    Piyajātikasutta

    Born From the Beloved

    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

    तेन खो पन समयेन अञ्ञतरस्स गहपतिस्स एकपुत्तको पियो मनापो कालङ्कतो होति। तस्स कालङ्किरियाय नेव कम्मन्ता पटिभन्ति न भत्तं पटिभाति। सो आळाहनं गन्त्वा कन्दति: “कहं, एकपुत्तक, कहं, एकपुत्तका”ति।

    Tena kho pana samayena aññatarassa gahapatissa ekaputtako piyo manāpo kālaṅkato hoti. Tassa kālaṅkiriyāya neva kammantā paṭibhanti na bhattaṁ paṭibhāti. So āḷāhanaṁ gantvā kandati: “kahaṁ, ekaputtaka, kahaṁ, ekaputtakā”ti.

    Now at that time a certain householder’s dear and beloved only child passed away. After their death he didn’t feel like working or eating. He would go to the cemetery and wail, “Where are you, my only child? Where are you, my only child?”

    अथ खो सो गहपति येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो तं गहपतिं भगवा एतदवोच: “न खो ते, गहपति, सके चित्ते ठितस्स इन्द्रियानि, अत्थि ते इन्द्रियानं अञ्ञथत्तन्”ति।

    Atha kho so gahapati yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho taṁ gahapatiṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “na kho te, gahapati, sake citte ṭhitassa indriyāni, atthi te indriyānaṁ aññathattan”ti.

    Then he went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him, “Householder, you look like someone who’s not in their right mind; your faculties have deteriorated.”

    “किञ्हि मे, भन्ते, इन्द्रियानं नाञ्ञथत्तं भविस्सति; मय्हञ्हि, भन्ते, एकपुत्तो पियो मनापो कालङ्कतो। तस्स कालङ्किरियाय नेव कम्मन्ता पटिभन्ति, न भत्तं पटिभाति। सोहं आळाहनं गन्त्वा कन्दामि: ‘कहं, एकपुत्तक, कहं, एकपुत्तकाऽ”ति।

    “Kiñhi me, bhante, indriyānaṁ nāññathattaṁ bhavissati; mayhañhi, bhante, ekaputto piyo manāpo kālaṅkato. Tassa kālaṅkiriyāya neva kammantā paṭibhanti, na bhattaṁ paṭibhāti. Sohaṁ āḷāhanaṁ gantvā kandāmi: ‘kahaṁ, ekaputtaka, kahaṁ, ekaputtakā’”ti.

    “And how, sir, could my faculties not have deteriorated? For my dear and beloved only child has passed away. Since their death I haven’t felt like working or eating. I go to the cemetery and wail: ‘Where are you, my only child? Where are you, my only child?’”

    “एवमेतं, गहपति, एवमेतं, गहपति। पियजातिका हि, गहपति, सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविका”ति।

    “Evametaṁ, gahapati, evametaṁ, gahapati. Piyajātikā hi, gahapati, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikā”ti.

    “That’s so true, householder! That’s so true, householder! For our loved ones are a source of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.”

    “कस्स खो नामेतं, भन्ते, एवं भविस्सति: ‘पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाऽति? पियजातिका हि खो, भन्ते, आनन्दसोमनस्सा पियप्पभविका”ति। अथ खो सो गहपति भगवतो भासितं अनभिनन्दित्वा पटिक्कोसित्वा उट्ठायासना पक्कामि।

    “Kassa kho1 nāmetaṁ, bhante, evaṁ bhavissati: ‘piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikā’ti? Piyajātikā hi kho, bhante, ānandasomanassā piyappabhavikā”ti. Atha kho so gahapati bhagavato bhāsitaṁ anabhinanditvā paṭikkositvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmi.

    “Sir, who on earth could ever think such a thing! For our loved ones are a source of joy and happiness.” Disagreeing with the Buddha’s statement, rejecting it, he got up from his seat and left.

