    With Potaliya the Wanderer

    अथ खो पोतलियो परिब्बाजको येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो पोतलियं परिब्बाजकं भगवा एतदवोच:

    Atha kho potaliyo paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho potaliyaṁ paribbājakaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

    Then the wanderer Potaliya went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and the Buddha said to him:

    “चत्तारोमे, पोतलिय, पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे चत्तारो?

    “Cattārome, potaliya, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame cattāro?

    “Potaliya, these four people are found in the world. What four?

    इध, पोतलिय, एकच्चो पुग्गलो अवण्णारहस्स अवण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन, नो च खो वण्णारहस्स वण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन।

    Idha, potaliya, ekacco puggalo avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena, no ca kho vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena.

    One person criticizes those deserving of criticism at the right time, truthfully and correctly. But they don’t praise those deserving of praise at the right time, truthfully and correctly.

    इध पन, पोतलिय, एकच्चो पुग्गलो वण्णारहस्स वण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन, नो च खो अवण्णारहस्स अवण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन।

    Idha pana, potaliya, ekacco puggalo vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena, no ca kho avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena.

    Another person praises those deserving of praise … But they don’t criticize those deserving of criticism …

    इध पन, पोतलिय, एकच्चो पुग्गलो नेव अवण्णारहस्स अवण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन, नो च वण्णारहस्स वण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन।

    Idha pana, potaliya, ekacco puggalo neva avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena, no ca vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena.

    Another person doesn’t praise those deserving of praise … Nor do they criticize those deserving of criticism …

    इध पन, पोतलिय, एकच्चो पुग्गलो अवण्णारहस्स च अवण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन, वण्णारहस्स च वण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन।

    Idha pana, potaliya, ekacco puggalo avaṇṇārahassa ca avaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena, vaṇṇārahassa ca vaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena.

    Another person criticizes those deserving of criticism at the right time, truthfully and correctly. And they praise those deserving of praise at the right time, truthfully and correctly.

    इमे खो, पोतलिय, चत्तारो पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। इमेसं खो, पोतलिय, चतुन्नं पुग्गलानं कतमो ते पुग्गलो खमति अभिक्कन्ततरो च पणीततरो चा”ति?

    Ime kho, potaliya, cattāro puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Imesaṁ kho, potaliya, catunnaṁ puggalānaṁ katamo te puggalo khamati abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro cā”ti?

    These are the four people found in the world. Of these four people, who do you believe to be the finest?”

    “चत्तारोमे, भो गोतम, पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे चत्तारो? इध, भो गोतम, एकच्चो पुग्गलो अवण्णारहस्स अवण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन, नो च खो वण्णारहस्स वण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन। इध पन, भो गोतम, एकच्चो पुग्गलो वण्णारहस्स वण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन, नो च खो अवण्णारहस्स अवण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन। इध पन, भो गोतम, एकच्चो पुग्गलो नेव अवण्णारहस्स अवण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन, नो च वण्णारहस्स वण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन। इध पन, भो गोतम, एकच्चो पुग्गलो अवण्णारहस्स च अवण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन, वण्णारहस्स च वण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन। इमे खो, भो गोतम, चत्तारो पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। इमेसं, भो गोतम, चतुन्नं पुग्गलानं य्वायं पुग्गलो नेव अवण्णारहस्स अवण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन, नो च वण्णारहस्स वण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन; अयं मे पुग्गलो खमति इमेसं चतुन्नं पुग्गलानं अभिक्कन्ततरो च पणीततरो च। तं किस्स हेतु? अभिक्कन्ता हेसा, भो गोतम, यदिदं उपेक्खा”ति।

    “Cattārome, bho gotama, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame cattāro? Idha, bho gotama, ekacco puggalo avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena, no ca kho vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena. Idha pana, bho gotama, ekacco puggalo vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena, no ca kho avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena. Idha pana, bho gotama, ekacco puggalo neva avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena, no ca vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena. Idha pana, bho gotama, ekacco puggalo avaṇṇārahassa ca avaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena, vaṇṇārahassa ca vaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena. Ime kho, bho gotama, cattāro puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Imesaṁ, bho gotama, catunnaṁ puggalānaṁ yvāyaṁ puggalo neva avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena, no ca vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena; ayaṁ me puggalo khamati imesaṁ catunnaṁ puggalānaṁ abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro ca. Taṁ kissa hetu? Abhikkantā1 hesā, bho gotama, yadidaṁ upekkhā”ti.

