    “तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, अपि नु तुम्हेहि दिट्ठं वा सुतं वा: ‘अयं पुरिसो पाणातिपातं पहाय पाणातिपाता पटिविरतोति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा पाणातिपाता वेरमणिहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्तीऽ”ति?

    “Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu tumhehi diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā: ‘ayaṁ puriso pāṇātipātaṁ pahāya pāṇātipātā paṭiviratoti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā pāṇātipātā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’”ti?

    “What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of a person who has given up killing living creatures, and then the kings have them arrested for that, and execute, imprison, or banish them, or do what the case requires?”

    “नो हेतं, भन्ते”।

    “No hetaṁ, bhante”.

    “No, sir.”

    “साधु, भिक्खवे। मयापि खो एतं, भिक्खवे, नेव दिट्ठं न सुतं: ‘अयं पुरिसो पाणातिपातं पहाय पाणातिपाता पटिविरतोति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा पाणातिपाता वेरमणिहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्तीऽति। अपि च ख्वस्स तथेव पापकम्मं पवेदेन्ति: ‘अयं पुरिसो इत्थिं वा पुरिसं वा जीविता वोरोपेसीति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा पाणातिपातहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्ति। अपि नु तुम्हेहि एवरूपं दिट्ठं वा सुतं वाऽ”ति?

    “Sādhu, bhikkhave. Mayāpi kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, neva diṭṭhaṁ na sutaṁ: ‘ayaṁ puriso pāṇātipātaṁ pahāya pāṇātipātā paṭiviratoti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā pāṇātipātā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’ti. Api ca khvassa1 tatheva pāpakammaṁ pavedenti: ‘ayaṁ puriso itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vā jīvitā voropesīti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā pāṇātipātahetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karonti. Api nu tumhehi evarūpaṁ diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā’”ti?

    “Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing. Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed: ‘This person has murdered a man or a woman.’ Then the kings have them arrested for killing, and execute, imprison, or banish them, or do what the case requires. Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”

    “दिट्ठञ्च नो, भन्ते, सुतञ्च सुय्यिस्सति चा”ति।

    “Diṭṭhañca no, bhante, sutañca suyyissati2 cā”ti.

    “Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”

    “तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, अपि नु तुम्हेहि दिट्ठं वा सुतं वा: ‘अयं पुरिसो अदिन्नादानं पहाय अदिन्नादाना पटिविरतोति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा अदिन्नादाना वेरमणिहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्तीऽ”ति?

    “Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu tumhehi diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā: ‘ayaṁ puriso adinnādānaṁ pahāya adinnādānā paṭiviratoti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā adinnādānā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’”ti?

    “What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of a person who has given up stealing, and then the kings have them arrested for that …?”

    “नो हेतं भन्ते”।

    “No hetaṁ bhante”.

    “No, sir.”

    “साधु, भिक्खवे। मयापि खो एतं, भिक्खवे, नेव दिट्ठं न सुतं: ‘अयं पुरिसो अदिन्नादानं पहाय अदिन्नादाना पटिविरतोति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा अदिन्नादाना वेरमणिहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्तीऽति। अपि च ख्वस्स तथेव पापकम्मं पवेदेन्ति: ‘अयं पुरिसो गामा वा अरञ्ञा वा अदिन्नं थेय्यसङ्खातं आदियीति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा अदिन्नादानहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्ति। अपि नु तुम्हेहि एवरूपं दिट्ठं वा सुतं वाऽ”ति?

    “Sādhu, bhikkhave. Mayāpi kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, neva diṭṭhaṁ na sutaṁ: ‘ayaṁ puriso adinnādānaṁ pahāya adinnādānā paṭiviratoti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā adinnādānā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’ti. Api ca khvassa tatheva pāpakammaṁ pavedenti: ‘ayaṁ puriso gāmā vā araññā vā adinnaṁ theyyasaṅkhātaṁ ādiyīti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā adinnādānahetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karonti. Api nu tumhehi evarūpaṁ diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā’”ti?

