    RAB8 Protein

RAB8 protein (MEL) contains the four GTP/GDP-binding sites present in all RAS proteins. The putative effector-binding site of MEL is similar to that of RAB/YPT proteins. However, MEL contains a C-terminal CAAX motif characteristic of many RAS superfamily members but which is not found in YPT1 and the majority of RAB proteins. Members of the RAS superfamily are small GTP/GDP-binding proteins. RAB/YPT family proteins may play a role in transport of proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi and the plasma membrane. (from OMIM 165040 and NCI) (NCI Thesaurus)
