    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला लोके उप्पज्जमाना उप्पज्जन्ति बहुजनहिताय बहुजनसुखाय, बहुनो जनस्स अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय देवमनुस्सानं। कतमे द्वे? तथागतो च अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो, राजा च चक्कवत्ती। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पुग्गला लोके उप्पज्जमाना उप्पज्जन्ति बहुजनहिताय बहुजनसुखाय, बहुनो जनस्स अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय देवमनुस्सानन्”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, puggalā loke uppajjamānā uppajjanti bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya, bahuno janassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanussānaṁ. Katame dve? Tathāgato ca arahaṁ sammāsambuddho, rājā ca cakkavattī. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve puggalā loke uppajjamānā uppajjanti bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya, bahuno janassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanussānan”ti.

    “Two people, bhikkhus, arise in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans. What two? The Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha; and the wheel-turning monarch. These two people arise in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला लोके उप्पज्जमाना उप्पज्जन्ति अच्छरियमनुस्सा। कतमे द्वे? तथागतो च अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो, राजा च चक्कवत्ती। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पुग्गला लोके उप्पज्जमाना उप्पज्जन्ति अच्छरियमनुस्सा”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, puggalā loke uppajjamānā uppajjanti acchariyamanussā. Katame dve? Tathāgato ca arahaṁ sammāsambuddho, rājā ca cakkavattī. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve puggalā loke uppajjamānā uppajjanti acchariyamanussā”ti.

    “Two people, bhikkhus, arise in the world who are incredible human beings. What two? The Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha; and the wheel-turning monarch. These are the two people who arise in the world who are incredible human beings.”

    “द्विन्नं, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलानं कालकिरिया बहुनो जनस्स अनुतप्पा होति। कतमेसं द्विन्नं? तथागतस्स च अरहतो सम्मासम्बुद्धस्स, रञ्ञो च चक्कवत्तिस्स। इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, द्विन्नं पुग्गलानं कालकिरिया बहुनो जनस्स अनुतप्पा होती”ति।

    “Dvinnaṁ, bhikkhave, puggalānaṁ kālakiriyā bahuno janassa anutappā hoti. Katamesaṁ dvinnaṁ? Tathāgatassa ca arahato sammāsambuddhassa, rañño ca cakkavattissa. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, dvinnaṁ puggalānaṁ kālakiriyā bahuno janassa anutappā hotī”ti.

    “There are two people, bhikkhus, whose death is regretted by many people. What two? The Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha; and the wheel-turning monarch. These are the two people, bhikkhus, whose death is regretted by many people.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, थूपारहा। कतमे द्वे? तथागतो च अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो, राजा च चक्कवत्ती। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे थूपारहा”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, thūpārahā. Katame dve? Tathāgato ca arahaṁ sammāsambuddho, rājā ca cakkavattī. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve thūpārahā”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, these two are worthy of a monument. What two? The Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha; and the wheel-turning monarch. These are the two who are worthy of a monument.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, बुद्धा। कतमे द्वे? तथागतो च अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो, पच्चेकबुद्धो च। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे बुद्धा”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, buddhā. Katame dve? Tathāgato ca arahaṁ sammāsambuddho, paccekabuddho ca. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve buddhā”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, there are two kinds of Buddhas. What two? The Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha; and an independent Buddha. These are the two kinds of Buddhas.”

    “These two, bhikkhus, are not startled by a crack of thunder. What two? A bhikkhu who has ended defilements; and a thoroughbred elephant. These are the two who are not startled by a crack of thunder.”

    “These two, bhikkhus, are not startled by a crack of thunder. What two? A bhikkhu who has ended defilements; and a lion, king of beasts. These are the two who are not startled by a crack of thunder.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, अत्थवसे सम्पस्समाना किंपुरिसा मानुसिं वाचं न भासन्ति। कतमे द्वे? मा च मुसा भणिम्हा, मा च परं अभूतेन अब्भाचिक्खिम्हाति। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे अत्थवसे सम्पस्समाना किंपुरिसा मानुसिं वाचं न भासन्ती”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, atthavase sampassamānā kiṁpurisā mānusiṁ vācaṁ na bhāsanti. Katame dve? Mā ca musā bhaṇimhā, mā ca paraṁ abhūtena abbhācikkhimhāti. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve atthavase sampassamānā kiṁpurisā mānusiṁ vācaṁ na bhāsantī”ti.

