Honor
අථ ඛෝ ආයස්මතෝ සාරිපුත්තස්ස රහෝගතස්ස පටිසල්ලීනස්ස ඒවං චේතසෝ පරිවිතක්කෝ උදපාදි: “කිං නු ඛෝ, භික්ඛු, සක්කත්වා ගරුං කත්වා උපනිස්සාය විහරන්තෝ අකුසලං පජහේය්‍ය, කුසලං භාවේය්‍යා”ති?
Then as Venerable Sāriputta was in private retreat this thought came to his mind, “What should a bhikkhu honor and respect and rely on, to give up the unskillful and develop the skillful?”
අථ ඛෝ ආයස්මතෝ සාරිපුත්තස්ස ඒතදහෝසි: “සත්ථාරං ඛෝ, භික්ඛු, සක්කත්වා ගරුං කත්වා උපනිස්සාය විහරන්තෝ අකුසලං පජහේය්‍ය, කුසලං භාවේය්‍ය. ධම්මං ඛෝ, භික්ඛු …පේ… සඞ්ඝං ඛෝ, භික්ඛු …පේ… සික්ඛං ඛෝ, භික්ඛු …පේ… සමාධිං ඛෝ, භික්ඛු …පේ… අප්පමාදං ඛෝ, භික්ඛු …පේ… පටිසන්ථාරං ඛෝ, භික්ඛු සක්කත්වා ගරුං කත්වා උපනිස්සාය විහරන්තෝ අකුසලං පජහේය්‍ය, කුසලං භාවේය්‍යා”ති.
Then he thought, “A bhikkhu should honor and respect and rely on the Teacher … the teaching … the Saṅgha … the training … immersion … diligence … A bhikkhu should honor and respect and rely on hospitality, to give up the unskillful and develop the skillful.”
අථ ඛෝ ආයස්මතෝ සාරිපුත්තස්ස ඒතදහෝසි: “ඉමේ ඛෝ මේ ධම්මා පරිසුද්ධා පරියෝදාතා, යන්නූනාහං ඉමේ ධම්මේ ගන්ත්වා භගවතෝ ආරෝචේය්‍යං. ඒවං මේ ඉමේ ධම්මා පරිසුද්ධා චේව භවිස්සන්ති පරිසුද්ධසඞ්ඛාතතරා ච. සේය්‍යථාපි නාම පුරිසෝ සුවණ්ණනික්ඛං අධිගච්ඡේය්‍ය පරිසුද්ධං පරියෝදාතං. තස්ස ඒවමස්ස: ‘අයං ඛෝ මේ සුවණ්ණනික්ඛෝ පරිසුද්ධෝ පරියෝදාතෝ, යන්නූනාහං ඉමං සුවණ්ණනික්ඛං ගන්ත්වා කම්මාරානං දස්සේය්‍යං. ඒවං මේ අයං සුවණ්ණනික්ඛෝ සකම්මාරගතෝ පරිසුද්ධෝ චේව භවිස්සති පරිසුද්ධසඞ්ඛාතතරෝ ච. ඒවමේවං මේ ඉමේ ධම්මා පරිසුද්ධා පරියෝදාතා, යන්නූනාහං ඉමේ ධම්මේ ගන්ත්වා භගවතෝ ආරෝචේය්‍යං. ඒවං මේ ඉමේ ධම්මා පරිසුද්ධා චේව භවිස්සන්ති පරිසුද්ධසඞ්ඛාතතරා චා(අ)”ති.
Then he thought, “These qualities are pure and bright in me. Why don’t I go and tell them to the Buddha? Then these qualities will not only be purified in me, but will be better known as purified. Suppose a man were to acquire a gold coin, pure and bright. They’d think, ‘My gold coin is pure and bright. Why don’t I take it to show the smiths? Then it will not only be purified, but will be better known as purified.’ In the same way, these qualities are pure and bright in me. Why don’t I go and tell them to the Buddha? Then these qualities will not only be purified in me, but will be better known as purified.”
අථ ඛෝ ආයස්මා සාරිපුත්තෝ සායන්හසමයං පටිසල්ලානා වුට්ඨිතෝ යේන භගවා තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා භගවන්තං අභිවාදේත්වා ඒකමන්තං නිසීදි. ඒකමන්තං නිසින්නෝ ඛෝ ආයස්මා සාරිපුත්තෝ භගවන්තං ඒතදවෝච:
Then in the late afternoon, Sāriputta came out of retreat and went to the Buddha. He bowed, sat down to one side, and told the Buddha of his thoughts while on retreat.
