11. Abbreviated Texts Beginning With Greed
“रागस्स, भिक्खवे, अभिञ्ञाय अट्ठ धम्मा भावेतब्बा। कतमे अट्ठ? सम्मादिट्ठि, सम्मासङ्कप्पो, सम्मावाचा, सम्माकम्मन्तो, सम्माआजीवो, सम्मावायामो, सम्मासति, सम्मासमाधि—रागस्स, भिक्खवे, अभिञ्ञाय इमे अट्ठ धम्मा भावेतब्बा”ति।
“Rāgassa, bhikkhave, abhiññāya aṭṭha dhammā bhāvetabbā. Katame aṭṭha? Sammādiṭṭhi, sammāsaṅkappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājīvo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhi—rāgassa, bhikkhave, abhiññāya ime aṭṭha dhammā bhāvetabbā”ti.
“For insight into greed, eight things should be developed. What eight? Right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. For insight into greed, these eight things should be developed.”
“रागस्स, भिक्खवे, अभिञ्ञाय अट्ठ धम्मा भावेतब्बा। कतमे अट्ठ? अज्झत्तं रूपसञ्ञी बहिद्धा रूपानि पस्सति परित्तानि सुवण्णदुब्बण्णानि, तानि अभिभुय्य ‘जानामि पस्सामीऽति एवंसञ्ञी होति। अज्झत्तं रूपसञ्ञी बहिद्धा रूपानि पस्सति अप्पमाणानि सुवण्णदुब्बण्णानि, तानि अभिभुय्य ‘जानामि पस्सामीऽति एवंसञ्ञी होति। अज्झत्तं अरूपसञ्ञी बहिद्धा रूपानि पस्सति परित्तानि सुवण्णदुब्बण्णानि, तानि अभिभुय्य ‘जानामि पस्सामीऽति एवंसञ्ञी होति। अज्झत्तं अरूपसञ्ञी बहिद्धा रूपानि पस्सति अप्पमाणानि सुवण्णदुब्बण्णानि, तानि अभिभुय्य ‘जानामि पस्सामीऽति एवंसञ्ञी होति। अज्झत्तं अरूपसञ्ञी बहिद्धा रूपानि पस्सति नीलानि नीलवण्णानि नीलनिदस्सनानि नीलनिभासानि पीतानि पीतवण्णानि …पे… लोहितकानि लोहितकवण्णानि …पे… ओदातानि ओदातवण्णानि …पे… ओदातनिभासानि, तानि अभिभुय्य ‘जानामि पस्सामीऽति एवंसञ्ञी होति—रागस्स, भिक्खवे, अभिञ्ञाय इमे अट्ठ धम्मा भावेतब्बा”।
“Rāgassa, bhikkhave, abhiññāya aṭṭha dhammā bhāvetabbā. Katame aṭṭha? Ajjhattaṁ rūpasaññī bahiddhā rūpāni passati parittāni suvaṇṇadubbaṇṇāni, tāni abhibhuyya ‘jānāmi passāmī’ti evaṁsaññī hoti. “For insight into greed, eight things should be developed. What eight? Perceiving form internally, they see visions externally, limited, both pretty and ugly. Mastering them, they perceive: ‘I know and see.’ Perceiving form internally, they see visions externally, limitless, both pretty and ugly. … Not perceiving form internally, they see visions externally, limited, both pretty and ugly. … Not perceiving form internally, they see visions externally, limitless, both pretty and ugly. … Not perceiving form internally, they see visions externally, blue, with blue color, blue hue, and blue tint. … yellow … red … Not perceiving form internally, they see visions externally, white, with white color, white hue, and white tint. Mastering them, they perceive: ‘I know and see.’ For insight into greed, these eight things should be developed.”