    “Fauns see two reasons not to use human speech. What two? Thinking: ‘May we not lie, and may we not misrepresent others with falsehoods.’ Fauns see two reasons not to use human speech.”

    “द्विन्नं धम्मानं, भिक्खवे, अतित्तो अप्पटिवानो मातुगामो कालं करोति। कतमेसं द्विन्नं? मेथुनसमापत्तिया च विजायनस्स च। इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, द्विन्नं धम्मानं अतित्तो अप्पटिवानो मातुगामो कालं करोती”ति।

    “Dvinnaṁ dhammānaṁ, bhikkhave, atitto appaṭivāno mātugāmo kālaṁ karoti. Katamesaṁ dvinnaṁ? Methunasamāpattiyā ca vijāyanassa ca. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, dvinnaṁ dhammānaṁ atitto appaṭivāno mātugāmo kālaṁ karotī”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, females die without getting enough of two things. What two? Sexual intercourse and giving birth. Females die without getting enough of these two things.”

    “असन्तसन्निवासञ्च वो, भिक्खवे, देसेस्सामि सन्तसन्निवासञ्च। तं सुणाथ, साधुकं मनसि करोथ, भासिस्सामी”ति।

    “Asantasannivāsañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi santasannivāsañca. Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, I will teach you about living with bad people and living with good people. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति खो ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं। भगवा एतदवोच:

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca:

    “Yes, sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

    “कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, असन्तसन्निवासो होति, कथञ्च असन्तो सन्निवसन्ति?

    “Kathañca, bhikkhave, asantasannivāso hoti, kathañca asanto sannivasanti?

    “What is it like living with bad people? How do bad people live together?

    इध, भिक्खवे, थेरस्स भिक्खुनो एवं होति: ‘थेरोपि मं न वदेय्य, मज्झिमोपि मं न वदेय्य, नवोपि मं न वदेय्य; थेरम्पाहं न वदेय्यं, मज्झिमम्पाहं न वदेय्यं, नवम्पाहं न वदेय्यं। थेरो चेपि मं वदेय्य अहितानुकम्पी मं वदेय्य नो हितानुकम्पी, नोति नं वदेय्यं विहेठेय्यं पस्सम्पिस्स नप्पटिकरेय्यं।

    Idha, bhikkhave, therassa bhikkhuno evaṁ hoti: ‘theropi maṁ na vadeyya, majjhimopi maṁ na vadeyya, navopi maṁ na vadeyya; therampāhaṁ na vadeyyaṁ, majjhimampāhaṁ na vadeyyaṁ, navampāhaṁ na vadeyyaṁ. Thero cepi maṁ vadeyya ahitānukampī maṁ vadeyya no hitānukampī, noti naṁ vadeyyaṁ viheṭheyyaṁ1 passampissa nappaṭikareyyaṁ.

    It’s when a senior bhikkhu thinks: ‘No bhikkhu, whether senior, middle, or junior, should admonish me; and I shouldn’t admonish any bhikkhu, whether senior, middle, or junior. If a bhikkhu—whether senior, middle, or junior—were to admonish me, they wouldn’t be sympathetic, and I’d bother them by saying “No!” And anyway I wouldn’t deal with it even if I saw what I did wrong.’

    मज्झिमो चेपि मं वदेय्य …पे… नवो चेपि मं वदेय्य, अहितानुकम्पी मं वदेय्य नो हितानुकम्पी, नोति नं वदेय्यं विहेठेय्यं पस्सम्पिस्स नप्पटिकरेय्यंऽ। मज्झिमस्सपि भिक्खुनो एवं होति …पे… नवस्सपि भिक्खुनो एवं होति: ‘थेरोपि मं न वदेय्य, मज्झिमोपि मं न वदेय्य, नवोपि मं न वदेय्य; थेरम्पाहं न वदेय्यं, मज्झिमम्पाहं न वदेय्यं, नवम्पाहं न वदेय्यं। थेरो चेपि मं वदेय्य अहितानुकम्पी मं वदेय्य नो हितानुकम्पी नोति नं वदेय्यं विहेठेय्यं पस्सम्पिस्स नप्पटिकरेय्यं। मज्झिमो चेपि मं वदेय्य … नवो चेपि मं वदेय्य अहितानुकम्पी मं वदेय्य नो हितानुकम्पी, नोति नं वदेय्यं विहेठेय्यं पस्सम्पिस्स नप्पटिकरेय्यंऽ।

