A Teaching in Brief
अथ खो अञ्ञतरो भिक्खु येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि …पे… एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो सो भिक्खु भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “साधु मे, भन्ते, भगवा सङ्खित्तेन धम्मं देसेतु, यमहं भगवतो धम्मं सुत्वा एको वूपकट्ठो अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरेय्यन्”ति।
Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saṅkhittena dhammaṁ desetu, yamahaṁ bhagavato dhammaṁ sutvā eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto vihareyyan”ti.
Then a bhikkhu went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.”
“एवमेवं पनिधेकच्चे मोघपुरिसा ममञ्ञेव अज्झेसन्ति। धम्मे च भासिते ममञ्ञेव अनुबन्धितब्बं मञ्ञन्ती”ति।
“Evamevaṁ panidhekacce moghapurisā mamaññeva ajjhesanti. Dhamme ca bhāsite mamaññeva anubandhitabbaṁ maññantī”ti.
“This is exactly how some foolish people ask me for something. But when the teaching has been explained they think only of following me around.”
“देसेतु मे, भन्ते, भगवा सङ्खित्तेन धम्मं, देसेतु सुगतो सङ्खित्तेन धम्मं। अप्पेव नामाहं भगवतो भासितस्स अत्थं आजानेय्यं, अप्पेव नामाहं भगवतो भासितस्स दायादो अस्सन्”ति।
“Desetu me, bhante, bhagavā saṅkhittena dhammaṁ, desetu sugato saṅkhittena dhammaṁ. Appeva nāmāhaṁ bhagavato bhāsitassa atthaṁ ājāneyyaṁ, appeva nāmāhaṁ bhagavato bhāsitassa dāyādo assan”ti.
“Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief! May the Holy One teach me the Dhamma in brief! Hopefully I can understand the meaning of what the Buddha says! Hopefully I can be an heir of the Buddha’s teaching!”
“तस्मातिह ते, भिक्खु, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘अज्झत्तं मे चित्तं ठितं भविस्सति सुसण्ठितं, न च उप्पन्ना पापका अकुसला धम्मा चित्तं परियादाय ठस्सन्तीऽति। एवञ्हि ते, भिक्खु, सिक्खितब्बं।
“Tasmātiha te, bhikkhu, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘ajjhattaṁ me cittaṁ ṭhitaṁ bhavissati susaṇṭhitaṁ, na ca uppannā pāpakā akusalā dhammā cittaṁ pariyādāya ṭhassantī’ti. Evañhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaṁ.
“Well then, bhikkhu, you should train like this: ‘My mind will be steady and well settled internally. And bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen will not occupy my mind.’ That’s how you should train.
यतो खो ते, भिक्खु, अज्झत्तं चित्तं ठितं होति सुसण्ठितं, न च उप्पन्ना पापका अकुसला धम्मा चित्तं परियादाय तिट्ठन्ति, ततो ते, भिक्खु, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘मेत्ता मे चेतोविमुत्ति भाविता भविस्सति बहुलीकता यानीकता वत्थुकता अनुट्ठिता परिचिता सुसमारद्धाऽति। एवञ्हि ते, भिक्खु, सिक्खितब्बं।
Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ajjhattaṁ cittaṁ ṭhitaṁ hoti susaṇṭhitaṁ, na ca uppannā pāpakā akusalā dhammā cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhanti, tato te, bhikkhu, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘mettā me cetovimutti bhāvitā bhavissati bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā’ti. Evañhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaṁ.
When your mind is steady and well settled internally, and bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen don’t occupy your mind, then you should train like this: ‘I will develop the heart’s release by love. I’ll cultivate it, make it my vehicle and my basis, keep it up, consolidate it, and properly implement it.’ That’s how you should train.
यतो खो ते, भिक्खु, अयं समाधि एवं भावितो होति बहुलीकतो, ततो त्वं, भिक्खु, इमं समाधिं सवितक्कम्पि सविचारं भावेय्यासि, अवितक्कम्पि विचारमत्तं भावेय्यासि, अवितक्कम्पि अविचारं भावेय्यासि, सप्पीतिकम्पि भावेय्यासि, निप्पीतिकम्पि भावेय्यासि, सातसहगतम्पि भावेय्यासि, उपेक्खासहगतम्पि भावेय्यासि।
Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaṁ samādhi evaṁ bhāvito hoti bahulīkato, tato tvaṁ, bhikkhu, imaṁ samādhiṁ savitakkampi savicāraṁ1 bhāveyyāsi, avitakkampi vicāramattaṁ bhāveyyāsi, avitakkampi avicāraṁ bhāveyyāsi, sappītikampi bhāveyyāsi, nippītikampi bhāveyyāsi, sātasahagatampi bhāveyyāsi, upekkhāsahagatampi bhāveyyāsi.
When this immersion is well developed and cultivated in this way, you should develop it while placing the mind and keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind, but just keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind or keeping it connected. You should develop it with rapture. You should develop it without rapture. You should develop it with pleasure. You should develop it with equanimity.
यतो खो, ते भिक्खु, अयं समाधि एवं भावितो होति सुभावितो, ततो ते, भिक्खु, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘करुणा मे चेतोविमुत्ति … मुदिता मे चेतोविमुत्ति … उपेक्खा मे चेतोविमुत्ति भाविता भविस्सति बहुलीकता यानीकता वत्थुकता अनुट्ठिता परिचिता सुसमारद्धाऽति। एवञ्हि ते, भिक्खु, सिक्खितब्बं।
Yato kho, te bhikkhu, ayaṁ samādhi evaṁ bhāvito hoti subhāvito, tato te, bhikkhu, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘karuṇā me cetovimutti … muditā me cetovimutti … upekkhā me cetovimutti bhāvitā bhavissati bahulīkatā yānīkatā vatthukatā anuṭṭhitā paricitā susamāraddhā’ti. Evañhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaṁ.
When this immersion is well developed and cultivated in this way, you should train like this: ‘I will develop the heart’s release by compassion …’ … ‘I will develop the heart’s release by rejoicing …’ … ‘I will develop the heart’s release by equanimity. I’ll cultivate it, make it my vehicle and my basis, keep it up, consolidate it, and properly implement it.’ That’s how you should train.
यतो खो ते, भिक्खु, अयं समाधि एवं भावितो होति सुभावितो, ततो त्वं, भिक्खु, इमं समाधिं सवितक्कसविचारम्पि भावेय्यासि, अवितक्कविचारमत्तम्पि भावेय्यासि, अवितक्कअविचारम्पि भावेय्यासि, सप्पीतिकम्पि भावेय्यासि, निप्पीतिकम्पि भावेय्यासि, सातसहगतम्पि भावेय्यासि, उपेक्खासहगतम्पि भावेय्यासि।