    “Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing. Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed: ‘This person took something from a village or wilderness, with the intention to commit theft.’ Then the kings have them arrested for stealing … Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”

    “दिट्ठञ्च नो, भन्ते, सुतञ्च सुय्यिस्सति चा”ति।

    “Diṭṭhañca no, bhante, sutañca suyyissati cā”ti.

    “Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”

    “तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, अपि नु तुम्हेहि दिट्ठं वा सुतं वा: ‘अयं पुरिसो कामेसुमिच्छाचारं पहाय कामेसुमिच्छाचारा पटिविरतोति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा कामेसुमिच्छाचारा वेरमणिहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्तीऽ”ति?

    “Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu tumhehi diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā: ‘ayaṁ puriso kāmesumicchācāraṁ pahāya kāmesumicchācārā paṭiviratoti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā kāmesumicchācārā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’”ti?

    “What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of a person who has given up sexual misconduct, and then the kings have them arrested for that …?”

    “नो हेतं, भन्ते”।

    “No hetaṁ, bhante”.

    “No, sir.”

    “साधु, भिक्खवे। मयापि खो एतं, भिक्खवे, नेव दिट्ठं न सुतं: ‘अयं पुरिसो कामेसुमिच्छाचारं पहाय कामेसुमिच्छाचारा पटिविरतोति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा कामेसुमिच्छाचारा वेरमणिहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्तीऽति। अपि च ख्वस्स तथेव पापकम्मं पवेदेन्ति: ‘अयं पुरिसो परित्थीसु परकुमारीसु चारित्तं आपज्जीति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा कामेसुमिच्छाचारहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्ति। अपि नु तुम्हेहि एवरूपं दिट्ठं वा सुतं वाऽ”ति?

    “Sādhu, bhikkhave. Mayāpi kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, neva diṭṭhaṁ na sutaṁ: ‘ayaṁ puriso kāmesumicchācāraṁ pahāya kāmesumicchācārā paṭiviratoti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā kāmesumicchācārā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’ti. Api ca khvassa tatheva pāpakammaṁ pavedenti: ‘ayaṁ puriso paritthīsu parakumārīsu cārittaṁ āpajjīti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā kāmesumicchācārahetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karonti. Api nu tumhehi evarūpaṁ diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā’”ti?

    “Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing. Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed: ‘This person had sexual relations with women or maidens under someone else’s protection.’ Then the kings have them arrested for that … Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”

    “दिट्ठञ्च नो, भन्ते, सुतञ्च सुय्यिस्सति चा”ति।

    “Diṭṭhañca no, bhante, sutañca suyyissati cā”ti.

    “Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”

    “तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, अपि नु तुम्हेहि दिट्ठं वा सुतं वा: ‘अयं पुरिसो मुसावादं पहाय मुसावादा पटिविरतोति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा मुसावादा वेरमणिहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्तीऽ”ति?

    “Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu tumhehi diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā: ‘ayaṁ puriso musāvādaṁ pahāya musāvādā paṭiviratoti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā musāvādā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’”ti?

    “What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of a person who has given up lying, and then the kings have them arrested for that …?”

    “नो हेतं, भन्ते”।

    “No hetaṁ, bhante”.

    “No, sir.”

    “साधु, भिक्खवे। मयापि खो एतं, भिक्खवे, नेव दिट्ठं न सुतं: ‘अयं पुरिसो मुसावादं पहाय मुसावादा पटिविरतोति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा मुसावादा वेरमणिहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्तीऽति। अपि च ख्वस्स तथेव पापकम्मं पवेदेन्ति: ‘अयं पुरिसो गहपतिस्स वा गहपतिपुत्तस्स वा मुसावादेन अत्थं पभञ्जीति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा मुसावादहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्ति। अपि नु तुम्हेहि एवरूपं दिट्ठं वा सुतं वाऽ”ति?