    Majjhimo cepi maṁ vadeyya …pe… navo cepi maṁ vadeyya, ahitānukampī maṁ vadeyya no hitānukampī, noti naṁ vadeyyaṁ viheṭheyyaṁ passampissa nappaṭikareyyaṁ’. Majjhimassapi bhikkhuno evaṁ hoti …pe… navassapi bhikkhuno evaṁ hoti: ‘theropi maṁ na vadeyya, majjhimopi maṁ na vadeyya, navopi maṁ na vadeyya; therampāhaṁ na vadeyyaṁ, majjhimampāhaṁ na vadeyyaṁ, navampāhaṁ na vadeyyaṁ. Thero cepi maṁ vadeyya ahitānukampī maṁ vadeyya no hitānukampī noti naṁ vadeyyaṁ viheṭheyyaṁ passampissa nappaṭikareyyaṁ. Majjhimo cepi maṁ vadeyya … navo cepi maṁ vadeyya ahitānukampī maṁ vadeyya no hitānukampī, noti naṁ vadeyyaṁ viheṭheyyaṁ passampissa nappaṭikareyyaṁ’.

    And a middle or a junior bhikkhu also thinks: ‘No bhikkhu, whether senior, middle, or junior, should admonish me; and I shouldn’t admonish any bhikkhu, whether senior, middle, or junior. If a bhikkhu—whether senior, middle, or junior—were to admonish me, they wouldn’t be sympathetic, and I’d bother them by saying “No!” And anyway I wouldn’t deal with it even if I saw what I did wrong.’

    एवं खो, भिक्खवे, असन्तसन्निवासो होति, एवञ्च असन्तो सन्निवसन्ति।

    Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, asantasannivāso hoti, evañca asanto sannivasanti.

    That’s what it’s like living with bad people; that’s how bad people live together.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, सन्तसन्निवासो होति, कथञ्च सन्तो सन्निवसन्ति? इध, भिक्खवे, थेरस्स भिक्खुनो एवं होति:

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, santasannivāso hoti, kathañca santo sannivasanti? Idha, bhikkhave, therassa bhikkhuno evaṁ hoti:

    What is it like living with good people? How do good people live together? It’s when a senior bhikkhu thinks:

    ‘थेरोपि मं वदेय्य, मज्झिमोपि मं वदेय्य, नवोपि मं वदेय्य; थेरम्पाहं वदेय्यं, मज्झिमम्पाहं वदेय्यं, नवम्पाहं वदेय्यं। थेरो चेपि मं वदेय्य हितानुकम्पी मं वदेय्य नो अहितानुकम्पी, साधूति नं वदेय्यं न नं विहेठेय्यं पस्सम्पिस्स पटिकरेय्यं। मज्झिमो चेपि मं वदेय्य …पे… नवो चेपि मं वदेय्य हितानुकम्पी मं वदेय्य नो अहितानुकम्पी, साधूति नं वदेय्यं न नं विहेठेय्यं पस्सम्पिस्स पटिकरेय्यंऽ।

    ‘theropi maṁ vadeyya, majjhimopi maṁ vadeyya, navopi maṁ vadeyya; therampāhaṁ vadeyyaṁ, majjhimampāhaṁ vadeyyaṁ, navampāhaṁ vadeyyaṁ.     ‘Any bhikkhu, whether senior, middle, or junior, should admonish me; and I should admonish any bhikkhu, whether senior, middle, or junior. If a bhikkhu—whether senior, middle, or junior—were to admonish me, they’d be sympathetic, so I wouldn’t bother them, but say “Thank you!” And I’d deal with it when I saw what I did wrong.’