    तेन खो पन समयेन सम्बहुला अक्खधुत्ता भगवतो अविदूरे अक्खेहि दिब्बन्ति। अथ खो सो गहपति येन ते अक्खधुत्ता तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा अक्खधुत्ते एतदवोच: “इधाहं, भोन्तो, येन समणो गोतमो तेनुपसङ्कमिं; उपसङ्कमित्वा समणं गोतमं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदिं। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो मं, भोन्तो, समणो गोतमो एतदवोच: ‘न खो ते, गहपति, सके चित्ते ठितस्स इन्द्रियानि, अत्थि ते इन्द्रियानं अञ्ञथत्तन्ऽति। एवं वुत्ते, अहं, भोन्तो, समणं गोतमं एतदवोचं: ‘किञ्हि मे, भन्ते, इन्द्रियानं नाञ्ञथत्तं भविस्सति; मय्हञ्हि, भन्ते, एकपुत्तको पियो मनापो कालङ्कतो। तस्स कालङ्किरियाय नेव कम्मन्ता पटिभन्ति, न भत्तं पटिभाति। सोहं आळाहनं गन्त्वा कन्दामि—कहं, एकपुत्तक, कहं, एकपुत्तकाऽति। ‘एवमेतं, गहपति, एवमेतं, गहपति। पियजातिका हि, गहपति, सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाऽति। ‘कस्स खो नामेतं, भन्ते, एवं भविस्सति—पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविका? पियजातिका हि खो, भन्ते, आनन्दसोमनस्सा पियप्पभविकाऽति। अथ ख्वाहं, भोन्तो, समणस्स गोतमस्स भासितं अनभिनन्दित्वा पटिक्कोसित्वा उट्ठायासना पक्कमिन्”ति।

    Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā akkhadhuttā bhagavato avidūre akkhehi dibbanti. Atha kho so gahapati yena te akkhadhuttā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā akkhadhutte etadavoca: “idhāhaṁ, bhonto, yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkamiṁ; upasaṅkamitvā samaṇaṁ gotamaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁ. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho maṁ, bhonto, samaṇo gotamo etadavoca: ‘na kho te, gahapati, sake citte ṭhitassa indriyāni, atthi te indriyānaṁ aññathattan’ti. Evaṁ vutte, ahaṁ, bhonto, samaṇaṁ gotamaṁ etadavocaṁ: ‘kiñhi me, bhante, indriyānaṁ nāññathattaṁ bhavissati; mayhañhi, bhante, ekaputtako piyo manāpo kālaṅkato. Tassa kālaṅkiriyāya neva kammantā paṭibhanti, na bhattaṁ paṭibhāti. Sohaṁ āḷāhanaṁ gantvā kandāmi—kahaṁ, ekaputtaka, kahaṁ, ekaputtakā’ti. ‘Evametaṁ, gahapati, evametaṁ, gahapati. Piyajātikā hi, gahapati, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikā’ti. ‘Kassa kho nāmetaṁ, bhante, evaṁ bhavissati—piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikā? Piyajātikā hi kho, bhante, ānandasomanassā piyappabhavikā’ti. Atha khvāhaṁ, bhonto, samaṇassa gotamassa bhāsitaṁ anabhinanditvā paṭikkositvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkamin”ti.

    Now at that time several gamblers were playing dice not far from the Buddha. That householder approached them and told them what had happened.

    “एवमेतं, गहपति, एवमेतं, गहपति। पियजातिका हि, गहपति, आनन्दसोमनस्सा पियप्पभविका”ति।

    “Evametaṁ, gahapati, evametaṁ, gahapati. Piyajātikā hi, gahapati, ānandasomanassā piyappabhavikā”ti.

    “That’s so true, householder! That’s so true, householder! For our loved ones are a source of joy and happiness.”

    अथ खो सो गहपति “समेति मे अक्खधुत्तेही”ति पक्कामि।

    Atha kho so gahapati “sameti me akkhadhuttehī”ti pakkāmi.

    Thinking, “The gamblers and I are in agreement,” the householder left.

