    Craving, the Weaver

    भगवा एतदवोच:

    Bhagavā etadavoca:

    The Buddha said this:

    “तण्हं वो, भिक्खवे, देसेस्सामि जालिनिं सरितं विसटं विसत्तिकं, याय अयं लोको उद्धस्तो परियोनद्धो तन्ताकुलकजातो गुलागुण्ठिकजातो मुञ्जपब्बजभूतो अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं संसारं नातिवत्तति। तं सुणाथ, साधुकं मनसि करोथ, भासिस्सामी”ति।

    “taṇhaṁ vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi jāliniṁ saritaṁ visaṭaṁ visattikaṁ, yāya ayaṁ loko uddhasto pariyonaddho tantākulakajāto gulāguṇṭhikajāto muñjapabbajabhūto apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ saṁsāraṁ nātivattati. Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, I will teach you about craving—the weaver, the migrant, the creeping, the clinging. This world is choked by it, engulfed by it. It makes the world tangled like yarn, knotted like a ball of thread, and matted like rushes and reeds, not escaping the places of loss, the bad places, the underworld, transmigration. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति खो ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं। भगवा एतदवोच:

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca:

    “Yes, sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

    “कतमा च सा, भिक्खवे, तण्हा जालिनी सरिता विसटा विसत्तिका, याय अयं लोको उद्धस्तो परियोनद्धो तन्ताकुलकजातो गुलागुण्ठिकजातो मुञ्जपब्बजभूतो अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं संसारं नातिवत्तति? अट्ठारस खो पनिमानि, भिक्खवे, तण्हाविचरितानि अज्झत्तिकस्स उपादाय, अट्ठारस तण्हाविचरितानि बाहिरस्स उपादाय।

    “Katamā ca sā, bhikkhave, taṇhā jālinī saritā visaṭā visattikā, yāya ayaṁ loko uddhasto pariyonaddho tantākulakajāto gulāguṇṭhikajāto muñjapabbajabhūto apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ saṁsāraṁ nātivattati? Aṭṭhārasa kho panimāni, bhikkhave, taṇhāvicaritāni ajjhattikassa upādāya, aṭṭhārasa taṇhāvicaritāni bāhirassa upādāya.

    “And what is that craving …? There are eighteen currents of craving that derive from the interior, and eighteen that derive from the exterior.

    कतमानि अट्ठारस तण्हाविचरितानि अज्झत्तिकस्स उपादाय? अस्मीति, भिक्खवे, सति इत्थस्मीति होति, एवंस्मीति होति, अञ्ञथास्मीति होति, असस्मीति होति, सतस्मीति होति, सन्ति होति, इत्थं सन्ति होति, एवं सन्ति होति, अञ्ञथा सन्ति होति, अपिहं सन्ति होति, अपिहं इत्थं सन्ति होति, अपिहं एवं सन्ति होति, अपिहं अञ्ञथा सन्ति होति, भविस्सन्ति होति, इत्थं भविस्सन्ति होति, एवं भविस्सन्ति होति, अञ्ञथा भविस्सन्ति होति। इमानि अट्ठारस तण्हाविचरितानि अज्झत्तिकस्स उपादाय।

Asmīti, bhikkhave, sati itthasmīti hoti, evaṁsmīti1 hoti, aññathāsmīti hoti, asasmīti hoti, satasmīti hoti, santi hoti, itthaṁ santi hoti, evaṁ santi hoti, aññathā santi hoti, apihaṁ santi hoti, apihaṁ itthaṁ santi hoti, apihaṁ evaṁ santi hoti, apihaṁ aññathā santi hoti, bhavissanti hoti, itthaṁ bhavissanti hoti, evaṁ bhavissanti hoti, aññathā bhavissanti hoti. Imāni aṭṭhārasa taṇhāvicaritāni ajjhattikassa upādāya.

    What are the eighteen currents of craving that derive from the interior? When there is the concept ‘I am’, there are the concepts ‘I am such’, ‘I am thus’, ‘I am otherwise’; ‘I am fleeting’, ‘I am lasting’; ‘mine’, ‘such is mine’, ‘thus is mine’, ‘otherwise is mine’; ‘also mine’, ‘such is also mine’, ‘thus is also mine’, ‘otherwise is also mine’; ‘I will be’, ‘I will be such’, ‘I will be thus’, ‘I will be otherwise’. These are the eighteen currents of craving that derive from the interior.

