    Sārandadasutta

    At Sārandada

    एकं समयं भगवा वेसालियं विहरति महावने कूटागारसालायं।

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

    अथ खो भगवा पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय वेसालिं पिण्डाय पाविसि।

    Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya vesāliṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi.

    Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Vesālī for alms.

    तेन खो पन समयेन पञ्चमत्तानं लिच्छविसतानं सारन्ददे चेतिये सन्निसिन्नानं सन्निपतितानं अयमन्तराकथा उदपादि: “पञ्चन्नं रतनानं पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं। कतमेसं पञ्चन्नं? हत्थिरतनस्स पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं, अस्सरतनस्स पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं, मणिरतनस्स पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं, इत्थिरतनस्स पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं, गहपतिरतनस्स पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं। इमेसं पञ्चन्नं रतनानं पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिन्”ति।

    Tena kho pana samayena pañcamattānaṁ licchavisatānaṁ sārandade cetiye sannisinnānaṁ sannipatitānaṁ ayamantarākathā udapādi: “pañcannaṁ ratanānaṁ pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ. Katamesaṁ pañcannaṁ? Hatthiratanassa pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ, assaratanassa pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ, maṇiratanassa pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ, itthiratanassa pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ, gahapatiratanassa pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ. Imesaṁ pañcannaṁ ratanānaṁ pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmin”ti.

    Now at that time around five hundred Licchavis were sitting together at the Sārandada shrine, and this discussion came up among them, “The appearance of five treasures is rare in the world. What five? The elephant-treasure, the horse-treasure, the jewel-treasure, the woman-treasure, and the householder-treasure. The appearance of these five treasures is rare in the world.”

    अथ खो ते लिच्छवी मग्गे पुरिसं ठपेसुं: “यदा त्वं, अम्भो पुरिस, पस्सेय्यासि भगवन्तं, अथ अम्हाकं आरोचेय्यासी”ति।

    Atha kho te licchavī magge purisaṁ ṭhapesuṁ: “yadā tvaṁ, ambho purisa, passeyyāsi bhagavantaṁ, atha amhākaṁ āroceyyāsī”ti.

    Then those Licchavis sent a man out on to the road, saying, “Mister, please tell us when you see the Buddha.”

    अद्दसा खो सो पुरिसो भगवन्तं दूरतोव आगच्छन्तं; दिस्वान येन ते लिच्छवी तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा ते लिच्छवी एतदवोच: “अयं सो, भन्ते, भगवा गच्छति अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो; यस्सदानि कालं मञ्ञथा”ति।

    Addasā kho so puriso bhagavantaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ; disvāna yena te licchavī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā te licchavī etadavoca: “ayaṁ so, bhante, bhagavā gacchati arahaṁ sammāsambuddho; yassadāni kālaṁ maññathā”ti.

    That man saw the Buddha coming off in the distance. He went to the Licchavis and said, “Sirs, the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha is coming. Please go at your convenience.”

    अथ खो ते लिच्छवी येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठंसु। एकमन्तं ठिता खो ते लिच्छवी भगवन्तं एतदवोचुं: “साधु, भन्ते, येन सारन्ददं चेतियं तेनुपसङ्कमतु अनुकम्पं उपादाया”ति। अधिवासेसि भगवा तुण्हीभावेन।

    Atha kho te licchavī yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho te licchavī bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: “Sādhu, bhante, yena sārandadaṁ cetiyaṁ tenupasaṅkamatu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti. Adhivāsesi bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena.

    Then those Licchavis went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him, “Please go to the Sārandada shrine, out of compassion.” The Buddha consented with silence.

    अथ खो भगवा येन सारन्ददं चेतियं तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि। निसज्ज खो भगवा ते लिच्छवी एतदवोच: “काय नुत्थ, लिच्छवी, एतरहि कथाय सन्निसिन्ना, का च पन वो अन्तराकथा विप्पकता”ति?

    Atha kho bhagavā yena sārandadaṁ cetiyaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Nisajja kho bhagavā te licchavī etadavoca: “kāya nuttha, licchavī, etarahi kathāya sannisinnā, kā ca pana vo antarākathā vippakatā”ti?

    Then the Buddha went up to the Sārandada shrine, where he sat on the seat spread out, and said to the Licchavis, “Licchavis, what were you sitting talking about just now? What conversation was left unfinished?”

    “इध, भन्ते, अम्हाकं सन्निसिन्नानं सन्निपतितानं अयमन्तराकथा उदपादि: ‘पञ्चन्नं रतनानं पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं। कतमेसं पञ्चन्नं? हत्थिरतनस्स पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं, अस्सरतनस्स पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं, मणिरतनस्स पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं, इत्थिरतनस्स पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं, गहपतिरतनस्स पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं। इमेसं पञ्चन्नं रतनानं पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिन्ऽ”ति।

    “Idha, bhante, amhākaṁ sannisinnānaṁ sannipatitānaṁ ayamantarākathā udapādi: ‘pañcannaṁ ratanānaṁ pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ. Katamesaṁ pañcannaṁ? Hatthiratanassa pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ, assaratanassa pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ, maṇiratanassa pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ, itthiratanassa pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ, gahapatiratanassa pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ. Imesaṁ pañcannaṁ ratanānaṁ pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmin’”ti.

    “Well, Master Gotama, this discussion came up among us while we were sitting together: ‘The appearance of five treasures is rare in the world. …’”

    “कामाधिमुत्तानं वत भो लिच्छवीनं कामंयेव आरब्भ अन्तराकथा उदपादि। पञ्चन्नं, लिच्छवी, रतनानं पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं। कतमेसं पञ्चन्नं?

    “Kāmādhimuttānaṁ vata bho licchavīnaṁ1 kāmaṁyeva ārabbha antarākathā udapādi. Pañcannaṁ, licchavī, ratanānaṁ pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ. Katamesaṁ pañcannaṁ?

    “You Licchavis are so fixated on sensual pleasures, that’s the only discussion that came up! Licchavis, the appearance of five treasures is rare in the world. What five?

    तथागतस्स अरहतो सम्मासम्बुद्धस्स पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं,

    Tathāgatassa arahato sammāsambuddhassa pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmiṁ,

    The appearance of a Realized One, a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha.

    तथागतप्पवेदितस्स धम्मविनयस्स देसेता पुग्गलो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं,

    tathāgatappaveditassa dhammavinayassa desetā puggalo dullabho lokasmiṁ,

    A person who explains the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One.

    तथागतप्पवेदितस्स धम्मविनयस्स देसितस्स विञ्ञाता पुग्गलो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं,

    tathāgatappaveditassa dhammavinayassa desitassa viññātā2 puggalo dullabho lokasmiṁ,

    A person who understands the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One.

    तथागतप्पवेदितस्स धम्मविनयस्स देसितस्स विञ्ञाता धम्मानुधम्मप्पटिपन्नो पुग्गलो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं,

    tathāgatappaveditassa dhammavinayassa desitassa viññātā dhammānudhammappaṭipanno puggalo dullabho lokasmiṁ,

    A person who practices in line with the teaching.

    कतञ्ञू कतवेदी पुग्गलो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं।

    kataññū katavedī puggalo dullabho lokasmiṁ.

    A person who is grateful and thankful.

    इमेसं खो, लिच्छवी, पञ्चन्नं रतनानं पातुभावो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिन्”ति।

    Imesaṁ kho, licchavī, pañcannaṁ ratanānaṁ pātubhāvo dullabho lokasmin”ti.

    The appearance of these five treasures is rare in the world.”