    अथ खो इदं कथावत्थु अनुपुब्बेन राजन्तेपुरं पाविसि। अथ खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो मल्लिकं देविं आमन्तेसि: “इदं ते, मल्लिके, समणेन गोतमेन भासितं: ‘पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाऽ”ति।

    Atha kho idaṁ kathāvatthu anupubbena rājantepuraṁ pāvisi. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo mallikaṁ deviṁ āmantesi: “idaṁ te, mallike, samaṇena gotamena bhāsitaṁ: ‘piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikā’”ti.

    Eventually that topic of discussion reached the royal compound. Then King Pasenadi addressed Queen Mallikā, “Mallika, your ascetic Gotama said this: ‘Our loved ones are a source of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.’”

    “सचेतं, महाराज, भगवता भासितं, एवमेतन्”ति।

    “Sacetaṁ, mahārāja, bhagavatā bhāsitaṁ, evametan”ti.

    “If that’s what the Buddha said, great king, then that’s how it is.”

    “एवमेव पनायं मल्लिका यञ्ञदेव समणो गोतमो भासति तं तदेवस्स अब्भनुमोदति: ‘सचेतं, महाराज, भगवता भासितं एवमेतन्ऽति। सेय्यथापि नाम, यञ्ञदेव आचरियो अन्तेवासिस्स भासति तं तदेवस्स अन्तेवासी अब्भनुमोदति: ‘एवमेतं, आचरिय, एवमेतं, आचरियाऽति। एवमेव खो त्वं, मल्लिके, यञ्ञदेव समणो गोतमो भासति तं तदेवस्स अब्भनुमोदसि: ‘सचेतं, महाराज, भगवता भासितं एवमेतन्ऽति। चर पिरे, मल्लिके, विनस्सा”ति।

    “Evameva panāyaṁ mallikā yaññadeva samaṇo gotamo bhāsati taṁ tadevassa abbhanumodati: ‘Sacetaṁ, mahārāja, bhagavatā bhāsitaṁ evametan’ti. Seyyathāpi nāma, yaññadeva ācariyo antevāsissa bhāsati taṁ tadevassa antevāsī abbhanumodati: ‘evametaṁ, ācariya, evametaṁ, ācariyā’ti. Evameva kho tvaṁ, mallike, yaññadeva samaṇo gotamo bhāsati taṁ tadevassa abbhanumodasi: ‘Sacetaṁ, mahārāja, bhagavatā bhāsitaṁ evametan’ti. Cara pire, mallike, vinassā”ti.

    “No matter what the ascetic Gotama says, Mallikā agrees with him: ‘If that’s what the Buddha said, great king, then that’s how it is.’ You’re just like a student who agrees with everything their teacher says. Go away, Mallikā, get out of here!”

    अथ खो मल्लिका देवी नाळिजङ्घं ब्राह्मणं आमन्तेसि: “एहि त्वं, ब्राह्मण, येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कम; उपसङ्कमित्वा मम वचनेन भगवतो पादे सिरसा वन्दाहि, अप्पाबाधं अप्पातङ्कं लहुट्ठानं बलं फासुविहारं पुच्छ: ‘मल्लिका, भन्ते, देवी भगवतो पादे सिरसा वन्दति, अप्पाबाधं अप्पातङ्कं लहुट्ठानं बलं फासुविहारं पुच्छतीऽति; एवञ्च वदेहि: ‘भासिता नु खो, भन्ते, भगवता एसा वाचा—पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाऽति। यथा ते भगवा ब्याकरोति तं साधुकं उग्गहेत्वा मम आरोचेय्यासि। न हि तथागता वितथं भणन्ती”ति।

    Atha kho mallikā devī nāḷijaṅghaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ āmantesi: “ehi tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa, yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkama; upasaṅkamitvā mama vacanena bhagavato pāde sirasā vandāhi, appābādhaṁ appātaṅkaṁ lahuṭṭhānaṁ balaṁ phāsuvihāraṁ puccha: ‘mallikā, bhante, devī bhagavato pāde sirasā vandati, appābādhaṁ appātaṅkaṁ lahuṭṭhānaṁ balaṁ phāsuvihāraṁ pucchatī’ti; evañca vadehi: ‘bhāsitā nu kho, bhante, bhagavatā esā vācā—piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikā’ti. Yathā te bhagavā byākaroti taṁ sādhukaṁ uggahetvā mama āroceyyāsi. Na hi tathāgatā vitathaṁ bhaṇantī”ti.