    “Sādhu, bhikkhave. Mayāpi kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, neva diṭṭhaṁ na sutaṁ: ‘ayaṁ puriso musāvādaṁ pahāya musāvādā paṭiviratoti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā musāvādā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’ti. Api ca khvassa tatheva pāpakammaṁ pavedenti: ‘ayaṁ puriso gahapatissa vā gahapatiputtassa vā musāvādena atthaṁ pabhañjīti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā musāvādahetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karonti. Api nu tumhehi evarūpaṁ diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā’”ti?

    “Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing. Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed: ‘This person has ruined a householder or householder’s child by lying.’ Then the kings have them arrested for that … Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”

    “दिट्ठञ्च नो, भन्ते, सुतञ्च सुय्यिस्सति चा”ति।

    “Diṭṭhañca no, bhante, sutañca suyyissati cā”ti.

    “Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”

    “तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, अपि नु तुम्हेहि दिट्ठं वा सुतं वा: ‘अयं पुरिसो सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठानं पहाय सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठाना पटिविरतोति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठाना वेरमणिहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्तीऽ”ति?

    “Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu tumhehi diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā: ‘ayaṁ puriso surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ pahāya surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭiviratoti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’”ti?

    “What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of a person who has given up alcoholic drinks that cause negligence, and then the kings have them arrested for that, and execute, imprison, or banish them, or do what the case requires?”

    “नो हेतं, भन्ते”।

    “No hetaṁ, bhante”.

    “No, sir.”

    “साधु, भिक्खवे। मयापि खो एतं, भिक्खवे, नेव दिट्ठं न सुतं: ‘अयं पुरिसो सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठानं पहाय सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठाना पटिविरतोति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठाना वेरमणिहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्तीऽति। अपि च ख्वस्स तथेव पापकम्मं पवेदेन्ति: ‘अयं पुरिसो सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठानं अनुयुत्तो इत्थिं वा पुरिसं वा जीविता वोरोपेसि; अयं पुरिसो सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठानं अनुयुत्तो गामा वा अरञ्ञा वा अदिन्नं थेय्यसङ्खातं आदियि; अयं पुरिसो सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठानं अनुयुत्तो परित्थीसु परकुमारीसु चारित्तं आपज्जि; अयं पुरिसो सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठानं अनुयुत्तो गहपतिस्स वा गहपतिपुत्तस्स वा मुसावादेन अत्थं पभञ्जीति। तमेनं राजानो गहेत्वा सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठानहेतु हनन्ति वा बन्धन्ति वा पब्बाजेन्ति वा यथापच्चयं वा करोन्ति। अपि नु तुम्हेहि एवरूपं दिट्ठं वा सुतं वाऽ”ति?

    “Sādhu, bhikkhave. Mayāpi kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, neva diṭṭhaṁ na sutaṁ: ‘ayaṁ puriso surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ pahāya surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭiviratoti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’ti. Api ca khvassa tatheva pāpakammaṁ pavedenti: ‘ayaṁ puriso surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ anuyutto itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vā jīvitā voropesi; ayaṁ puriso surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ anuyutto gāmā vā araññā vā adinnaṁ theyyasaṅkhātaṁ ādiyi; ayaṁ puriso surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ anuyutto paritthīsu parakumārīsu cārittaṁ āpajji; ayaṁ puriso surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ anuyutto gahapatissa vā gahapatiputtassa vā musāvādena atthaṁ pabhañjīti. Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānahetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karonti. Api nu tumhehi evarūpaṁ diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā’”ti?

    “Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing. Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed: ‘While under the influence of alcoholic drinks that cause negligence, this person murdered a woman or a man. Or they stole something from a village or wilderness. Or they had sexual relations with women or maidens under someone else’s protection. Or they ruined a householder or householder’s child by lying.’ Then the kings have them arrested for being under the influence of alcoholic drinks that cause negligence, and execute, imprison, or banish them, or do what the case requires. Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”

    “दिट्ठञ्च नो, भन्ते, सुतञ्च सुय्यिस्सति चा”ति।

    “Diṭṭhañca no, bhante, sutañca suyyissati cā”ti.

    “Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”

    अट्ठमं।