    “Master Gotama, of these four people, it is the person who neither praises those deserving of praise at the right time, truthfully and correctly; nor criticizes those deserving of criticism at the right time, truthfully and correctly. That is the person I believe to be the finest. Why is that? Because, Master Gotama, equanimity is the best.”

    “चत्तारोमे, पोतलिय, पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे चत्तारो …पे… इमे खो, पोतलिय, चत्तारो पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। इमेसं खो, पोतलिय, चतुन्नं पुग्गलानं य्वायं पुग्गलो अवण्णारहस्स च अवण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन, वण्णारहस्स च वण्णं भासिता होति भूतं तच्छं कालेन; अयं इमेसं चतुन्नं पुग्गलानं अभिक्कन्ततरो च पणीततरो च। तं किस्स हेतु? अभिक्कन्ता हेसा, पोतलिय, यदिदं तत्थ तत्थ कालञ्ञुता”ति।

    “Cattārome, potaliya, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame cattāro …pe… ime kho, potaliya, cattāro puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Imesaṁ kho, potaliya, catunnaṁ puggalānaṁ yvāyaṁ puggalo avaṇṇārahassa ca avaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena, vaṇṇārahassa ca vaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena; ayaṁ imesaṁ catunnaṁ puggalānaṁ abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro ca. Taṁ kissa hetu? Abhikkantā hesā, potaliya, yadidaṁ tattha tattha kālaññutā”ti.

    “Potaliya, of these four people, it is the person who criticizes those deserving of criticism at the right time, truthfully and correctly; and praises those deserving of praise at the right time, truthfully and correctly. That is the person I consider to be the finest. Why is that? Because, Potaliya, understanding of time and context is the best.”

    “चत्तारोमे, भो गोतम, पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे चत्तारो …पे… इमे खो, भो गोतम, चत्तारो पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। इमेसं, भो गोतम, चतुन्नं पुग्गलानं य्वायं पुग्गलो अवण्णारहस्स च अवण्णं भासिता भूतं तच्छं कालेन, वण्णारहस्स च वण्णं भासिता भूतं तच्छं कालेन; अयं मे पुग्गलो खमति इमेसं चतुन्नं पुग्गलानं अभिक्कन्ततरो च पणीततरो च। तं किस्स हेतु? अभिक्कन्ता हेसा, भो गोतम, यदिदं तत्थ तत्थ कालञ्ञुता।

    “Cattārome, bho gotama, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame cattāro …pe… ime kho, bho gotama, cattāro puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Imesaṁ, bho gotama, catunnaṁ puggalānaṁ yvāyaṁ puggalo avaṇṇārahassa ca avaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena, vaṇṇārahassa ca vaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena; ayaṁ me puggalo khamati imesaṁ catunnaṁ puggalānaṁ abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro ca. Taṁ kissa hetu? Abhikkantā hesā, bho gotama, yadidaṁ tattha tattha kālaññutā.

    “Master Gotama, of these four people, it is the person who criticizes those deserving of criticism at the right time, truthfully and correctly; and praises those deserving of praise at the right time, truthfully and correctly. That is the person I believe to be the finest. Why is that? Because, Master Gotama, understanding of time and context is the best.

    अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम, अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम। सेय्यथापि, भो गोतम, निक्कुज्जितं वा उक्कुज्जेय्य, पटिच्छन्नं वा विवरेय्य, मूळ्हस्स वा मग्गं आचिक्खेय्य, अन्धकारे वा तेलपज्जोतं धारेय्य: ‘चक्खुमन्तो रूपानि दक्खन्तीऽति; एवमेवं भोता गोतमेन अनेकपरियायेन धम्मो पकासितो। एसाहं भवन्तं गोतमं सरणं गच्छामि धम्मञ्च भिक्खुसङ्घञ्च। उपासकं मं भवं गोतमो धारेतु अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।

    Abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama. Seyyathāpi, bho gotama, nikkujjitaṁ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṁ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṁ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṁ dhāreyya: ‘cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantī’ti; evamevaṁ bhotā gotamena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. Esāhaṁ bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca. Upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.

    Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see what’s there, Master Gotama has made the teaching clear in many ways. I go for refuge to Master Gotama, to the teaching, and to the bhikkhu Saṅgha. From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    असुरो तयो समाधी, छवालातेन पञ्चमं; रागो निसन्ति अत्तहितं, सिक्खा पोतलियेन चाति।

    Asuro tayo samādhī, chavālātena pañcamaṁ; Rāgo nisanti attahitaṁ, sikkhā potaliyena cāti.

    दुतियो पण्णासको समत्तो।