“ඉධ මය්හං, භන්තේ, රහෝගතස්ස පටිසල්ලීනස්ස ඒවං චේතසෝ පරිවිතක්කෝ උදපාදි: ‘කිං නු ඛෝ භික්ඛු සක්කත්වා ගරුං කත්වා උපනිස්සාය විහරන්තෝ අකුසලං පජහේය්‍ය, කුසලං භාවේය්‍යා(අ)ති? අථ ඛෝ තස්ස මය්හං, භන්තේ, ඒතදහෝසි: ‘සත්ථාරං ඛෝ භික්ඛු සක්කත්වා ගරුං කත්වා උපනිස්සාය විහරන්තෝ අකුසලං පජහේය්‍ය, කුසලං භාවේය්‍ය. ධම්මං ඛෝ භික්ඛු …පේ… පටිසන්ථාරං ඛෝ භික්ඛු සක්කත්වා …පේ… කුසලං භාවේය්‍යා(අ)ති. අථ ඛෝ තස්ස මය්හං, භන්තේ, ඒතදහෝසි: ‘ඉමේ ඛෝ මේ ධම්මා පරිසුද්ධා පරියෝදාතා, යන්නූනාහං ඉමේ ධම්මේ ගන්ත්වා භගවතෝ ආරෝචේය්‍යං. ඒවං මේ ඉමේ ධම්මා පරිසුද්ධා චේව භවිස්සන්ති පරිසුද්ධසඞ්ඛාතතරා ච. සේය්‍යථාපි නාම පුරිසෝ සුවණ්ණනික්ඛං අධිගච්ඡේය්‍ය පරිසුද්ධං පරියෝදාතං. තස්ස ඒවමස්ස—අයං ඛෝ මේ සුවණ්ණනික්ඛෝ පරිසුද්ධෝ පරියෝදාතෝ, යන්නූනාහං ඉමං සුවණ්ණනික්ඛං ගන්ත්වා කම්මාරානං දස්සේය්‍යං. ඒවං මේ අයං සුවණ්ණනික්ඛෝ සකම්මාරගතෝ පරිසුද්ධෝ චේව භවිස්සති පරිසුද්ධසඞ්ඛාතතරෝ ච. ඒවමේවං මේ ඉමේ ධම්මා පරිසුද්ධා පරියෝදාතා, යන්නූනාහං ඉමේ ධම්මේ ගන්ත්වා භගවතෝ ආරෝචේය්‍යං. ඒවං මේ ඉමේ ධම්මා පරිසුද්ධා චේව භවිස්සන්ති පරිසුද්ධසඞ්ඛාතතරා චා(අ)”ති.
“සාධු සාධු, සාරිපුත්ත. සත්ථාරං ඛෝ, සාරිපුත්ත, භික්ඛු සක්කත්වා ගරුං කත්වා උපනිස්සාය විහරන්තෝ අකුසලං පජහේය්‍ය, කුසලං භාවේය්‍ය. ධම්මං ඛෝ, සාරිපුත්ත, භික්ඛු සක්කත්වා ගරුං කත්වා උපනිස්සාය විහරන්තෝ අකුසලං පජහේය්‍ය, කුසලං භාවේය්‍ය. සඞ්ඝං ඛෝ …පේ… සික්ඛං ඛෝ … සමාධිං ඛෝ … අප්පමාදං ඛෝ … පටිසන්ථාරං ඛෝ, සාරිපුත්ත, භික්ඛු සක්කත්වා ගරුං කත්වා උපනිස්සාය විහරන්තෝ අකුසලං පජහේය්‍ය, කුසලං භාවේය්‍යා”ති.
“Good, good, Sāriputta! A bhikkhu should honor and respect and rely on the Teacher, to give up the unskillful and develop the skillful. A bhikkhu should honor and respect and rely on the teaching … the Saṅgha … the training … immersion … diligence … A bhikkhu should honor and respect and rely on hospitality, to give up the unskillful and develop the skillful.”
ඒවං වුත්තේ, ආයස්මා සාරිපුත්තෝ භගවන්තං ඒතදවෝච:
When he said this, Venerable Sāriputta said to the Buddha:
“ඉමස්ස ඛෝ අහං, භන්තේ, භගවතා සඞ්ඛිත්තේන භාසිතස්ස ඒවං විත්ථාරේන අත්ථං ආජානාමි. සෝ වත, භන්තේ, භික්ඛු සත්ථරි අගාරවෝ ධම්මේ සගාරවෝ භවිස්සතීති නේතං ඨානං විජ්ජති. යෝ සෝ, භන්තේ, භික්ඛු සත්ථරි අගාරවෝ ධම්මේපි සෝ අගාරවෝ.
