    SOD2 wt Allele

Human SOD2 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 6q25.3 and is approximately 14 kb in length. This allele, which encodes superoxide dismutase [Mn], mitochondrial protein, is involved in the conversion of superoxide radicals to molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. It also plays a role in modifying iron toxivity. Certain allelic variants of the SOD2 gene are associated with nonfamilial idiopathic cardiomyopathy. (NCI Thesaurus)