When this immersion is well developed and cultivated in this way, you should develop it while placing the mind and keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind, but just keeping it connected. You should develop it without placing the mind or keeping it connected. You should develop it with rapture. You should develop it without rapture. You should develop it with pleasure. You should develop it with equanimity.
यतो खो ते, भिक्खु, अयं समाधि एवं भावितो होति सुभावितो, ततो ते, भिक्खु, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘काये कायानुपस्सी विहरिस्सामि आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सन्ऽति। एवञ्हि ते, भिक्खु, सिक्खितब्बं।
Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaṁ samādhi evaṁ bhāvito hoti subhāvito, tato te, bhikkhu, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘kāye kāyānupassī viharissāmi ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassan’ti. Evañhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaṁ.
When this immersion is well developed and cultivated in this way, you should train like this: ‘I’ll meditate observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.’ That’s how you should train.
यतो खो ते, भिक्खु, अयं समाधि एवं भावितो होति बहुलीकतो, ततो त्वं, भिक्खु, इमं समाधिं सवितक्कसविचारम्पि भावेय्यासि, अवितक्कविचारमत्तम्पि भावेय्यासि, अवितक्कअविचारम्पि भावेय्यासि, सप्पीतिकम्पि भावेय्यासि, निप्पीतिकम्पि भावेय्यासि, सातसहगतम्पि भावेय्यासि, उपेक्खासहगतम्पि भावेय्यासि।

Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaṁ samādhi evaṁ bhāvito hoti subhāvito, tato te, bhikkhu, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘vedanāsu … citte … dhammesu dhammānupassī viharissāmi ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassan’ti. Evañhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabbaṁ.
When this immersion is well developed and cultivated in this way, you should train like this: ‘I’ll meditate on an aspect of feelings …’ … ‘I’ll meditate on an aspect of the mind …’ … ‘I’ll meditate on an aspect of principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.’ That’s how you should train.

यतो खो ते, भिक्खु, अयं समाधि एवं भावितो होति सुभावितो, ततो त्वं, भिक्खु, येन येनेव गग्घसि फासुंयेव गग्घसि, यत्थ यत्थ ठस्ससि फासुंयेव ठस्ससि, यत्थ यत्थ निसीदिस्ससि फासुंयेव निसीदिस्ससि, यत्थ यत्थ सेय्यं कप्पेस्ससि फासुंयेव सेय्यं कप्पेस्ससी”ति।
Yato kho te, bhikkhu, ayaṁ samādhi evaṁ bhāvito hoti subhāvito, tato tvaṁ, bhikkhu, yena yeneva gagghasi phāsuṁyeva gagghasi, yattha yattha ṭhassasi phāsuṁyeva ṭhassasi, yattha yattha nisīdissasi phāsuṁyeva nisīdissasi, yattha yattha seyyaṁ kappessasi phāsuṁyeva seyyaṁ kappessasī”ti.
When this immersion is well developed and cultivated in this way, wherever you walk, you’ll walk comfortably. Wherever you stand, you’ll stand comfortably. Wherever you sit, you’ll sit comfortably. Wherever you lie down, you’ll lie down comfortably.”
अथ खो सो भिक्खु भगवता इमिना ओवादेन ओवदितो उट्ठायासना भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा पदक्खिणं कत्वा पक्कामि।
Atha kho so bhikkhu bhagavatā iminā ovādena ovadito uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi.
When that bhikkhu had been given this advice by the Buddha, he got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.
अथ खो सो भिक्खु एको वूपकट्ठो अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरन्तो नचिरस्सेव—यस्सत्थाय कुलपुत्ता सम्मदेव अगारस्मा अनगारियं पब्बजन्ति, तदनुत्तरं—ब्रह्मचरियपरियोसानं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहासि।
Atha kho so bhikkhu eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi.
Then that bhikkhu, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.
“खीणा जाति, वुसितं ब्रह्मचरियं, कतं करणीयं, नापरं इत्थत्ताया”ति अब्भञ्ञासि। अञ्ञतरो च पन सो भिक्खु अरहतं अहोसीति।
“Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā”ti abbhaññāsi. Aññataro ca pana so bhikkhu arahataṁ ahosīti.
He understood: “Rebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is no return to any state of existence.” And that bhikkhu became one of the perfected.
