    A Good Person

    “सप्पुरिसो, भिक्खवे, कुले जायमानो बहुनो जनस्स अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति—मातापितूनं अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, पुत्तदारस्स अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, दासकम्मकरपोरिसस्स अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, मित्तामच्चानं अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, पुब्बपेतानं अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, रञ्ञो अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, देवतानं अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, समणब्राह्मणानं अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति।

    “Sappuriso, bhikkhave, kule jāyamāno bahuno janassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti—mātāpitūnaṁ atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, puttadārassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, dāsakammakaraporisassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, mittāmaccānaṁ atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, pubbapetānaṁ atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, rañño atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, devatānaṁ atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti.

    “Bhikkhus, a good person is born in a family for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of the people. For the benefit, welfare, and happiness of mother and father; children and partners; bondservants, workers, and staff; friends and colleagues; departed ancestors; the king; the deities; and ascetics and brahmins.

    सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, महामेघो सब्बसस्सानि सम्पादेन्तो बहुनो जनस्स अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, सप्पुरिसो कुले जायमानो बहुनो जनस्स अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति—मातापितूनं अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, पुत्तदारस्स अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, दासकम्मकरपोरिसस्स अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, मित्तामच्चानं अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, पुब्बपेतानं अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, रञ्ञो अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, देवतानं अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होति, समणब्राह्मणानं अत्थाय हिताय सुखाय होतीति।

    Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, mahāmegho sabbasassāni sampādento bahuno janassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya1 hoti; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, sappuriso kule jāyamāno bahuno janassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti—mātāpitūnaṁ atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, puttadārassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, dāsakammakaraporisassa atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, mittāmaccānaṁ atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, pubbapetānaṁ atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, rañño atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, devatānaṁ atthāya hitāya sukhāya hoti, samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ atthāya hitāya sukhāya hotīti.

    It’s like a great rain cloud, which nourishes all the crops for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of the people. In the same way, a good person is born in a family for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of the people. …

    बहूनं वत अत्थाय, सप्पञ्ञो घरमावसं; मातरं पितरं पुब्बे, रत्तिन्दिवमतन्दितो। पूजेति सहधम्मेन, पुब्बेकतमनुस्सरं;

    Bahūnaṁ2 vata atthāya, sappañño gharamāvasaṁ; Mātaraṁ pitaraṁ pubbe, rattindivamatandito. Pūjeti sahadhammena, pubbekatamanussaraṁ;

    A wise person living at home benefits many people. Neither by day or at night do they neglect their mother, father, and ancestors. They venerate them in accord with the teaching, remembering what they have done.

    अनागारे पब्बजिते, अपचे ब्रह्मचारयो। निविट्ठसद्धो पूजेति, ञत्वा धम्मे च पेसलो;

    Anāgāre pabbajite, apace brahmacārayo. Niviṭṭhasaddho pūjeti, ñatvā dhamme ca pesalo;

    One of settled faith and good nature venerates the homeless renunciates, the bhikkhu spiritual practitioners, knowing their good-hearted qualities.

    रञ्ञो हितो देवहितो, ञातीनं सखिनं हितो।

    Rañño hito devahito, ñātīnaṁ sakhinaṁ hito.

    Good for the king, good for the gods, and good for relatives and friends.

    सब्बेसं सो हितो होति, सद्धम्मे सुप्पतिट्ठितो; विनेय्य मच्छेरमलं, स लोकं भजते सिवन्”ति।

    Sabbesaṁ3 so hito hoti, saddhamme suppatiṭṭhito; Vineyya maccheramalaṁ, sa lokaṁ bhajate sivan”ti.

    In fact, they’re good for everyone, well grounded in the true teaching. Rid of the stain of stinginess, they’ll enjoy a world of grace.”

    अट्ठमं।

    Aṭṭhamaṁ.