    Then Queen Mallikā addressed the brahmin Nāḷijaṅgha, “Please, brahmin, go to the Buddha, and in my name bow with your head to his feet. Ask him if he is healthy and well, nimble, strong, and living comfortably. And then say: ‘Sir, did the Buddha make this statement: “Our loved ones are a source of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress”?’ Remember well how the Buddha answers and tell it to me. For Realized Ones say nothing that is not so.”

    “एवं, भोती”ति खो नाळिजङ्घो ब्राह्मणो मल्लिकाय देविया पटिस्सुत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो नाळिजङ्घो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “मल्लिका, भो गोतम, देवी भोतो गोतमस्स पादे सिरसा वन्दति; अप्पाबाधं अप्पातङ्कं लहुट्ठानं बलं फासुविहारं पुच्छति; एवञ्च वदेति: ‘भासिता नु खो, भन्ते, भगवता एसा वाचा—पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाऽ”ति।

    “Evaṁ, bhotī”ti kho nāḷijaṅgho brāhmaṇo mallikāya deviyā paṭissutvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho nāḷijaṅgho brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “mallikā, bho gotama, devī bhoto gotamassa pāde sirasā vandati; appābādhaṁ appātaṅkaṁ lahuṭṭhānaṁ balaṁ phāsuvihāraṁ pucchati; evañca vadeti: ‘bhāsitā nu kho, bhante, bhagavatā esā vācā—piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikā’”ti.

    “Yes, ma’am,” he replied. He went to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha, “Master Gotama, Queen Mallikā bows with her head to your feet. She asks if you are healthy and well, nimble, strong, and living comfortably. And she asks whether the Buddha made this statement: ‘Our loved ones are a source of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.’”

    “एवमेतं, ब्राह्मण, एवमेतं, ब्राह्मण। पियजातिका हि, ब्राह्मण, सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाति।

    “Evametaṁ, brāhmaṇa, evametaṁ, brāhmaṇa. Piyajātikā hi, brāhmaṇa, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikāti.

    “That’s right, brahmin, that’s right! For our loved ones are a source of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

    तदमिनापेतं, ब्राह्मण, परियायेन वेदितब्बं यथा पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविका। भूतपुब्बं, ब्राह्मण, इमिस्सायेव सावत्थिया अञ्ञतरिस्सा इत्थिया माता कालमकासि। सा तस्सा कालकिरियाय उम्मत्तिका खित्तचित्ता रथिकाय रथिकं सिङ्घाटकेन सिङ्घाटकं उपसङ्कमित्वा एवमाह: ‘अपि मे मातरं अद्दस्सथ, अपि मे मातरं अद्दस्सथाऽति?

    Tadamināpetaṁ, brāhmaṇa, pariyāyena veditabbaṁ yathā piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikā. Bhūtapubbaṁ, brāhmaṇa, imissāyeva sāvatthiyā aññatarissā itthiyā mātā kālamakāsi. Sā tassā kālakiriyāya ummattikā khittacittā rathikāya rathikaṁ2 siṅghāṭakena siṅghāṭakaṁ upasaṅkamitvā evamāha: ‘api me mātaraṁ addassatha, api me mātaraṁ addassathā’ti?

    And here’s a way to understand how our loved ones are a source of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. Once upon a time right here in Sāvatthī a certain woman’s mother passed away. And because of that she went mad and lost her mind. She went from street to street and from square to square saying, ‘Has anyone seen my mother? Has anyone seen my mother?’

    इमिनापि खो एतं, ब्राह्मण, परियायेन वेदितब्बं यथा पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाति।

    Imināpi kho etaṁ, brāhmaṇa, pariyāyena veditabbaṁ yathā piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikāti.

