā tepi bhagavanto dhammaṁyeva sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya viharissanti; bhagavāpi, bhante, etarahi arahaṁ sammāsambuddho dhammaṁyeva sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya viharatū’ti.

    And then Brahmā Sahampati, knowing what I was thinking, vanished from the Brahmā realm and appeared in front of me, as easily as a strong man would extend or contract his arm. He arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward me, and said: ‘That’s so true, Blessed One! That’s so true, Holy One! All the perfected ones, the fully awakened Buddhas who lived in the past honored and respected and relied on this same teaching. All the perfected ones, the fully awakened Buddhas who will live in the future will honor and respect and rely on this same teaching. May the Blessed One, who is the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha at present, also honor and respect and rely on this same teaching.’

    इदमवोच ब्रह्मा सहम्पति। इदं वत्वा अथापरं एतदवोच:

    Idamavoca brahmā sahampati. Idaṁ vatvā athāparaṁ etadavoca:

    That’s what Brahmā Sahampati said. Then he went on to say:

    ‘ये च अतीता सम्बुद्धा, ये च बुद्धा अनागता; यो चेतरहि सम्बुद्धो, बहूनं सोकनासनो।

    ‘Ye ca atītā4 sambuddhā, ye ca buddhā anāgatā; Yo cetarahi sambuddho, bahūnaṁ5 sokanāsano.

    ‘All Buddhas, whether in the past, the Buddhas of the future, and the Buddha at present—destroyer of the sorrows of many—

    सब्बे सद्धम्मगरुनो, विहंसु विहरन्ति च; अथोपि विहरिस्सन्ति, एसा बुद्धान धम्मता।

    Sabbe saddhammagaruno, vihaṁsu6 viharanti ca; Athopi viharissanti, esā buddhāna dhammatā.

    respecting the true teaching they did live, they do live, and they also will live. This is the nature of the Buddhas.

    तस्मा हि अत्तकामेन, महत्तमभिकङ्खता; सद्धम्मो गरुकातब्बो, सरं बुद्धान सासनन्ऽति।

    Tasmā hi attakāmena, mahattamabhikaṅkhatā; Saddhammo garukātabbo, saraṁ buddhāna sāsanan’ti.

    Therefore someone who cares for their own welfare, and wants to become the very best they can be, should respect the true teaching, remembering the instructions of the Buddhas.’

    इदमवोच, भिक्खवे, ब्रह्मा सहम्पति। इदं वत्वा मं अभिवादेत्वा पदक्खिणं कत्वा तत्थेवन्तरधायि। अथ ख्वाहं, भिक्खवे, ब्रह्मुनो च अज्झेसनं विदित्वा अत्तनो च पतिरूपं य्वायं धम्मो मया अभिसम्बुद्धो तमेव धम्मं सक्कत्वा गरुं कत्वा उपनिस्साय विहासिं। यतो च खो, भिक्खवे, सङ्घोपि महत्तेन समन्नागतो, अथ मे सङ्घेपि गारवो”ति।

    Idamavoca, bhikkhave, brahmā sahampati. Idaṁ vatvā maṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyi. Atha khvāhaṁ, bhikkhave, brahmuno ca ajjhesanaṁ viditvā attano ca patirūpaṁ yvāyaṁ7 dhammo mayā abhisambuddho tameva dhammaṁ sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihāsiṁ. Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, saṅghopi mahattena samannāgato, atha me saṅghepi gāravo”ti.

    That’s what Brahmā Sahampati said. Then he bowed and respectfully circled me, keeping me on his right side, before vanishing right there. Then, knowing the request of Brahmā and what was suitable for myself, I honored and respected and relied on the same teaching to which I was awakened. And since the Saṅgha has also achieved greatness, I also respect the Saṅgha.”

    पठमं।
