Faith in Individuals
“पञ्चिमे, भिक्खवे, आदीनवा पुग्गलप्पसादे। कतमे पञ्च?
“Pañcime, bhikkhave, ādīnavā puggalappasāde. Katame pañca?
“Bhikkhus, there are these five drawbacks of placing faith in an individual. What five?
यस्मिं, भिक्खवे, पुग्गले पुग्गलो अभिप्पसन्नो होति, सो तथारूपं आपत्तिं आपन्नो होति यथारूपाय आपत्तिया सङ्घो उक्खिपति। तस्स एवं होति: ‘यो खो म्यायं पुग्गलो पियो मनापो सो सङ्घेन उक्खित्तोऽति। भिक्खूसु अप्पसादबहुलो होति। भिक्खूसु अप्पसादबहुलो समानो अञ्ञे भिक्खू न भजति। अञ्ञे भिक्खू अभजन्तो सद्धम्मं न सुणाति। सद्धम्मं असुणन्तो सद्धम्मा परिहायति। अयं, भिक्खवे, पठमो आदीनवो पुग्गलप्पसादे।
Yasmiṁ, bhikkhave, puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so tathārūpaṁ āpattiṁ āpanno hoti yathārūpāya āpattiyā saṅgho ukkhipati. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘yo kho myāyaṁ puggalo piyo manāpo so saṅghena ukkhitto’ti. Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo hoti. Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo samāno aññe bhikkhū na bhajati. Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṁ na suṇāti. Saddhammaṁ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo ādīnavo puggalappasāde.
The individual to whom a person is devoted falls into an offense such that the Saṅgha suspends them. It occurs to them: ‘This person dear and beloved to me has been suspended by the Saṅgha.’ They lose much of their faith in bhikkhus. So they don’t frequent other bhikkhus, they don’t hear the true teaching, and they fall away from the true teaching. This is the first drawback in placing faith in an individual.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, यस्मिं पुग्गले पुग्गलो अभिप्पसन्नो होति, सो तथारूपं आपत्तिं आपन्नो होति यथारूपाय आपत्तिया सङ्घो अन्ते निसीदापेति। तस्स एवं होति: ‘यो खो म्यायं पुग्गलो पियो मनापो सो सङ्घेन अन्ते निसीदापितोऽति। भिक्खूसु अप्पसादबहुलो होति। भिक्खूसु अप्पसादबहुलो समानो अञ्ञे भिक्खू न भजति। अञ्ञे भिक्खू अभजन्तो सद्धम्मं न सुणाति। सद्धम्मं असुणन्तो सद्धम्मा परिहायति। अयं, भिक्खवे, दुतियो आदीनवो पुग्गलप्पसादे।

Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘yo kho myāyaṁ puggalo piyo manāpo so saṅghena ante nisīdāpito’ti. Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo hoti. Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo samāno aññe bhikkhū na bhajati. Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṁ na suṇāti. Saddhammaṁ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyo ādīnavo puggalappasāde.
Furthermore, the individual to whom a person is devoted falls into an offense such that the Saṅgha makes them sit at the end of the line. … This is the second drawback in placing faith in an individual.
पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, यस्मिं पुग्गले पुग्गलो अभिप्पसन्नो होति, सो दिसापक्कन्तो होति …पे… सो विब्भन्तो होति …पे… सो कालङ्कतो होति। तस्स एवं होति: ‘यो खो म्यायं पुग्गलो पियो मनापो सो कालङ्कतोऽति। अञ्ञे भिक्खू न भजति। अञ्ञे भिक्खू अभजन्तो सद्धम्मं न सुणाति। सद्धम्मं असुणन्तो सद्धम्मा परिहायति। अयं, भिक्खवे, पञ्चमो आदीनवो पुग्गलप्पसादे।
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, yasmiṁ puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so disāpakkanto hoti …pe… so vibbhanto hoti …pe… so kālaṅkato hoti. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘yo kho myāyaṁ puggalo piyo manāpo so kālaṅkato’ti. Aññe bhikkhū na bhajati. Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṁ na suṇāti. Saddhammaṁ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamo ādīnavo puggalappasāde.
Furthermore, the individual to whom a person is devoted departs for another region … disrobes … passes away. It occurs to them: ‘This person dear and beloved to me has passed away.’ So they don’t frequent other bhikkhus, they don’t hear the true teaching, and they fall away from the true teaching. This is the fifth drawback in placing faith in an individual.
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च आदीनवा पुग्गलप्पसादे”ति।
Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ādīnavā puggalappasāde”ti.
These are the five drawbacks of placing faith in an individual.”