    कतमानि अट्ठारस तण्हाविचरितानि बाहिरस्स उपादाय? इमिनास्मीति, भिक्खवे, सति इमिना इत्थस्मीति होति, इमिना एवंस्मीति होति, इमिना अञ्ञथास्मीति होति, इमिना असस्मीति होति, इमिना सतस्मीति होति, इमिना सन्ति होति, इमिना इत्थं सन्ति होति, इमिना एवं सन्ति होति, इमिना अञ्ञथा सन्ति होति, इमिना अपिहं सन्ति होति, इमिना अपिहं इत्थं सन्ति होति, इमिना अपिहं एवं सन्ति होति, इमिना अपिहं अञ्ञथा सन्ति होति, इमिना भविस्सन्ति होति, इमिना इत्थं भविस्सन्ति होति, इमिना एवं भविस्सन्ति होति, इमिना अञ्ञथा भविस्सन्ति होति। इमानि अट्ठारस तण्हाविचरितानि बाहिरस्स उपादाय।

    What are the eighteen currents of craving that derive from the exterior? When there is the concept ‘I am because of this’, there are the concepts ‘I am such because of this’, ‘I am thus because of this’, ‘I am otherwise because of this’; ‘I am fleeting because of this’, ‘I am lasting because of this’; ‘mine because of this’, ‘such is mine because of this’, ‘thus is mine because of this’, ‘otherwise is mine because of this’; ‘also mine because of this’, ‘such is also mine because of this’, ‘thus is also mine because of this’, ‘otherwise is also mine because of this’; ‘I will be because of this’, ‘I will be such because of this’, ‘I will be thus because of this’, ‘I will be otherwise because of this’.     इति अट्ठारस तण्हाविचरितानि अज्झत्तिकस्स उपादाय, अट्ठारस तण्हाविचरितानि बाहिरस्स उपादाय। इमानि वुच्चन्ति, भिक्खवे, छत्तिंस तण्हाविचरितानि। इति एवरूपानि अतीतानि छत्तिंस तण्हाविचरितानि, अनागतानि छत्तिंस तण्हाविचरितानि, पच्चुप्पन्नानि छत्तिंस तण्हाविचरितानि। एवं अट्ठसतं तण्हाविचरितं होन्ति।

    Iti aṭṭhārasa taṇhāvicaritāni ajjhattikassa upādāya, aṭṭhārasa taṇhāvicaritāni bāhirassa upādāya. Imāni vuccanti, bhikkhave, chattiṁsa taṇhāvicaritāni. Iti evarūpāni atītāni chattiṁsa taṇhāvicaritāni, anāgatāni chattiṁsa taṇhāvicaritāni, paccuppannāni chattiṁsa taṇhāvicaritāni. Evaṁ aṭṭhasataṁ taṇhāvicaritaṁ honti.

    So there are eighteen currents of craving that derive from the interior, and eighteen that derive from the exterior. These are called the thirty-six currents of craving. Each of these pertain to the past, future, and present, making one hundred and eight currents of craving.

    अयं खो सा, भिक्खवे, तण्हा जालिनी सरिता विसटा विसत्तिका, याय अयं लोको उद्धस्तो परियोनद्धो तन्ताकुलकजातो गुणागुण्ठिकजातो मुञ्जपब्बजभूतो अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं संसारं नातिवत्तती”ति।

    Ayaṁ kho sā, bhikkhave, taṇhā jālinī saritā visaṭā visattikā, yāya ayaṁ loko uddhasto pariyonaddho tantākulakajāto guṇāguṇṭhikajāto muñjapabbajabhūto apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ saṁsāraṁ nātivattatī”ti.

    This is that craving—the weaver, the migrant, the creeping, the clinging. This world is choked by it, engulfed by it. It makes the world tangled like yarn, knotted like a ball of thread, and matted like rushes and reeds, not escaping the places of loss, the bad places, the underworld, transmigration.”