    And here’s another way to understand how our loved ones are a source of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

    भूतपुब्बं, ब्राह्मण, इमिस्सायेव सावत्थिया अञ्ञतरिस्सा इत्थिया पिता कालमकासि … भाता कालमकासि … भगिनी कालमकासि … पुत्तो कालमकासि … धीता कालमकासि … सामिको कालमकासि। सा तस्स कालकिरियाय उम्मत्तिका खित्तचित्ता रथिकाय रथिकं सिङ्घाटकेन सिङ्घाटकं उपसङ्कमित्वा एवमाह: ‘अपि मे सामिकं अद्दस्सथ, अपि मे सामिकं अद्दस्सथाऽति?

    Bhūtapubbaṁ, brāhmaṇa, imissāyeva sāvatthiyā aññatarissā itthiyā pitā kālamakāsi … bhātā kālamakāsi … bhaginī kālamakāsi … putto kālamakāsi … dhītā kālamakāsi … sāmiko kālamakāsi. Sā tassa kālakiriyāya ummattikā khittacittā rathikāya rathikaṁ siṅghāṭakena siṅghāṭakaṁ upasaṅkamitvā evamāha: ‘api me sāmikaṁ addassatha, api me sāmikaṁ addassathā’ti?

    Once upon a time right here in Sāvatthī a certain woman’s father … brother … sister … son … daughter … husband passed away. And because of that she went mad and lost her mind. She went from street to street and from square to square saying, ‘Has anyone seen my husband? Has anyone seen my husband?’

    इमिनापि खो एतं, ब्राह्मण, परियायेन वेदितब्बं यथा पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाति।

    Imināpi kho etaṁ, brāhmaṇa, pariyāyena veditabbaṁ yathā piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikāti.

    And here’s another way to understand how our loved ones are a source of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

    भूतपुब्बं, ब्राह्मण, इमिस्सायेव सावत्थिया अञ्ञतरस्स पुरिसस्स माता कालमकासि। सो तस्सा कालकिरियाय उम्मत्तको खित्तचित्तो रथिकाय रथिकं सिङ्घाटकेन सिङ्घाटकं उपसङ्कमित्वा एवमाह: ‘अपि मे मातरं अद्दस्सथ, अपि मे मातरं अद्दस्सथाऽति? इमिनापि खो एतं, ब्राह्मण, परियायेन वेदितब्बं यथा पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाति। भूतपुब्बं, ब्राह्मण, इमिस्सायेव सावत्थिया अञ्ञतरस्स पुरिसस्स पिता कालमकासि … भाता कालमकासि … भगिनी कालमकासि … पुत्तो कालमकासि … धीता कालमकासि … पजापति कालमकासि। सो तस्सा कालकिरियाय उम्मत्तको खित्तचित्तो रथिकाय रथिकं सिङ्घाटकेन सिङ्घाटकं उपसङ्कमित्वा एवमाह: ‘अपि मे पजापतिं अद्दस्सथ, अपि मे पजापतिं अद्दस्सथाऽति?

    Bhūtapubbaṁ, brāhmaṇa, imissāyeva sāvatthiyā aññatarassa purisassa mātā kālamakāsi. So tassā kālakiriyāya ummattako khittacitto rathikāya rathikaṁ siṅghāṭakena siṅghāṭakaṁ upasaṅkamitvā evamāha: ‘api me mātaraṁ addassatha, api me mātaraṁ addassathā’ti? Imināpi kho etaṁ, brāhmaṇa, pariyāyena veditabbaṁ yathā piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikāti. Bhūtapubbaṁ, brāhmaṇa, imissāyeva sāvatthiyā aññatarassa purisassa pitā kālamakāsi … bhātā kālamakāsi … bhaginī kālamakāsi … putto kālamakāsi … dhītā kālamakāsi … pajāpati kālamakāsi. So tassā kālakiriyāya ummattako khittacitto rathikāya rathikaṁ siṅghāṭakena siṅghāṭakaṁ upasaṅkamitvā evamāha: ‘api me pajāpatiṁ addassatha, api me pajāpatiṁ addassathā’ti?