“रागस्स, भिक्खवे, अभिञ्ञाय अट्ठ धम्मा भावेतब्बा। कतमे अट्ठ? रूपी रूपानि पस्सति, अज्झत्तं अरूपसञ्ञी बहिद्धा रूपानि पस्सति, सुभन्तेव अधिमुत्तो होति, सब्बसो रूपसञ्ञानं समतिक्कमा पटिघसञ्ञानं अत्थङ्गमा नानत्तसञ्ञानं अमनसिकारा ‘अनन्तो आकासोऽति आकासानञ्चायतनं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति, सब्बसो आकासानञ्चायतनं समतिक्कम्म ‘अनन्तं विञ्ञाणन्ऽति विञ्ञाणञ्चायतनं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति, सब्बसो विञ्ञाणञ्चायतनं समतिक्कम्म ‘नत्थि किञ्चीऽति आकिञ्चञ्ञायतनं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति, सब्बसो आकिञ्चञ्ञायतनं समतिक्कम्म नेवसञ्ञानासञ्ञायतनं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति, सब्बसो नेवसञ्ञानासञ्ञायतनं समतिक्कम्म सञ्ञावेदयितनिरोधं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति—रागस्स, भिक्खवे, अभिञ्ञाय इमे अट्ठ धम्मा भावेतब्बा”।
“Rāgassa, bhikkhave, abhiññāya aṭṭha dhammā bhāvetabbā. Katame aṭṭha? Rūpī rūpāni passati, ajjhattaṁ arūpasaññī bahiddhā rūpāni passati, subhanteva adhimutto hoti, sabbaso rūpasaññānaṁ samatikkamā paṭighasaññānaṁ atthaṅgamā nānattasaññānaṁ amanasikārā ‘ananto ākāso’ti ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati, sabbaso ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ samatikkamma ‘anantaṁ viññāṇan’ti viññāṇañcāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati, sabbaso viññāṇañcāyatanaṁ samatikkamma ‘natthi kiñcī’ti ākiñcaññāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati, sabbaso ākiñcaññāyatanaṁ samatikkamma nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati, sabbaso nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ samatikkamma saññāvedayitanirodhaṁ upasampajja viharati—rāgassa, bhikkhave, abhiññāya ime aṭṭha dhammā bhāvetabbā”.
“For insight into greed, eight things should be developed. What eight? Having physical form, they see visions … not perceiving form internally, they see visions externally … they’re focused only on beauty … going totally beyond perceptions of form, with the ending of perceptions of impingement, not focusing on perceptions of diversity, aware that ‘space is infinite’, they enter and remain in the dimension of infinite space … going totally beyond the dimension of infinite space, aware that ‘consciousness is infinite’, they enter and remain in the dimension of infinite consciousness … going totally beyond the dimension of infinite consciousness, aware that ‘there is nothing at all’, they enter and remain in the dimension of nothingness … going totally beyond the dimension of nothingness, they enter and remain in the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception … going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, they enter and remain in the cessation of perception and feeling … For insight into greed, these eight things should be developed.”
“रागस्स, भिक्खवे, परिञ्ञाय …पे… परिक्खयाय … पहानाय … खयाय … वयाय … विरागाय … निरोधाय … चागाय … पटिनिस्सग्गाय …पे… इमे अट्ठ धम्मा भावेतब्बा”।
“Rāgassa, bhikkhave, pariññāya …pe… parikkhayāya … pahānāya … khayāya … vayāya … virāgāya … nirodhāya … cāgāya … paṭinissaggāya …pe… ime aṭṭha dhammā bhāvetabbā”.
“For the complete understanding of greed … complete ending … giving up … ending … vanishing … fading away … cessation … giving away … letting go … these eight things should be developed.”
“दोसस्स …पे… मोहस्स … कोधस्स … उपनाहस्स … मक्खस्स … पळासस्स … इस्साय … मच्छरियस्स … मायाय … साठेय्यस्स … थम्भस्स … सारम्भस्स … मानस्स … अतिमानस्स … मदस्स … पमादस्स अभिञ्ञाय …पे… परिञ्ञाय … परिक्खयाय … पहानाय … खयाय … वयाय … विरागाय … निरोधाय … चागाय … पटिनिस्सग्गाय …पे… इमे अट्ठ धम्मा भावेतब्बा”ति।
“Dosassa …pe… mohassa … kodhassa … upanāhassa … makkhassa … paḷāsassa … issāya … macchariyassa … māyāya … sāṭheyyassa … thambhassa … sārambhassa … mānassa … atimānassa … madassa … pamādassa abhiññāya …pe… pariññāya … parikkhayāya … pahānāya … khayāya … vayāya … virāgāya … nirodhāya … cāgāya … paṭinissaggāya …pe… ime aṭṭha dhammā bhāvetabbā”ti.
“Of hate … delusion … anger … hostility … disdain … contempt … jealousy … stinginess … deceitfulness … deviousness … obstinacy … aggression … conceit … arrogance … vanity … for insight into negligence … complete understanding … complete ending … giving up … ending … vanishing … fading away … cessation … giving away … letting go of negligence these eight things should be developed.”
रागपेय्यालं निट्ठितं।
