Samaṇasukhumālasutta
An Exquisite Ascetic of Ascetics
“पञ्चहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु समणेसु समणसुखुमालो होति।
“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu samaṇesu samaṇasukhumālo hoti.
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with five qualities is an exquisite ascetic of ascetics.
कतमेहि पञ्चहि?
Katamehi pañcahi?
What five?
इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु याचितोव बहुलं चीवरं परिभुञ्जति, अप्पं अयाचितो; याचितोव बहुलं पिण्डपातं परिभुञ्जति, अप्पं अयाचितो; याचितोव बहुलं सेनासनं परिभुञ्जति, अप्पं अयाचितो; याचितोव बहुलं गिलानपच्चयभेसज्जपरिक्खारं परिभुञ्जति, अप्पं अयाचितो।
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yācitova bahulaṁ cīvaraṁ paribhuñjati, appaṁ ayācito; yācitova bahulaṁ piṇḍapātaṁ paribhuñjati, appaṁ ayācito; yācitova bahulaṁ senāsanaṁ paribhuñjati, appaṁ ayācito; yācitova bahulaṁ gilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhāraṁ paribhuñjati, appaṁ ayācito.
It’s when a bhikkhu usually uses only what they’ve been invited to accept—robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick—rarely using them without invitation.
येहि खो पन सब्रह्मचारीहि सद्धिं विहरति, त्यस्स मनापेनेव बहुलं कायकम्मेन समुदाचरन्ति, अप्पं अमनापेन; मनापेनेव बहुलं वचीकम्मेन समुदाचरन्ति, अप्पं अमनापेन; मनापेनेव बहुलं मनोकम्मेन समुदाचरन्ति, अप्पं अमनापेन; मनापंयेव उपहारं उपहरन्ति, अप्पं अमनापं।
Yehi kho pana sabrahmacārīhi saddhiṁ viharati, tyassa1 manāpeneva bahulaṁ kāyakammena samudācaranti, appaṁ amanāpena; manāpeneva bahulaṁ vacīkammena samudācaranti, appaṁ amanāpena; manāpeneva bahulaṁ manokammena samudācaranti, appaṁ amanāpena; manāpaṁyeva upahāraṁ upaharanti, appaṁ amanāpaṁ.
When living with other spiritual practitioners, they usually treat them agreeably by way of body, speech, and mind, and rarely disagreeably. And they usually present them with agreeable things, rarely with disagreeable ones.
यानि खो पन तानि वेदयितानि पित्तसमुट्ठानानि वा सेम्हसमुट्ठानानि वा वातसमुट्ठानानि वा सन्निपातिकानि वा उतुपरिणामजानि वा विसमपरिहारजानि वा ओपक्कमिकानि वा कम्मविपाकजानि वा, तानिस्स न बहुदेव उप्पज्जन्ति।
Yāni kho pana tāni vedayitāni pittasamuṭṭhānāni vā semhasamuṭṭhānāni vā vātasamuṭṭhānāni vā sannipātikāni vā utupariṇāmajāni vā visamaparihārajāni vā opakkamikāni vā kammavipākajāni vā, tānissa na bahudeva uppajjanti.
They’re healthy, so the various unpleasant feelings—stemming from disorders of bile, phlegm, wind, or their conjunction; or caused by change in weather, by not taking care of themselves, by overexertion, or as the result of past deeds—usually don’t come up.
अप्पाबाधो होति, चतुन्नं झानानं आभिचेतसिकानं दिट्ठधम्मसुखविहारानं निकामलाभी होति अकिच्छलाभी अकसिरलाभी,
Appābādho hoti, catunnaṁ jhānānaṁ ābhicetasikānaṁ diṭṭhadhammasukhavihārānaṁ nikāmalābhī hoti akicchalābhī akasiralābhī,
They get the four jhānas—blissful meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.
आसवानं खया अनासवं चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरति।
āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati.
And they realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु समणेसु समणसुखुमालो होति।
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu samaṇesu samaṇasukhumālo hoti.
A bhikkhu with these five qualities is an exquisite ascetic of ascetics.
यञ्हि तं, भिक्खवे, सम्मा वदमानो वदेय्य: ‘समणेसु समणसुखुमालोऽति, ममेव तं, भिक्खवे, सम्मा वदमानो वदेय्य: ‘समणेसु समणसुखुमालोऽति। अहञ्हि, भिक्खवे, याचितोव बहुलं चीवरं परिभुञ्जामि, अप्पं अयाचितो; याचितोव बहुलं पिण्डपातं परिभुञ्जामि, अप्पं अयाचितो; याचितोव बहुलं सेनासनं परिभुञ्जामि, अप्पं अयाचितो; याचितोव बहुलं गिलानपच्चयभेसज्जपरिक्खारं परिभुञ्जामि, अप्पं अयाचितो। येहि खो पन भिक्खूहि सद्धिं विहरामि, ते मं मनापेनेव बहुलं कायकम्मेन समुदाचरन्ति, अप्पं अमनापेन; मनापेनेव बहुलं वचीकम्मेन समुदाचरन्ति, अप्पं अमनापेन; मनापेनेव बहुलं मनोकम्मेन समुदाचरन्ति, अप्पं अमनापेन; मनापंयेव उपहारं उपहरन्ति, अप्पं अमनापं। यानि खो पन तानि वेदयितानि—पित्तसमुट्ठानानि वा सेम्हसमुट्ठानानि वा वातसमुट्ठानानि वा सन्निपातिकानि वा उतुपरिणामजानि वा विसमपरिहारजानि वा ओपक्कमिकानि वा कम्मविपाकजानि वा—तानि मे न बहुदेव उप्पज्जन्ति। अप्पाबाधोहमस्मि। चतुन्नं खो पनस्मि झानानं आभिचेतसिकानं दिट्ठधम्मसुखविहारानं निकामलाभी अकिच्छलाभी अकसिरलाभी, आसवानं खया …पे… सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरामि। यञ्हि तं, भिक्खवे, सम्मा वदमानो वदेय्य: ‘समणेसु समणसुखुमालोऽति, ममेव तं, भिक्खवे, सम्मा वदमानो वदेय्य: ‘समणेसु समणसुखुमालोऽ”ति।
Yañhi taṁ, bhikkhave, sammā vadamāno vadeyya: ‘samaṇesu samaṇasukhumālo’ti, mameva taṁ, bhikkhave, sammā2 vadamāno vadeyya: ‘samaṇesu samaṇasukhumālo’ti. Ahañhi, bhikkhave, yācitova bahulaṁ cīvaraṁ paribhuñjāmi, appaṁ ayācito; yācitova bahulaṁ piṇḍapātaṁ paribhuñjāmi, appaṁ ayācito; yācitova bahulaṁ senāsanaṁ paribhuñjāmi, appaṁ ayācito; yācitova bahulaṁ gilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhāraṁ paribhuñjāmi, appaṁ ayācito. Yañhi taṁ, bhikkhave, sammā vadamāno vadeyya: ‘samaṇesu samaṇasukhumālo’ti, mameva taṁ, bhikkhave, sammā vadamāno vadeyya: ‘samaṇesu samaṇasukhumālo’”ti.
And if anyone should be rightly called an exquisite ascetic of ascetics, it’s me. For I usually use only what I’ve been invited to accept. When living with other spiritual practitioners, I usually treat them agreeably. And I usually present them with agreeable things. I’m healthy. I get the four jhānas when I want, without trouble or difficulty. And I’ve realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. So if anyone should be rightly called an exquisite ascetic of ascetics, it’s me.”