    Once upon a time right here in Sāvatthī a certain man’s mother … father … brother … sister … son … daughter … wife passed away. And because of that he went mad and lost his mind. He went from street to street and from square to square saying, ‘Has anyone seen my wife? Has anyone seen my wife?’

    इमिनापि खो एतं, ब्राह्मण, परियायेन वेदितब्बं यथा पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाति।

    Imināpi kho etaṁ, brāhmaṇa, pariyāyena veditabbaṁ yathā piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikāti.

    And here’s another way to understand how our loved ones are a source of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

    भूतपुब्बं, ब्राह्मण, इमिस्सायेव सावत्थिया अञ्ञतरा इत्थी ञातिकुलं अगमासि। तस्सा ते ञातका सामिकं अच्छिन्दित्वा अञ्ञस्स दातुकामा। सा च तं न इच्छति। अथ खो सा इत्थी सामिकं एतदवोच: ‘इमे, मं, अय्यपुत्त, ञातका त्वं अच्छिन्दित्वा अञ्ञस्स दातुकामा। अहञ्च तं न इच्छामीऽति। अथ खो सो पुरिसो तं इत्थिं द्विधा छेत्वा अत्तानं उप्फालेसि: ‘उभो पेच्च भविस्सामाऽति। इमिनापि खो एतं, ब्राह्मण, परियायेन वेदितब्बं यथा पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविका”ति।

    Bhūtapubbaṁ, brāhmaṇa, imissāyeva sāvatthiyā aññatarā itthī ñātikulaṁ agamāsi. Tassā te ñātakā sāmikaṁ3 acchinditvā aññassa dātukāmā. Sā ca taṁ na icchati. Atha kho sā itthī sāmikaṁ etadavoca: ‘ime, maṁ, ayyaputta, ñātakā tvaṁ4 acchinditvā aññassa dātukāmā. Ahañca taṁ na icchāmī’ti. Atha kho so puriso taṁ itthiṁ dvidhā chetvā attānaṁ upphālesi: ‘ubho pecca bhavissāmā’ti. Imināpi kho etaṁ, brāhmaṇa, pariyāyena veditabbaṁ yathā piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikā”ti.

    Once upon a time right here in Sāvatthī a certain woman went to live with her relative’s family. But her relatives wanted to divorce her from her husband and give her to another, who she didn’t want. So she told her husband about this. But he cut her in two and disemboweled himself, thinking, ‘We shall be together after death.’ That’s another way to understand how our loved ones are a source of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.”

    अथ खो नाळिजङ्घो ब्राह्मणो भगवतो भासितं अभिनन्दित्वा अनुमोदित्वा उट्ठायासना येन मल्लिका देवी तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा यावतको अहोसि भगवता सद्धिं कथासल्लापो तं सब्बं मल्लिकाय देविया आरोचेसि। अथ खो मल्लिका देवी येन राजा पसेनदि कोसलो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा राजानं पसेनदिं कोसलं एतदवोच: “तं किं मञ्ञसि, महाराज, पिया ते वजिरी कुमारी”ति?

    Atha kho nāḷijaṅgho brāhmaṇo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinanditvā anumoditvā uṭṭhāyāsanā yena mallikā devī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā yāvatako ahosi bhagavatā saddhiṁ kathāsallāpo taṁ sabbaṁ mallikāya deviyā ārocesi. Atha kho mallikā devī yena rājā pasenadi kosalo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ etadavoca: “Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, mahārāja, piyā te vajirī kumārī”ti?

    Then Nāḷijaṅgha the brahmin, having approved and agreed with what the Buddha said, got up from his seat, went to Queen Mallikā, and told her of all they had discussed. Then Queen Mallikā approached King Pasenadi and said to him, “What do you think, great king? Do you love Princess Vajirī?”

    “एवं, मल्लिके, पिया मे वजिरी कुमारी”ति।

    “Evaṁ, mallike, piyā me vajirī kumārī”ti.

    “Indeed I do, Mallikā.”

    “तं किं मञ्ञसि, महाराज, वजिरिया ते कुमारिया विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा उप्पज्जेय्युं सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति?

    “Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, mahārāja, vajiriyā te kumāriyā vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjeyyuṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti?

