अथ खो आयस्मा समिद्धि येनायस्मा सारिपुत्तो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मन्तं सारिपुत्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो आयस्मन्तं समिद्धिं आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो एतदवोच:
Atha kho āyasmā samiddhi yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ samiddhiṁ āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca:
Then Venerable Samiddhi went up to Venerable Sāriputta, bowed, and sat to one side. Venerable Sāriputta said to him:
“किमारम्मणा, समिद्धि, पुरिसस्स सङ्कप्पवितक्का उप्पज्जन्ती”ति?
“Kimārammaṇā, samiddhi, purisassa saṅkappavitakkā uppajjantī”ti?
“Samiddhi, based on what do thoughts arise in a person?”
“नामरूपारम्मणा, भन्ते”ति।
“Nāmarūpārammaṇā, bhante”ti.
“Based on name and form, sir.”
“ते पन, समिद्धि, क्व नानत्तं गच्छन्ती”ति?
“Te pana, samiddhi, kva nānattaṁ gacchantī”ti?
“Where do they become diversified?”
“धातूसु, भन्ते”ति।
“Dhātūsu, bhante”ti.
“In the elements.”
“ते पन, समिद्धि, किंसमुदया”ति?
“Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁsamudayā”ti?
“What is their origin?”
“फस्ससमुदया, भन्ते”ति।
“Phassasamudayā, bhante”ti.
“Contact is their origin.”
“ते पन, समिद्धि, किंसमोसरणा”ति?
“Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁsamosaraṇā”ti?
“What is their meeting place?”
“वेदनासमोसरणा, भन्ते”ति।
“Vedanāsamosaraṇā, bhante”ti.
“Feeling is their meeting place.”
“ते पन, समिद्धि, किंपमुखा”ति?
“Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁpamukhā”ti?
“What is their chief?”
“समाधिप्पमुखा, भन्ते”ति।
“Samādhippamukhā, bhante”ti.
“Immersion is their chief.”
“ते पन, समिद्धि, किंअधिपतेय्या”ति?
“Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁadhipateyyā”ti?
“What is their ruler?”
“सताधिपतेय्या, भन्ते”ति।
“Satādhipateyyā, bhante”ti.
“Mindfulness is their ruler.”
“ते पन, समिद्धि, किंउत्तरा”ति?
“Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁuttarā”ti?
“What is their overseer?”
“पञ्ञुत्तरा, भन्ते”ति।
“Paññuttarā, bhante”ti.
“Wisdom is their overseer.”
“ते पन, समिद्धि, किंसारा”ति?
“Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁsārā”ti?
“What is their core?”
“विमुत्तिसारा, भन्ते”ति।
“Vimuttisārā, bhante”ti.
“Freedom is their core.”
“ते पन, समिद्धि, किंओगधा”ति?
“Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁogadhā”ti?
“What is their culmination?”
“अमतोगधा, भन्ते”ति।
“Amatogadhā, bhante”ti.
“They culminate in the deathless.”
“‘किमारम्मणा, समिद्धि, पुरिसस्स सङ्कप्पवितक्का उप्पज्जन्तीऽति, इति पुट्ठो समानो ‘नामरूपारम्मणा, भन्तेऽति वदेसि। ‘ते पन, समिद्धि, क्व नानत्तं गच्छन्तीऽति, इति पुट्ठो समानो ‘धातूसु, भन्तेऽति वदेसि। ‘ते पन, समिद्धि, किंसमुदयाऽति, इति पुट्ठो समानो ‘फस्ससमुदया, भन्तेऽति वदेसि। ‘ते पन, समिद्धि, किंसमोसरणाऽति, इति पुट्ठो समानो ‘वेदनासमोसरणा, भन्तेऽति वदेसि। ‘ते पन, समिद्धि, किंपमुखाऽति, इति पुट्ठो समानो ‘समाधिप्पमुखा, भन्तेऽति वदेसि। ‘ते पन, समिद्धि, किंअधिपतेय्याऽति, इति पुट्ठो समानो ‘सताधिपतेय्या, भन्तेऽति वदेसि। ‘ते पन, समिद्धि, किंउत्तराऽति, इति पुट्ठो समानो ‘पञ्ञुत्तरा, भन्तेऽति वदेसि। ‘ते पन, समिद्धि, किंसाराऽति, इति पुट्ठो समानो ‘विमुत्तिसारा, भन्तेऽति वदेसि। ‘ते पन, समिद्धि, किंओगधाऽति, इति पुट्ठो समानो ‘अमतोगधा, भन्तेऽति वदेसि। साधु साधु, समिद्धि। साधु खो त्वं, समिद्धि, पुट्ठो पुट्ठो विस्सज्जेसि, तेन च मा मञ्ञी”ति।
“‘Kimārammaṇā, samiddhi, purisassa saṅkappavitakkā uppajjantī’ti, iti puṭṭho samāno ‘nāmarūpārammaṇā, bhante’ti vadesi. ‘Te pana, samiddhi, kva nānattaṁ gacchantī’ti, iti puṭṭho samāno ‘dhātūsu, bhante’ti vadesi. ‘Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁsamudayā’ti, iti puṭṭho samāno ‘phassasamudayā, bhante’ti vadesi. ‘Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁsamosaraṇā’ti, iti puṭṭho samāno ‘vedanāsamosaraṇā, bhante’ti vadesi. ‘Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁpamukhā’ti, iti puṭṭho samāno ‘samādhippamukhā, bhante’ti vadesi. ‘Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁadhipateyyā’ti, iti puṭṭho samāno ‘satādhipateyyā, bhante’ti vadesi. ‘Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁuttarā’ti, iti puṭṭho samāno ‘paññuttarā, bhante’ti vadesi. ‘Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁsārā’ti, iti puṭṭho samāno ‘vimuttisārā, bhante’ti vadesi. ‘Te pana, samiddhi, kiṁogadhā’ti, iti puṭṭho samāno ‘amatogadhā, bhante’ti vadesi. Sādhu sādhu, samiddhi. Sādhu kho tvaṁ, samiddhi, puṭṭho1 puṭṭho vissajjesi, tena ca mā maññī”ti.
“Samiddhi, when you were asked what is the basis on which thoughts arise in a person, you answered ‘name and form’. When you were asked … what is their culmination, you answered ‘the deathless’. Good, good, Samiddhi! It’s good that you answered each question. But don’t get conceited because of that.”
