“यो हि कोचि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु वा भिक्खुनी वा सिक्खं पच्चक्खाय हीनायावत्तति, तस्स दिट्ठेव धम्मे पञ्च सहधम्मिका वादानुपाता गारय्हा ठाना आगच्छन्ति। कतमे पञ्च? सद्धापि नाम ते नाहोसि कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, हिरीपि नाम ते नाहोसि कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, ओत्तप्पम्पि नाम ते नाहोसि कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, वीरियम्पि नाम ते नाहोसि कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, पञ्ञापि नाम ते नाहोसि कुसलेसु धम्मेसु। यो हि कोचि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु वा भिक्खुनी वा सिक्खं पच्चक्खाय हीनायावत्तति, तस्स दिट्ठेव धम्मे इमे पञ्च सहधम्मिका वादानुपाता गारय्हा ठाना आगच्छन्ति।
“Yo hi koci, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunī vā sikkhaṁ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvattati, tassa diṭṭheva1 dhamme pañca sahadhammikā vādānupātā gārayhā ṭhānā āgacchanti. Katame pañca? Saddhāpi nāma te nāhosi kusalesu dhammesu, hirīpi nāma te nāhosi kusalesu dhammesu, ottappampi nāma te nāhosi kusalesu dhammesu, vīriyampi nāma te nāhosi kusalesu dhammesu, paññāpi nāma te nāhosi kusalesu dhammesu. Yo hi koci, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunī vā sikkhaṁ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvattati, tassa diṭṭheva dhamme ime pañca sahadhammikā vādānupātā gārayhā ṭhānā āgacchanti.
“Bhikkhus, any monk or nun who resigns the training and returns to a lesser life deserves rebuke and criticism on five legitimate grounds in the present life. What five? ‘You had no faith, conscience, prudence, energy, or wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’ Any monk or nun who resigns the training and returns to a lesser life deserves rebuke and criticism on these five legitimate grounds in the present life.
यो हि कोचि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु वा भिक्खुनी वा सहापि दुक्खेन सहापि दोमनस्सेन अस्सुमुखो रुदमानो परिपुण्णं परिसुद्धं ब्रह्मचरियं चरति, तस्स दिट्ठेव धम्मे पञ्च सहधम्मिका पासंसा ठाना आगच्छन्ति। कतमे पञ्च? सद्धापि नाम ते अहोसि कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, हिरीपि नाम ते अहोसि कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, ओत्तप्पम्पि नाम ते अहोसि कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, वीरियम्पि नाम ते अहोसि कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, पञ्ञापि नाम ते अहोसि कुसलेसु धम्मेसु। यो हि कोचि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु वा भिक्खुनी वा सहापि दुक्खेन सहापि दोमनस्सेन अस्सुमुखो रुदमानो परिपुण्णं परिसुद्धं ब्रह्मचरियं चरति, तस्स दिट्ठेव धम्मे इमे पञ्च सहधम्मिका पासंसा ठाना आगच्छन्ती”ति।

Katame pañca? Saddhāpi nāma te ahosi kusalesu dhammesu, hirīpi nāma te ahosi kusalesu dhammesu, ottappampi nāma te ahosi kusalesu dhammesu, vīriyampi nāma te ahosi kusalesu dhammesu, paññāpi nāma te ahosi kusalesu dhammesu. Yo hi koci, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunī vā sahāpi dukkhena sahāpi domanassena assumukho rudamāno paripuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ carati, tassa diṭṭheva dhamme ime pañca sahadhammikā pāsaṁsā ṭhānā āgacchantī”ti.
Any monk or nun who lives the full and pure spiritual life in pain and sadness, weeping, with tearful face, deserves praise on five legitimate grounds in the present life. What five? ‘You had faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’ Any monk or nun who lives the full and pure spiritual life in pain and sadness, weeping, with tearful face, deserves praise on these five legitimate grounds in the present life.”
