अथ खो सङ्गारवो ब्राह्मणो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो सङ्गारवो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:
Atha kho saṅgāravo brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho saṅgāravo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Saṅgārava the brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
“किं नु खो, भो गोतम, ओरिमं तीरं, किं पारिमं तीरन्”ति?
“kiṁ nu kho, bho gotama, orimaṁ tīraṁ, kiṁ pārimaṁ tīran”ti?
“Master Gotama, what is the near shore? And what is the far shore?”
“मिच्छादिट्ठि खो, ब्राह्मण, ओरिमं तीरं, सम्मादिट्ठि पारिमं तीरं; मिच्छासङ्कप्पो ओरिमं तीरं, सम्मासङ्कप्पो पारिमं तीरं; मिच्छावाचा ओरिमं तीरं, सम्मावाचा पारिमं तीरं; मिच्छाकम्मन्तो ओरिमं तीरं, सम्माकम्मन्तो पारिमं तीरं; मिच्छाआजीवो ओरिमं तीरं, सम्माआजीवो पारिमं तीरं; मिच्छावायामो ओरिमं तीरं, सम्मावायामो पारिमं तीरं; मिच्छासति ओरिमं तीरं, सम्मासति पारिमं तीरं; मिच्छासमाधि ओरिमं तीरं, सम्मासमाधि पारिमं तीरं; मिच्छाञाणं ओरिमं तीरं, सम्माञाणं पारिमं तीरं; मिच्छाविमुत्ति ओरिमं तीरं, सम्माविमुत्ति पारिमं तीरन्ति। इदं खो, ब्राह्मण, ओरिमं तीरं, इदं पारिमं तीरन्ति।
“Micchādiṭṭhi kho, brāhmaṇa, orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammādiṭṭhi pārimaṁ tīraṁ; micchāsaṅkappo orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammāsaṅkappo pārimaṁ tīraṁ; micchāvācā orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammāvācā pārimaṁ tīraṁ; micchākammanto orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammākammanto pārimaṁ tīraṁ; micchāājīvo orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammāājīvo pārimaṁ tīraṁ; micchāvāyāmo orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammāvāyāmo pārimaṁ tīraṁ; micchāsati orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammāsati pārimaṁ tīraṁ; micchāsamādhi orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammāsamādhi pārimaṁ tīraṁ; micchāñāṇaṁ orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammāñāṇaṁ pārimaṁ tīraṁ; micchāvimutti orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammāvimutti pārimaṁ tīranti. Idaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, orimaṁ tīraṁ, idaṁ pārimaṁ tīranti.
“Wrong view is the near shore, brahmin, and right view is the far shore. Wrong thought is the near shore, and right thought is the far shore. Wrong speech is the near shore, and right speech is the far shore. Wrong action is the near shore, and right action is the far shore. Wrong livelihood is the near shore, and right livelihood is the far shore. Wrong effort is the near shore, and right effort is the far shore. Wrong mindfulness is the near shore, and right mindfulness is the far shore. Wrong immersion is the near shore, and right immersion is the far shore. Wrong knowledge is the near shore, and right knowledge is the far shore. Wrong freedom is the near shore, and right freedom is the far shore. This is the near shore, and this is the far shore.
अप्पका ते मनुस्सेसु, ये जना पारगामिनो; अथायं इतरा पजा, तीरमेवानुधावति।
Appakā te manussesu, ye janā pāragāmino; Athāyaṁ itarā pajā, tīramevānudhāvati.
Few are those among humans who cross to the far shore. The rest just run around on the near shore.
ये च खो सम्मदक्खाते, धम्मे धम्मानुवत्तिनो; ते जना पारमेस्सन्ति, मच्चुधेय्यं सुदुत्तरं।
Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte, dhamme dhammānuvattino; Te janā pāramessanti, maccudheyyaṁ suduttaraṁ.
When the teaching is well explained, those who practice accordingly are the ones who will cross over Death’s domain so hard to pass.
कण्हं धम्मं विप्पहाय, सुक्कं भावेथ पण्डितो; ओका अनोकमागम्म, विवेके यत्थ दूरमं।
Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya, Sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito; Okā anokamāgamma, Viveke yattha dūramaṁ.
Rid of dark qualities, an astute person should develop the bright. Leaving home behind for the seclusion so hard to enjoy,
तत्राभिरतिमिच्छेय्य, हित्वा कामे अकिञ्चनो; परियोदपेय्य अत्तानं, चित्तक्लेसेहि पण्डितो।
Tatrābhiratimiccheyya, hitvā kāme akiñcano; Pariyodapeyya attānaṁ, cittaklesehi paṇḍito.
find delight there, having left behind sensual pleasures. With no possessions, an astute person would cleanse themselves of mental corruptions.
येसं सम्बोधियङ्गेसु, सम्मा चित्तं सुभावितं; आदानपटिनिस्सग्गे, अनुपादाय ये रता; खीणासवा जुतिमन्तो, ते लोके परिनिब्बुता”ति।
Yesaṁ sambodhiyaṅgesu, sammā cittaṁ subhāvitaṁ; Ādānapaṭinissagge, anupādāya ye ratā; Khīṇāsavā jutimanto, te loke parinibbutā”ti.
Those whose minds are rightly developed in the awakening factors; who, letting go of attachments, delight in not grasping: with defilements ended, brilliant, they in this world are quenched.”
