Sappurisadānasutta
Gifts of a Good Person
“पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, सप्पुरिसदानानि। कतमानि पञ्च? सद्धाय दानं देति, सक्कच्चं दानं देति, कालेन दानं देति, अनुग्गहितचित्तो दानं देति, अत्तानञ्च परञ्च अनुपहच्च दानं देति।
“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, sappurisadānāni. Katamāni pañca? Saddhāya dānaṁ deti, sakkaccaṁ dānaṁ deti, kālena dānaṁ deti, anuggahitacitto1 dānaṁ deti, attānañca parañca anupahacca dānaṁ deti.
“There are these five gifts of a good person. What five? They give a gift out of faith. They give a gift carefully. They give a gift at the right time. They give a gift with no strings attached. They give a gift without hurting themselves or others.
सद्धाय खो पन, भिक्खवे, दानं दत्वा यत्थ यत्थ तस्स दानस्स विपाको निब्बत्तति, अड्ढो च होति महद्धनो महाभोगो, अभिरूपो च होति दस्सनीयो पासादिको परमाय वण्णपोक्खरताय समन्नागतो।
Saddhāya kho pana, bhikkhave, dānaṁ datvā yattha yattha tassa dānassa vipāko nibbattati, aḍḍho ca hoti mahaddhano mahābhogo, abhirūpo ca hoti dassanīyo pāsādiko paramāya vaṇṇapokkharatāya samannāgato.
Having given a gift out of faith, in whatever place the result of that gift manifests they become rich, affluent, and wealthy. And they’re attractive, good-looking, lovely, of surpassing beauty.
सक्कच्चं खो पन, भिक्खवे, दानं दत्वा यत्थ यत्थ तस्स दानस्स विपाको निब्बत्तति, अड्ढो च होति महद्धनो महाभोगो। येपिस्स ते होन्ति पुत्ताति वा दाराति वा दासाति वा पेस्साति वा कम्मकराति वा, तेपि सुस्सूसन्ति सोतं ओदहन्ति अञ्ञा चित्तं उपट्ठपेन्ति।
Sakkaccaṁ kho pana, bhikkhave, dānaṁ datvā yattha yattha tassa dānassa vipāko nibbattati, aḍḍho ca hoti mahaddhano mahābhogo. Yepissa te honti puttāti vā dārāti vā dāsāti vā pessāti vā kammakarāti2 vā, tepi sussūsanti sotaṁ odahanti aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhapenti.
Having given a gift carefully, in whatever place the result of that gift manifests they become rich, affluent, and wealthy. And their children, wives, bondservants, employees, and workers want to listen. They actively listen and try to understand.
कालेन खो पन, भिक्खवे, दानं दत्वा यत्थ यत्थ तस्स दानस्स विपाको निब्बत्तति, अड्ढो च होति महद्धनो महाभोगो; कालागता चस्स अत्था पचुरा होन्ति।
Kālena kho pana, bhikkhave, dānaṁ datvā yattha yattha tassa dānassa vipāko nibbattati, aḍḍho ca hoti mahaddhano mahābhogo; kālāgatā cassa atthā pacurā honti.
Having given a gift at the right time, in whatever place the result of that gift manifests they become rich, affluent, and wealthy. And when the time is right, they get all that they need.
अनुग्गहितचित्तो खो पन, भिक्खवे, दानं दत्वा यत्थ यत्थ तस्स दानस्स विपाको निब्बत्तति, अड्ढो च होति महद्धनो महाभोगो; उळारेसु च पञ्चसु कामगुणेसु भोगाय चित्तं नमति।
Anuggahitacitto kho pana, bhikkhave, dānaṁ datvā yattha yattha tassa dānassa vipāko nibbattati, aḍḍho ca hoti mahaddhano mahābhogo; uḷāresu ca pañcasu kāmaguṇesu bhogāya cittaṁ namati.
Having given a gift with no strings attached, in whatever place the result of that gift manifests they become rich, affluent, and wealthy. And their mind tends to enjoy the five refined kinds of sensual stimulation.
अत्तानञ्च परञ्च अनुपहच्च खो पन, भिक्खवे, दानं दत्वा यत्थ यत्थ तस्स दानस्स विपाको निब्बत्तति, अड्ढो च होति महद्धनो महाभोगो; न चस्स कुतोचि भोगानं उपघातो आगच्छति अग्गितो वा उदकतो वा राजतो वा चोरतो वा अप्पियतो वा दायादतो।
Attānañca parañca anupahacca kho pana, bhikkhave, dānaṁ datvā yattha yattha tassa dānassa vipāko nibbattati, aḍḍho ca hoti mahaddhano mahābhogo; na cassa kutoci bhogānaṁ upaghāto āgacchati aggito vā udakato vā rājato vā corato vā appiyato vā dāyādato.
Having given a gift without hurting themselves or others, in whatever place the result of that gift manifests they become rich, affluent, and wealthy. And no damage comes to their property from anywhere, whether fire, flood, rulers, bandits, or unloved heirs.
इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च सप्पुरिसदानानी”ति।
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca sappurisadānānī”ti.
These are the five gifts of a good person.”
