Ethics
තත්ර ඛෝ ආයස්මා සාරිපුත්තෝ භික්ඛූ ආමන්තේසි:
There Venerable Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus:
“දුස්සීලස්ස, ආවුසෝ, සීලවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසෝ හෝති සම්මාසමාධි; සම්මාසමාධිම්හි අසති සම්මාසමාධිවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසං හෝති යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනං; යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනේ අසති යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසෝ හෝති නිබ්බිදාවිරාගෝ; නිබ්බිදාවිරාගේ අසති නිබ්බිදාවිරාගවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසං හෝති විමුත්තිඤාණදස්සනං.
“Friends, an unethical person, who lacks ethics, has destroyed a vital condition for right immersion. When there is no right immersion, one who lacks right immersion has destroyed a vital condition for true knowledge and vision. When there is no true knowledge and vision, one who lacks true knowledge and vision has destroyed a vital condition for disillusionment and dispassion. When there is no disillusionment and dispassion, one who lacks disillusionment and dispassion has destroyed a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.
සේය්යථාපි, ආවුසෝ, රුක්ඛෝ සාඛාපලාසවිපන්නෝ. තස්ස පපටිකාපි න පාරිපූරිං ගච්ඡති, තචෝපි ඵේග්ගුපි සාරෝපි න පාරිපූරිං ගච්ඡති.
Suppose there was a tree that lacked branches and foliage. Its shoots, bark, softwood, and heartwood would not grow to fullness.
ඒවමේවං ඛෝ, ආවුසෝ, දුස්සීලස්ස සීලවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසෝ හෝති සම්මාසමාධි; සම්මාසමාධිම්හි අසති සම්මාසමාධිවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසං හෝති යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනං; යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනේ අසති යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසෝ හෝති නිබ්බිදාවිරාගෝ; නිබ්බිදාවිරාගේ අසති නිබ්බිදාවිරාගවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසං හෝති විමුත්තිඤාණදස්සනං.
In the same way, an unethical person, who lacks ethics, has destroyed a vital condition for right immersion. When there is no right immersion, one who lacks right immersion has destroyed a vital condition for true knowledge and vision. When there is no true knowledge and vision, one who lacks true knowledge and vision has destroyed a vital condition for disillusionment and dispassion. When there is no disillusionment and dispassion, one who lacks disillusionment and dispassion has destroyed a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.
සීලවතෝ, ආවුසෝ, සීලසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නෝ හෝති සම්මාසමාධි; සම්මාසමාධිම්හි සති සම්මාසමාධිසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නං හෝති යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනං; යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනේ සති යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නෝ හෝති නිබ්බිදාවිරාගෝ; නිබ්බිදාවිරාගේ සති නිබ්බිදාවිරාගසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නං හෝති විමුත්තිඤාණදස්සනං.
An ethical person, who has fulfilled ethics, has fulfilled a vital condition for right immersion. When there is right immersion, one who has fulfilled right immersion has fulfilled a vital condition for true knowledge and vision. When there is true knowledge and vision, one who has fulfilled true knowledge and vision has fulfilled a vital condition for disillusionment and dispassion. When there is disillusionment and dispassion, one who has fulfilled disillusionment and dispassion has fulfilled a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.

සම්මාසමාධිම්හි සති සම්මාසමාධිසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නං හෝති යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනං; යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනේ සති යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නෝ හෝති නිබ්බිදාවිරාගෝ; නිබ්බිදාවිරාගේ සති නිබ්බිදාවිරාගසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නං හෝති විමුත්තිඤාණදස්සනන්”ති.
When there is right immersion, one who has fulfilled right immersion has fulfilled a vital condition for true knowledge and vision. When there is true knowledge and vision, one who has fulfilled true knowledge and vision has fulfilled a vital condition for disillusionment and dispassion. When there is disillusionment and dispassion, one who has fulfilled disillusionment and dispassion has fulfilled a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.”
