“පඤ්චහි, භික්ඛවේ, ධම්මේහි සමන්නාගතෝ ආවාසිකෝ භික්ඛු ආවාසං සෝභේති. කතමේහි පඤ්චහි?
“Bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu with five qualities beautifies the monastery. What five?
සීලවා හෝති …පේ… සමාදාය සික්ඛති සික්ඛාපදේසු;
They’re ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.
බහුස්සුතෝ හෝති …පේ… දිට්ඨියා සුප්පටිවිද්ධා;
They’re very learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s totally full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reciting them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.
කල්යාණවාචෝ හෝති කල්යාණවාක්කරණෝ පෝරියා වාචාය සමන්නාගතෝ විස්සට්ඨාය අනේලගලාය අත්ථස්ස විඤ්ඤාපනියා;
They’re a good speaker, with a polished, clear, and articulate voice that expresses the meaning.
පටිබලෝ හෝති උපසඞ්කමන්තේ ධම්මියා කථාය සන්දස්සේතුං සමාදපේතුං සමුත්තේජේතුං සම්පහංසේතුං;
They’re able to educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire those who approach them with a Dhamma talk.
චතුන්නං ඣානානං ආභිචේතසිකානං දිට්ඨධම්මසුඛවිහාරානං නිකාමලාභී හෝති අකිච්ඡලාභී අකසිරලාභී.
They get the four jhānas—blissful meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.
ඉමේහි ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, පඤ්චහි ධම්මේහි සමන්නාගතෝ ආවාසිකෝ භික්ඛු ආවාසං සෝභේතී”ති.
A resident bhikkhu with these five qualities beautifies the monastery.”