“Sir, this is how I understand the detailed meaning of the Buddha’s brief statement. It’s quite impossible for a bhikkhu who doesn’t respect the Teacher to respect the teaching. A bhikkhu who disrespects the Teacher disrespects the teaching.
සෝ වත, භන්තේ, භික්ඛු සත්ථරි අගාරවෝ ධම්මේ අගාරවෝ සඞ්ඝේ සගාරවෝ භවිස්සතීති නේතං ඨානං විජ්ජති. යෝ සෝ, භන්තේ, භික්ඛු සත්ථරි අගාරවෝ ධම්මේ අගාරවෝ සඞ්ඝේපි සෝ අගාරවෝ.
It’s quite impossible for a bhikkhu who doesn’t respect the Teacher and the teaching to respect the Saṅgha. A bhikkhu who disrespects the Teacher and the teaching disrespects the Saṅgha.
සෝ වත, භන්තේ, භික්ඛු සත්ථරි අගාරවෝ ධම්මේ අගාරවෝ සඞ්ඝේ අගාරවෝ සික්ඛාය සගාරවෝ භවිස්සතීති නේතං ඨානං විජ්ජති. යෝ සෝ, භන්තේ, භික්ඛු සත්ථරි අගාරවෝ ධම්මේ අගාරවෝ සඞ්ඝේ අගාරවෝ සික්ඛායපි සෝ අගාරවෝ.
It’s quite impossible for a bhikkhu who doesn’t respect the Teacher, the teaching, and the Saṅgha to respect the training. A bhikkhu who disrespects the Teacher, the teaching, and the Saṅgha disrespects the training.
සෝ වත, භන්තේ, භික්ඛු සත්ථරි අගාරවෝ ධම්මේ අගාරවෝ සඞ්ඝේ අගාරවෝ සික්ඛාය අගාරවෝ සමාධිස්මිං සගාරවෝ භවිස්සතීති නේතං ඨානං විජ්ජති. යෝ සෝ, භන්තේ, භික්ඛු සත්ථරි අගාරවෝ ධම්මේ අගාරවෝ සඞ්ඝේ අගාරවෝ සික්ඛාය අගාරවෝ සමාධිස්මිම්පි සෝ අගාරවෝ.
It’s quite impossible for a bhikkhu who doesn’t respect the Teacher, the teaching, the Saṅgha, and the training to respect immersion. A bhikkhu who disrespects the Teacher, the teaching, the Saṅgha, and the training disrespects immersion.
සෝ වත, භන්තේ, භික්ඛු සත්ථරි අගාරවෝ ධම්මේ අගාරවෝ සඞ්ඝේ අගාරවෝ සික්ඛාය අගාරවෝ සමාධිස්මිං අගාරවෝ අප්පමාදේ සගාරවෝ භවිස්සතීති නේතං ඨානං විජ්ජති. යෝ සෝ, භන්තේ, භික්ඛු සත්ථරි අගාරවෝ ධම්මේ අගාරවෝ සඞ්ඝේ අගාරවෝ සික්ඛාය අගාරවෝ සමාධිස්මිං අගාරවෝ අප්පමාදේපි සෝ අගාරවෝ.
It’s quite impossible for a bhikkhu who doesn’t respect the Teacher, the teaching, the Saṅgha, the training, and immersion to respect diligence. A bhikkhu who disrespects the Teacher, the teaching, the Saṅgha, the training, and immersion disrespects diligence.
සෝ වත, භන්තේ, භික්ඛු සත්ථරි අගාරවෝ ධම්මේ අගාරවෝ සඞ්ඝේ අගාරවෝ සික්ඛාය අගාරවෝ සමාධිස්මිං අගාරවෝ අප්පමාදේ අගාරවෝ පටිසන්ථාරේ සගාරවෝ භවිස්සතීති නේතං ඨානං විජ්ජති. යෝ සෝ, භන්තේ, භික්ඛු සත්ථරි අගාරවෝ …පේ… අප්පමාදේ අගාරවෝ පටිසන්ථාරේපි සෝ අගාරවෝ.

“සාධු සාධු, සාරිපුත්ත. සාධු ඛෝ ත්වං, සාරිපුත්ත, ඉමස්ස මයා සඞ්ඛිත්තේන භාසිතස්ස ඒවං විත්ථාරේන අත්ථං ආජානාසි.
