Restraint
“चत्तारिमानि, भिक्खवे, पधानानि। कतमानि चत्तारि? संवरप्पधानं, पहानप्पधानं, भावनाप्पधानं, अनुरक्खणाप्पधानं।
“Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, padhānāni. Katamāni cattāri? Saṁvarappadhānaṁ, pahānappadhānaṁ, bhāvanāppadhānaṁ, anurakkhaṇāppadhānaṁ.
“Bhikkhus, there are these four efforts. What four? The efforts to restrain, to give up, to develop, and to preserve.
कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, संवरप्पधानं? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु चक्खुना रूपं दिस्वा न निमित्तग्गाही होति नानुब्यञ्जनग्गाही। यत्वाधिकरणमेनं चक्खुन्द्रियं असंवुतं विहरन्तं अभिज्झादोमनस्सा पापका अकुसला धम्मा अन्वास्सवेय्युं, तस्स संवराय पटिपज्जति, रक्खति चक्खुन्द्रियं, चक्खुन्द्रिये संवरं आपज्जति। सोतेन सद्दं सुत्वा … घानेन गन्धं घायित्वा … जिव्हाय रसं सायित्वा … कायेन फोट्ठब्बं फुसित्वा … मनसा धम्मं विञ्ञाय न निमित्तग्गाही होति नानुब्यञ्जनग्गाही, यत्वाधिकरणमेनं मनिन्द्रियं असंवुतं विहरन्तं अभिज्झादोमनस्सा पापका अकुसला धम्मा अन्वास्सवेय्युं, तस्स संवराय पटिपज्जति, रक्खति मनिन्द्रियं, मनिन्द्रिये संवरं आपज्जति। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, संवरप्पधानं।
Katamañca, bhikkhave, saṁvarappadhānaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhunā rūpaṁ disvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī. Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṁ cakkhundriyaṁ asaṁvutaṁ viharantaṁ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṁ, tassa saṁvarāya paṭipajjati, rakkhati cakkhundriyaṁ, cakkhundriye saṁvaraṁ āpajjati. Sotena saddaṁ sutvā … ghānena gandhaṁ ghāyitvā … jivhāya rasaṁ sāyitvā … kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṁ phusitvā … manasā dhammaṁ viññāya na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī, yatvādhikaraṇamenaṁ manindriyaṁ asaṁvutaṁ viharantaṁ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṁ, tassa saṁvarāya paṭipajjati, rakkhati manindriyaṁ, manindriye saṁvaraṁ āpajjati. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, saṁvarappadhānaṁ.
And what, bhikkhus, is the effort to restrain? When a bhikkhu sees a sight with their eyes, they don’t get caught up in the features and details. If the faculty of sight were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, they practice restraint, protecting the faculty of sight, and achieving its restraint. When they hear a sound with their ears … When they smell an odor with their nose … When they taste a flavor with their tongue … When they feel a touch with their body … When they know a thought with their mind, they don’t get caught up in the features and details. If the faculty of mind were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, they practice restraint, protecting the faculty of mind, and achieving its restraint. This is called the effort to restrain.
कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, पहानप्पधानं? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु उप्पन्नं कामवितक्कं नाधिवासेति पजहति विनोदेति ब्यन्तीकरोति अनभावं गमेति; उप्पन्नं ब्यापादवितक्कं …पे… उप्पन्नं विहिंसावितक्कं …पे… उप्पन्नुप्पन्ने पापके अकुसले धम्मे नाधिवासेति पजहति विनोदेति ब्यन्तीकरोति अनभावं गमेति। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, पहानप्पधानं।
Katamañca, bhikkhave, pahānappadhānaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu uppannaṁ kāmavitakkaṁ nādhivāseti pajahati vinodeti byantīkaroti anabhāvaṁ gameti; uppannaṁ byāpādavitakkaṁ …pe… uppannaṁ vihiṁsāvitakkaṁ …pe… uppannuppanne pāpake akusale dhamme nādhivāseti pajahati vinodeti byantīkaroti anabhāvaṁ gameti. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, pahānappadhānaṁ.
And what, bhikkhus, is the effort to give up? It’s when a bhikkhu doesn’t tolerate a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought that’s arisen, but gives it up, gets rid of it, eliminates it, and obliterates it. They don’t tolerate any bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen, but give them up, get rid of them, eliminate them, and obliterate them. This is called the effort to give up.
कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, भावनाप्पधानं? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सतिसम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं, धम्मविचयसम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति … वीरियसम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति … पीतिसम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति … पस्सद्धिसम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति … समाधिसम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति … उपेक्खासम्बोज्झङ्गं भावेति विवेकनिस्सितं विरागनिस्सितं निरोधनिस्सितं वोस्सग्गपरिणामिं। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, भावनाप्पधानं।
Katamañca, bhikkhave, bhāvanāppadhānaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu satisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ, dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti … vīriyasambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti … pītisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti … passaddhisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti … samādhisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti … upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhāvanāppadhānaṁ.
And what, bhikkhus, is the effort to develop? It’s when a bhikkhu develops the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. This is called the effort to develop.
कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, अनुरक्खणाप्पधानं? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु उप्पन्नं भद्दकं समाधिनिमित्तं अनुरक्खति अट्ठिकसञ्ञं पुळवकसञ्ञं विनीलकसञ्ञं विच्छिद्दकसञ्ञं उद्धुमातकसञ्ञं। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, अनुरक्खणाप्पधानं।
Katamañca, bhikkhave, anurakkhaṇāppadhānaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu uppannaṁ bhaddakaṁ samādhinimittaṁ anurakkhati aṭṭhikasaññaṁ puḷavakasaññaṁ vinīlakasaññaṁ vicchiddakasaññaṁ uddhumātakasaññaṁ. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, anurakkhaṇāppadhānaṁ.
And what, bhikkhus, is the effort to preserve? It’s when a bhikkhu preserves a meditation subject that’s a fine foundation of immersion: the perception of a skeleton, a worm-infested corpse, a livid corpse, a split open corpse, or a bloated corpse. This is called the effort to preserve.
इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारि पधानानीति।
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri padhānānīti.
These are the four efforts.
संवरो च पहानञ्च, भावना अनुरक्खणा; एते पधाना चत्तारो, देसितादिच्चबन्धुना; येहि भिक्खु इधातापी, खयं दुक्खस्स पापुणे”ति।
Saṁvaro ca pahānañca, bhāvanā anurakkhaṇā; Ete padhānā cattāro, desitādiccabandhunā; Yehi bhikkhu idhātāpī, khayaṁ dukkhassa pāpuṇe”ti.
Restraint and giving up, development and preservation: these are the four efforts taught by the kinsman of the Sun. Any bhikkhu who keenly applies these may attain the ending of suffering.”