    “What do you think, great king? If she were to decay and perish, would sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress arise in you?”

    “वजिरिया मे, मल्लिके, कुमारिया विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा जीवितस्सपि सिया अञ्ञथत्तं, किं पन मे न उप्पज्जिस्सन्ति सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति?

    “Vajiriyā me, mallike, kumāriyā vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā jīvitassapi siyā aññathattaṁ, kiṁ pana me na uppajjissanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti?

    “If she were to decay and perish, my life would fall apart. How could sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress not arise in me?”

    “इदं खो तं, महाराज, तेन भगवता जानता पस्सता अरहता सम्मासम्बुद्धेन सन्धाय भासितं: ‘पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाऽति।

    “Idaṁ kho taṁ, mahārāja, tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena sandhāya bhāsitaṁ: ‘piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikā’ti.

    “This is what the Buddha was referring to when he said: ‘Our loved ones are a source of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.’

    तं किं मञ्ञसि, महाराज, पिया ते वासभा खत्तिया”ति? “एवं, मल्लिके, पिया मे वासभा खत्तिया”ति। “तं किं मञ्ञसि, महाराज, वासभाय ते खत्तियाय विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा उप्पज्जेय्युं सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति? “वासभाय मे, मल्लिके, खत्तियाय विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा जीवितस्सपि सिया अञ्ञथत्तं, किं पन मे न उप्पज्जिस्सन्ति सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति? “इदं खो तं, महाराज, तेन भगवता जानता पस्सता अरहता सम्मासम्बुद्धेन सन्धाय भासितं: ‘पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाऽति।

    Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, mahārāja, piyā te vāsabhā khattiyā”ti? “Evaṁ, mallike, piyā me vāsabhā khattiyā”ti. “Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, mahārāja, vāsabhāya te khattiyāya vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjeyyuṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti? “Vāsabhāya me, mallike, khattiyāya vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā jīvitassapi siyā aññathattaṁ, kiṁ pana me na uppajjissanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti? “Idaṁ kho taṁ, mahārāja, tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena sandhāya bhāsitaṁ: ‘piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikā’ti.

    What do you think, great king? Do you love Lady Vāsabhā? …

    तं किं मञ्ञसि, महाराज, पियो ते विटटूभो सेनापती”ति? “एवं, मल्लिके, पियो मे विटटूभो सेनापती”ति। “तं किं मञ्ञसि, महाराज, विटटूभस्स ते सेनापतिस्स विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा उप्पज्जेय्युं सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति? “विटटूभस्स मे, मल्लिके, सेनापतिस्स विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा जीवितस्सपि सिया अञ्ञथत्तं, किं पन मे न उप्पज्जिस्सन्ति सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति? “इदं खो तं, महाराज, तेन भगवता जानता पस्सता अरहता सम्मासम्बुद्धेन सन्धाय भासितं: ‘पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाऽति।

    Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, mahārāja, piyo te viṭaṭūbho5 senāpatī”ti? “Evaṁ, mallike, piyo me viṭaṭūbho senāpatī”ti. “Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, mahārāja, viṭaṭūbhassa te senāpatissa vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjeyyuṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti? “Viṭaṭūbhassa me, mallike, senāpatissa vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā jīvitassapi siyā aññathattaṁ, kiṁ pana me na uppajjissanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti? “Idaṁ kho taṁ, mahārāja, tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena sandhāya bhāsitaṁ: ‘piyajātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā piyappabhavikā’ti.

    Do you love your son, General Viḍūḍabha? …

    तं किं मञ्ञसि, महाराज, पिया ते अहन्”ति?

    Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, mahārāja, piyā te ahan”ti?

    Do you love me?”

    “एवं, मल्लिके, पिया मेसि त्वन्”ति।

    “Evaṁ, mallike, piyā mesi tvan”ti.

    “Indeed I do love you, Mallikā.”

    “तं किं मञ्ञसि, महाराज, मय्हं ते विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा उप्पज्जेय्युं सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति?

