    Ethics

    តត្រ ខោ អាយស្មា សារិបុត្តោ ភិក្ខូ អាមន្តេសិ:

    There Venerable Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus:

    “ទុស្សីលស្ស, អាវុសោ, សីលវិបន្នស្ស ហតូបនិសោ ហោតិ សម្មាសមាធិ; សម្មាសមាធិម្ហិ អសតិ សម្មាសមាធិវិបន្នស្ស ហតូបនិសំ ហោតិ យថាភូតញាណទស្សនំ; យថាភូតញាណទស្សនេ អសតិ យថាភូតញាណទស្សនវិបន្នស្ស ហតូបនិសោ ហោតិ និព្ពិទាវិរាគោ; និព្ពិទាវិរាគេ អសតិ និព្ពិទាវិរាគវិបន្នស្ស ហតូបនិសំ ហោតិ វិមុត្តិញាណទស្សនំ។

    “Friends, an unethical person, who lacks ethics, has destroyed a vital condition for right immersion. When there is no right immersion, one who lacks right immersion has destroyed a vital condition for true knowledge and vision. When there is no true knowledge and vision, one who lacks true knowledge and vision has destroyed a vital condition for disillusionment and dispassion. When there is no disillusionment and dispassion, one who lacks disillusionment and dispassion has destroyed a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.

    សេយ្យថាបិ, អាវុសោ, រុក្ខោ សាខាបលាសវិបន្នោ។ តស្ស បបដិកាបិ ន បារិបូរិំ គច្ឆតិ, តចោបិ ផេគ្គុបិ សារោបិ ន បារិបូរិំ គច្ឆតិ។

    Suppose there was a tree that lacked branches and foliage. Its shoots, bark, softwood, and heartwood would not grow to fullness.

    ឯវមេវំ ខោ, អាវុសោ, ទុស្សីលស្ស សីលវិបន្នស្ស ហតូបនិសោ ហោតិ សម្មាសមាធិ; សម្មាសមាធិម្ហិ អសតិ សម្មាសមាធិវិបន្នស្ស ហតូបនិសំ ហោតិ យថាភូតញាណទស្សនំ; យថាភូតញាណទស្សនេ អសតិ យថាភូតញាណទស្សនវិបន្នស្ស ហតូបនិសោ ហោតិ និព្ពិទាវិរាគោ; និព្ពិទាវិរាគេ អសតិ និព្ពិទាវិរាគវិបន្នស្ស ហតូបនិសំ ហោតិ វិមុត្តិញាណទស្សនំ។

    In the same way, an unethical person, who lacks ethics, has destroyed a vital condition for right immersion. When there is no right immersion, one who lacks right immersion has destroyed a vital condition for true knowledge and vision. When there is no true knowledge and vision, one who lacks true knowledge and vision has destroyed a vital condition for disillusionment and dispassion. When there is no disillusionment and dispassion, one who lacks disillusionment and dispassion has destroyed a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.

    សីលវតោ, អាវុសោ, សីលសម្បន្នស្ស ឧបនិសសម្បន្នោ ហោតិ សម្មាសមាធិ; សម្មាសមាធិម្ហិ សតិ សម្មាសមាធិសម្បន្នស្ស ឧបនិសសម្បន្នំ ហោតិ យថាភូតញាណទស្សនំ; យថាភូតញាណទស្សនេ សតិ យថាភូតញាណទស្សនសម្បន្នស្ស ឧបនិសសម្បន្នោ ហោតិ និព្ពិទាវិរាគោ; និព្ពិទាវិរាគេ សតិ និព្ពិទាវិរាគសម្បន្នស្ស ឧបនិសសម្បន្នំ ហោតិ វិមុត្តិញាណទស្សនំ។

    An ethical person, who has fulfilled ethics, has fulfilled a vital condition for right immersion. When there is right immersion, one who has fulfilled right immersion has fulfilled a vital condition for true knowledge and vision. When there is true knowledge and vision, one who has fulfilled true knowledge and vision has fulfilled a vital condition for disillusionment and dispassion. When there is disillusionment and dispassion, one who has fulfilled disillusionment and dispassion has fulfilled a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.

    សេយ្យថាបិ, អាវុសោ, រុក្ខោ, សាខាបលាសសម្បន្នោ។ តស្ស បបដិកាបិ បារិបូរិំ គច្ឆតិ, តចោបិ ផេគ្គុបិ សារោបិ បារិបូរិំ គច្ឆតិ។ ឯវមេវំ ខោ, អាវុសោ, សីលវតោ សីលសម្បន្នស្ស ឧបនិសសម្បន្នោ ហោតិ សម្មាសមាធិ;

    Suppose there was a tree that was complete with branches and foliage. Its shoots, bark, softwood, and heartwood would grow to fullness. In the same way, an ethical person, who has fulfilled ethics, has fulfilled a vital condition for right immersion.

    សម្មាសមាធិម្ហិ សតិ សម្មាសមាធិសម្បន្នស្ស ឧបនិសសម្បន្នំ ហោតិ យថាភូតញាណទស្សនំ; យថាភូតញាណទស្សនេ សតិ យថាភូតញាណទស្សនសម្បន្នស្ស ឧបនិសសម្បន្នោ ហោតិ និព្ពិទាវិរាគោ; និព្ពិទាវិរាគេ សតិ និព្ពិទាវិរាគសម្បន្នស្ស ឧបនិសសម្បន្នំ ហោតិ វិមុត្តិញាណទស្សនន៑”តិ។

    When there is right immersion, one who has fulfilled right immersion has fulfilled a vital condition for true knowledge and vision. When there is true knowledge and vision, one who has fulfilled true knowledge and vision has fulfilled a vital condition for disillusionment and dispassion. When there is disillusionment and dispassion, one who has fulfilled disillusionment and dispassion has fulfilled a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.”