    मज्झिमस्सपि भिक्खुनो एवं होति …पे… नवस्सपि भिक्खुनो एवं होति: ‘थेरोपि मं वदेय्य, मज्झिमोपि मं वदेय्य, नवोपि मं वदेय्य; थेरम्पाहं वदेय्यं, मज्झिमम्पाहं वदेय्यं, नवम्पाहं वदेय्यं। थेरो चेपि मं वदेय्य हितानुकम्पी मं वदेय्य नो अहितानुकम्पी, साधूति नं वदेय्यं न नं विहेठेय्यं पस्सम्पिस्स पटिकरेय्यं। मज्झिमो चेपि मं वदेय्य …पे… नवो चेपि मं वदेय्य हितानुकम्पी मं वदेय्य नो अहितानुकम्पी, साधूति नं वदेय्यं न नं विहेठेय्यं पस्सम्पिस्स पटिकरेय्यंऽ।

    Majjhimassapi bhikkhuno evaṁ hoti …pe… navassapi bhikkhuno evaṁ hoti: ‘theropi maṁ vadeyya, majjhimopi maṁ vadeyya, navopi maṁ vadeyya; therampāhaṁ vadeyyaṁ, majjhimampāhaṁ vadeyyaṁ, navampāhaṁ vadeyyaṁ.     And a middle or a junior bhikkhu also thinks: ‘Any bhikkhu, whether senior, middle, or junior, may admonish me; and I’ll admonish any bhikkhu, whether senior, middle, or junior. If a bhikkhu—whether senior, middle, or junior—were to admonish me, they’d be sympathetic, so I wouldn’t bother them, but say “Thank you!” And I’d deal with it when I saw what I did wrong.’

    एवं खो, भिक्खवे, सन्तसन्निवासो होति, एवञ्च सन्तो सन्निवसन्ती”ति।

    Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, santasannivāso hoti, evañca santo sannivasantī”ti.

    That’s what it’s like living with good people; that’s how good people live together.”

    “यस्मिं, भिक्खवे, अधिकरणे उभतो वचीसंसारो दिट्ठिपळासो चेतसो आघातो अप्पच्चयो अनभिरद्धि अज्झत्तं अवूपसन्तं होति, तस्मेतं, भिक्खवे, अधिकरणे पाटिकङ्खं: ‘दीघत्ताय खरत्ताय वाळत्ताय संवत्तिस्सति, भिक्खू च न फासुं विहरिस्सन्तिऽ।

    “Yasmiṁ, bhikkhave, adhikaraṇe ubhato vacīsaṁsāro diṭṭhipaḷāso cetaso āghāto appaccayo anabhiraddhi ajjhattaṁ avūpasantaṁ hoti, tasmetaṁ, bhikkhave, adhikaraṇe pāṭikaṅkhaṁ: ‘dīghattāya kharattāya vāḷattāya saṁvattissati, bhikkhū ca na phāsuṁ2 viharissanti’.

    “In a disciplinary issue, when the tale-bearing on both sides—with contempt for each other’s views, resentful, bitter, and exasperated—is not settled internally, you can expect that this disciplinary issue will be long, fractious, and troublesome, and the bhikkhus won’t live comfortably.

    यस्मिञ्च खो, भिक्खवे, अधिकरणे उभतो वचीसंसारो दिट्ठिपळासो चेतसो आघातो अप्पच्चयो अनभिरद्धि अज्झत्तं सुवूपसन्तं होति, तस्मेतं, भिक्खवे, अधिकरणे पाटिकङ्खं: ‘न दीघत्ताय खरत्ताय वाळत्ताय संवत्तिस्सति, भिक्खू च फासुं विहरिस्सन्तीऽ”ति।

    Yasmiñca kho, bhikkhave, adhikaraṇe ubhato vacīsaṁsāro diṭṭhipaḷāso cetaso āghāto appaccayo anabhiraddhi ajjhattaṁ suvūpasantaṁ hoti, tasmetaṁ, bhikkhave, adhikaraṇe pāṭikaṅkhaṁ: ‘na dīghattāya kharattāya vāḷattāya saṁvattissati, bhikkhū ca phāsuṁ viharissantī’”ti.

    In a disciplinary issue, when the tale-bearing on both sides—with contempt for each other’s views, resentful, bitter, and exasperated—is well settled internally, you can expect that this disciplinary issue won’t lead to lasting acrimony and enmity, and the bhikkhus will live comfortably.”

    पुग्गलवग्गो पठमो।
