Recombinant Fibroblast Growth Factor 2
A recombinant therapeutic agent which is chemically identical to or similar to endogenous fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2). Reflecting its endogenous role, therapeutic FGF-2 exhibits a wide spectrum of biological activities, including the promotion of growth and differentiation in target cells, the regulation of hormone secretion, and the promotion of angiogenesis. This agent's mitogenic effects on fibroblasts and endothelial cells indicates a potential role in therapeutic angiogenesis and wound healing. In addition, therapeutic FGF-2 may stimulate neurogenesis and protect neurons against degeneration; FGF-2 supplementation via gene transfer may reduce neuronal degeneration in experimental animal models.
