The Teacher’s Instructions
अथ खो आयस्मा उपालि येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा उपालि भगवन्तं एतदवोच:
Atha kho āyasmā upāli yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā upāli bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Venerable Upāli went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“साधु मे, भन्ते, भगवा सङ्खित्तेन धम्मं देसेतु, यमहं भगवतो धम्मं सुत्वा एको वूपकट्ठो अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरेय्यन्”ति।
“Sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saṅkhittena dhammaṁ desetu, yamahaṁ bhagavato dhammaṁ sutvā eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto vihareyyan”ti.
“Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.”
“ये खो त्वं, उपालि, धम्मे जानेय्यासि: ‘इमे धम्मा न एकन्तनिब्बिदाय विरागाय निरोधाय उपसमाय अभिञ्ञाय सम्बोधाय निब्बानाय संवत्तन्तीऽति; एकंसेन, उपालि, धारेय्यासि: ‘नेसो धम्मो नेसो विनयो नेतं सत्थुसासनन्ऽति। ये च खो त्वं, उपालि, धम्मे जानेय्यासि: ‘इमे धम्मा एकन्तनिब्बिदाय विरागाय निरोधाय उपसमाय अभिञ्ञाय सम्बोधाय निब्बानाय संवत्तन्तीऽति; एकंसेन, उपालि, धारेय्यासि: ‘एसो धम्मो एसो विनयो एतं सत्थुसासनन्ऽ”ति।
“Ye kho tvaṁ, upāli, dhamme jāneyyāsi: ‘ime dhammā na ekantanibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattantī’ti; ekaṁsena, upāli, dhāreyyāsi: ‘neso dhammo neso vinayo netaṁ satthusāsanan’ti. Ye ca kho tvaṁ, upāli, dhamme jāneyyāsi: ‘ime dhammā ekantanibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattantī’ti; ekaṁsena, upāli, dhāreyyāsi: ‘eso dhammo eso vinayo etaṁ satthusāsanan’”ti.
“Upāli, you might know that certain things don’t lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and Nibbana. You should definitely bear in mind that such things are not the teaching, not the training, and not the Teacher’s instructions. You might know that certain things do lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and Nibbana.
