    Suppavāsā

    एकं समयं भगवा कोलियेसु विहरति पज्जनिकं नाम कोलियानं निगमो।

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā koliyesu viharati pajjanikaṁ1 nāma koliyānaṁ2 nigamo.

    At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Koliyans, where they have a town named Pajjanika.

    अथ खो भगवा पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय येन सुप्पवासाय कोलियधीतुया निवेसनं तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि। अथ खो सुप्पवासा कोलियधीता भगवन्तं पणीतेन खादनीयेन भोजनीयेन सहत्था सन्तप्पेसि सम्पवारेसि। अथ खो सुप्पवासा कोलियधीता भगवन्तं भुत्ताविं ओनीतपत्तपाणिं एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो सुप्पवासं कोलियधीतरं भगवा एतदवोच:

    Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena suppavāsāya koliyadhītuyā nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Atha kho suppavāsā koliyadhītā bhagavantaṁ paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi. Atha kho suppavāsā koliyadhītā bhagavantaṁ bhuttāviṁ onītapattapāṇiṁ ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho suppavāsaṁ koliyadhītaraṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

    Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of Suppavāsā the Koliyan, where he sat on the seat spread out. Then Suppavāsā served and satisfied the Buddha with her own hands with delicious fresh and cooked foods. When the Buddha had eaten and washed his hand and bowl, she sat down to one side. The Buddha said to her:

    “भोजनं, सुप्पवासे, देन्ती अरियसाविका पटिग्गाहकानं चत्तारि ठानानि देति। कतमानि चत्तारि? आयुं देति, वण्णं देति, सुखं देति, बलं देति। आयुं खो पन दत्वा आयुस्स भागिनी होति दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा। वण्णं दत्वा वण्णस्स भागिनी होति दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा। सुखं दत्वा सुखस्स भागिनी होति दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा। बलं दत्वा बलस्स भागिनी होति दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा। भोजनं, सुप्पवासे, देन्ती अरियसाविका पटिग्गाहकानं इमानि चत्तारि ठानानि देतीति।

    “Bhojanaṁ, suppavāse, dentī ariyasāvikā paṭiggāhakānaṁ cattāri ṭhānāni deti. Katamāni cattāri? Āyuṁ deti, vaṇṇaṁ deti, sukhaṁ deti, balaṁ deti. Āyuṁ kho pana datvā āyussa bhāginī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā. Vaṇṇaṁ datvā vaṇṇassa bhāginī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā. Sukhaṁ datvā sukhassa bhāginī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā. Balaṁ datvā balassa bhāginī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā. Bhojanaṁ, suppavāse, dentī ariyasāvikā paṭiggāhakānaṁ imāni cattāri ṭhānāni detīti.

    “Suppavāsā, when a noble disciple gives food, she gives the recipients four things. What four? Long life, beauty, happiness, and strength. Giving long life, she has long life as a god or human. Giving beauty, she has beauty as a god or human. Giving happiness, she has happiness as a god or human. Giving strength, she has strength as a god or human. When a noble disciple gives food, she gives the recipients these four things.

    सुसङ्खतं भोजनं या ददाति, सुचिं पणीतं रससा उपेतं; सा दक्खिणा उज्जुगतेसु दिन्ना, चरणूपपन्नेसु महग्गतेसु; पुञ्ञेन पुञ्ञं संसन्दमाना, महप्फला लोकविदून वण्णिता।

    Susaṅkhataṁ3 bhojanaṁ yā dadāti, Suciṁ paṇītaṁ4 rasasā upetaṁ; Sā dakkhiṇā ujjugatesu dinnā, Caraṇūpapannesu mahaggatesu; Puññena puññaṁ saṁsandamānā, Mahapphalā lokavidūna vaṇṇitā.

    When she gives well-prepared food, pure, fine, and full of flavor, that offering—given to the upright, who have good conduct, and are big-hearted—joins merit to merit. It’s very fruitful, and is praised by those who know the world.

    एतादिसं यञ्ञमनुस्सरन्ता, ये वेदजाता विचरन्ति लोके; विनेय्य मच्छेरमलं समूलं, अनिन्दिता सग्गमुपेन्ति ठानन्”ति।

    Etādisaṁ yaññamanussarantā, Ye vedajātā vicaranti loke; Vineyya maccheramalaṁ samūlaṁ, Aninditā saggamupenti ṭhānan”ti.

    Those who recall such sacrifices, live in the world full of inspiration. They’ve driven out the stain of stinginess, root and all, blameless, they go to a heavenly place.”

    सत्तमं।
