Who Should Have a Novice as Attendant
“पञ्चहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतेन भिक्खुना सामणेरो उपट्ठापेतब्बो। कतमेहि पञ्चहि? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु असेखेन सीलक्खन्धेन समन्नागतो होति; असेखेन समाधिक्खन्धेन … असेखेन पञ्ञाक्खन्धेन … असेखेन विमुत्तिक्खन्धेन … असेखेन विमुत्तिञाणदस्सनक्खन्धेन समन्नागतो होति। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतेन भिक्खुना सामणेरो उपट्ठापेतब्बो”ति।
“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgatena bhikkhunā sāmaṇero upaṭṭhāpetabbo. Katamehi pañcahi? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asekhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti; asekhena samādhikkhandhena … asekhena paññākkhandhena … asekhena vimuttikkhandhena … asekhena vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgatena bhikkhunā sāmaṇero upaṭṭhāpetabbo”ti.
“Bhikkhus, a novice should attend on a bhikkhu with five qualities. What five? It’s a bhikkhu who has the entire spectrum of an adept’s ethics, immersion, wisdom, freedom, and the knowledge and vision of freedom. A novice should attend on a bhikkhu with these five qualities.”