    “Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, mahārāja, mayhaṁ te vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjeyyuṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti?

    “What do you think, great king? If I were to decay and perish, would sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress arise in you?”

    “तुय्हञ्हि मे, मल्लिके, विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा जीवितस्सपि सिया अञ्ञथत्तं, किं पन मे न उप्पज्जिस्सन्ति सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति?

    “Tuyhañhi me, mallike, vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā jīvitassapi siyā aññathattaṁ, kiṁ pana me na uppajjissanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti?

    “If you were to decay and perish, my life would fall apart. How could sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress not arise in me?”

    “इदं खो तं, महाराज, तेन भगवता जानता पस्सता अरहता सम्मासम्बुद्धेन सन्धाय भासितं: ‘पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाऽति।

    तं किं मञ्ञसि, महाराज, पिया ते कासिकोसला”ति?

    Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, mahārāja, piyā te kāsikosalā”ti?

    What do you think, great king? Do you love the realms of Kāsi and Kosala?”

    “एवं, मल्लिके, पिया मे कासिकोसला। कासिकोसलानं, मल्लिके, आनुभावेन कासिकचन्दनं पच्चनुभोम, मालागन्धविलेपनं धारेमा”ति।

    “Evaṁ, mallike, piyā me kāsikosalā. Kāsikosalānaṁ, mallike, ānubhāvena kāsikacandanaṁ paccanubhoma, mālāgandhavilepanaṁ dhāremā”ti.

    “Indeed I do, Mallikā. It’s due to the bounty of Kāsi and Kosala that we use sandalwood imported from Kāsi and wear garlands, perfumes, and makeup.”

    “तं किं मञ्ञसि, महाराज, कासिकोसलानं ते विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा उप्पज्जेय्युं सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति?

    “Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, mahārāja, kāsikosalānaṁ te vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā uppajjeyyuṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti?

    “What do you think, great king? If these realms were to decay and perish, would sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress arise in you?”

    “कासिकोसलानञ्हि, मल्लिके, विपरिणामञ्ञथाभावा जीवितस्सपि सिया अञ्ञथत्तं, किं पन मे न उप्पज्जिस्सन्ति सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा”ति?

    “Kāsikosalānañhi, mallike, vipariṇāmaññathābhāvā jīvitassapi siyā aññathattaṁ, kiṁ pana me na uppajjissanti sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā”ti?

    “If they were to decay and perish, my life would fall apart. How could sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress not arise in me?”

    “इदं खो तं, महाराज, तेन भगवता जानता पस्सता अरहता सम्मासम्बुद्धेन सन्धाय भासितं: ‘पियजातिका सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासा पियप्पभविकाऽ”ति।

    “अच्छरियं, मल्लिके, अब्भुतं, मल्लिके। यावञ्च सो भगवा पञ्ञाय अतिविज्झ मञ्ञे पस्सति। एहि, मल्लिके, आचमेही”ति।

    “Acchariyaṁ, mallike, abbhutaṁ, mallike. Yāvañca so bhagavā paññāya ativijjha maññe6 passati. Ehi, mallike, ācamehī”ti.

    “It’s incredible, Mallikā, it’s amazing, how far the Buddha sees with penetrating wisdom, it seems to me. Come, Mallikā, rinse my hands.”

    अथ खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो उट्ठायासना एकंसं उत्तरासङ्गं करित्वा येन भगवा तेनञ्जलिं पणामेत्वा तिक्खत्तुं उदानं उदानेसि:

    Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

    Then King Pasenadi got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and expressed this heartfelt sentiment three times:

    “नमो तस्स भगवतो अरहतो सम्मासम्बुद्धस्स।

    “Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa.

    “Homage to that Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha!

    नमो तस्स भगवतो अरहतो सम्मासम्बुद्धस्स।

    Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa.

    Homage to that Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha!

    नमो तस्स भगवतो अरहतो सम्मासम्बुद्धस्सा”ति।

    Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassā”ti.

    Homage to that Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha!”

    पियजातिकसुत्तं निट्ठितं सत्तमं।
