    Lodgings

    “पञ्चङ्गसमन्नागतो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु पञ्चङ्गसमन्नागतं सेनासनं सेवमानो भजमानो नचिरस्सेव आसवानं खया अनासवं चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरेय्य।

    “Pañcaṅgasamannāgato, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgasamannāgataṁ senāsanaṁ sevamāno bhajamāno nacirasseva āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyya.

    “Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with five factors, using and frequenting lodgings with five factors, will soon realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु पञ्चङ्गसमन्नागतो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सद्धो होति; सद्दहति तथागतस्स बोधिं: ‘इतिपि सो भगवा …पे… भगवाऽति; अप्पाबाधो होति अप्पातङ्को, समवेपाकिनिया गहणिया समन्नागतो नातिसीताय नाच्चुण्हाय मज्झिमाय पधानक्खमाय; असठो होति अमायावी, यथाभूतं अत्तानं आविकत्ता सत्थरि वा विञ्ञूसु वा सब्रह्मचारीसु; आरद्धवीरियो विहरति, अकुसलानं धम्मानं पहानाय, कुसलानं धम्मानं उपसम्पदाय; थामवा दळ्हपरक्कमो अनिक्खित्तधुरो कुसलेसु धम्मेसु; पञ्ञवा होति, उदयत्थगामिनिया पञ्ञाय समन्नागतो अरियाय निब्बेधिकाय सम्मा दुक्खक्खयगामिनिया। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु पञ्चङ्गसमन्नागतो होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgasamannāgato hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho hoti; saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiṁ: ‘itipi so bhagavā …pe… bhagavā’ti; appābādho hoti appātaṅko, samavepākiniyā gahaṇiyā samannāgato nātisītāya nāccuṇhāya majjhimāya padhānakkhamāya; asaṭho hoti amāyāvī, yathābhūtaṁ attānaṁ āvikattā satthari vā viññūsu vā sabrahmacārīsu; āraddhavīriyo viharati, akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya, kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ upasampadāya; thāmavā daḷhaparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu; paññavā hoti, udayatthagāminiyā paññāya samannāgato ariyāya nibbedhikāya sammā dukkhakkhayagāminiyā. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgasamannāgato hoti.

    And how does a bhikkhu have five factors? It’s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized One’s awakening: ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’ They are rarely ill or unwell. Their stomach digests well, being neither too hot nor too cold, but just right, and fit for meditation. They’re not devious or deceitful. They reveal themselves honestly to the Teacher or sensible spiritual companions. They live with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They’re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities. They’re wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering. That’s how a bhikkhu has five factors.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, सेनासनं पञ्चङ्गसमन्नागतं होति? इध, भिक्खवे, सेनासनं नातिदूरं होति नाच्चासन्नं गमनागमनसम्पन्नं दिवा अप्पाकिण्णं रत्तिं अप्पसद्दं अप्पनिग्घोसं अप्पडंसमकसवातातपसरीसपसम्फस्सं; तस्मिं खो पन सेनासने विहरन्तस्स अप्पकसिरेन उप्पज्जन्ति चीवरपिण्डपातसेनासनगिलानपच्चयभेसज्जपरिक्खारा; तस्मिं खो पन सेनासने थेरा भिक्खू विहरन्ति बहुस्सुता आगतागमा धम्मधरा विनयधरा मातिकाधरा; ते कालेन कालं उपसङ्कमित्वा परिपुच्छति परिपञ्हति: ‘इदं, भन्ते, कथं, इमस्स को अत्थोऽति; तस्स ते आयस्मन्तो अविवटञ्चेव विवरन्ति अनुत्तानीकतञ्च उत्तानिं करोन्ति अनेकविहितेसु च कङ्खाठानियेसु धम्मेसु कङ्खं पटिविनोदेन्ति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, सेनासनं पञ्चङ्गसमन्नागतं होति। पञ्चङ्गसमन्नागतो खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु पञ्चङ्गसमन्नागतं सेनासनं सेवमानो भजमानो नचिरस्सेव आसवानं खया …पे… सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरेय्या”ति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, senāsanaṁ pañcaṅgasamannāgataṁ hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, senāsanaṁ nātidūraṁ hoti nāccāsannaṁ gamanāgamanasampannaṁ divā appākiṇṇaṁ rattiṁ appasaddaṁ appanigghosaṁ appaḍaṁsamakasavātātapasarīsapasamphassaṁ; tasmiṁ kho pana senāsane viharantassa appakasirena uppajjanti cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārā; tasmiṁ kho pana senāsane therā bhikkhū viharanti bahussutā āgatāgamā dhammadharā vinayadharā mātikādharā; te kālena kālaṁ upasaṅkamitvā paripucchati paripañhati: ‘idaṁ, bhante, kathaṁ, imassa ko attho’ti; tassa te āyasmanto avivaṭañceva vivaranti anuttānīkatañca uttāniṁ karonti anekavihitesu ca kaṅkhāṭhāniyesu dhammesu kaṅkhaṁ paṭivinodenti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, senāsanaṁ pañcaṅgasamannāgataṁ hoti. Pañcaṅgasamannāgato kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgasamannāgataṁ senāsanaṁ sevamāno bhajamāno nacirasseva āsavānaṁ khayā …pe… sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyyā”ti.

    And how does a lodging have five factors? It’s when a lodging is neither too far nor too near, but convenient for coming and going. It’s not bothered by people by day, and at night it’s quiet and still. There’s little disturbance from flies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, and reptiles. While staying in that lodging the necessities of life—robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick—are easy to come by. And in that lodging there are several senior bhikkhus who are very learned, inheritors of the heritage, who have memorized the teachings, the monastic law, and the outlines. From time to time they go up to those bhikkhus and ask them questions: ‘Why, sir, does it say this? What does that mean?’ Those venerables clarify what is unclear, reveal what is obscure, and dispel doubt regarding the many doubtful matters. That’s how a lodging has five factors. A bhikkhu with five factors, using and frequenting lodgings with five factors, will soon realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.”
