    Things

    “चत्तारिमानि, भिक्खवे, ठानानि। कतमानि चत्तारि?

    “Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, ṭhānāni. Katamāni cattāri?

    “Bhikkhus, there are these four things. What four?

      अत्थि, भिक्खवे, ठानं अमनापं कातुं; तञ्च कयिरमानं अनत्थाय संवत्तति।

      Atthi, bhikkhave, ṭhānaṁ amanāpaṁ kātuṁ; tañca kayiramānaṁ anatthāya saṁvattati.

      There is a thing that’s unpleasant to do, and doing it proves harmful.

    अत्थि, भिक्खवे, ठानं अमनापं कातुं; तञ्च कयिरमानं अत्थाय संवत्तति।

    Atthi, bhikkhave, ṭhānaṁ amanāpaṁ kātuṁ; tañca kayiramānaṁ atthāya saṁvattati.

    There is a thing that’s unpleasant to do, but doing it proves beneficial.

    अत्थि, भिक्खवे, ठानं मनापं कातुं; तञ्च कयिरमानं अनत्थाय संवत्तति।

    Atthi, bhikkhave, ṭhānaṁ manāpaṁ kātuṁ; tañca kayiramānaṁ anatthāya saṁvattati.

    There is a thing that’s pleasant to do, but doing it proves harmful.

    अत्थि, भिक्खवे, ठानं मनापं कातुं; तञ्च कयिरमानं अत्थाय संवत्तति।

    Atthi, bhikkhave, ṭhānaṁ manāpaṁ kātuṁ; tañca kayiramānaṁ atthāya saṁvattati.

    There is a thing that’s pleasant to do, and doing it proves beneficial.

    तत्र, भिक्खवे, यमिदं ठानं अमनापं कातुं; तञ्च कयिरमानं अनत्थाय संवत्तति—इदं, भिक्खवे, ठानं उभयेनेव न कत्तब्बं मञ्ञति। यम्पिदं ठानं अमनापं कातुं; इमिनापि नं न कत्तब्बं मञ्ञति। यम्पिदं ठानं कयिरमानं अनत्थाय संवत्तति; इमिनापि नं न कत्तब्बं मञ्ञति। इदं, भिक्खवे, ठानं उभयेनेव न कत्तब्बं मञ्ञति।

    Tatra, bhikkhave, yamidaṁ ṭhānaṁ amanāpaṁ kātuṁ; tañca kayiramānaṁ anatthāya saṁvattati—idaṁ, bhikkhave, ṭhānaṁ ubhayeneva na kattabbaṁ maññati. Yampidaṁ ṭhānaṁ amanāpaṁ kātuṁ; imināpi naṁ1 na kattabbaṁ maññati. Yampidaṁ ṭhānaṁ kayiramānaṁ anatthāya saṁvattati; imināpi naṁ2 na kattabbaṁ maññati. Idaṁ, bhikkhave, ṭhānaṁ ubhayeneva na kattabbaṁ maññati.

    Take the thing that’s unpleasant to do, and doing it proves harmful. This is regarded as a thing that shouldn’t be done on both grounds: because it’s unpleasant, and because doing it proves harmful. This is regarded as a thing that shouldn’t be done on both grounds.

    तत्र, भिक्खवे, यमिदं ठानं अमनापं कातुं; तञ्च कयिरमानं अत्थाय संवत्तति—इमस्मिं, भिक्खवे, ठाने बालो च पण्डितो च वेदितब्बो पुरिसथामे पुरिसवीरिये पुरिसपरक्कमे। न, भिक्खवे, बालो इति पटिसञ्चिक्खति: ‘किञ्चापि खो इदं ठानं अमनापं कातुं; अथ चरहिदं ठानं कयिरमानं अत्थाय संवत्ततीऽति। सो तं ठानं न करोति। तस्स तं ठानं अकयिरमानं अनत्थाय संवत्तति। पण्डितो च खो, भिक्खवे, इति पटिसञ्चिक्खति: ‘किञ्चापि खो इदं ठानं अमनापं कातुं; अथ चरहिदं ठानं कयिरमानं अत्थाय संवत्ततीऽति। सो तं ठानं करोति। तस्स तं ठानं कयिरमानं अत्थाय संवत्तति।

Na, bhikkhave, bālo iti paṭisañcikkhati: ‘kiñcāpi kho idaṁ ṭhānaṁ amanāpaṁ kātuṁ; atha carahidaṁ ṭhānaṁ kayiramānaṁ atthāya saṁvattatī’ti. So taṁ ṭhānaṁ na karoti. Tassa taṁ ṭhānaṁ akayiramānaṁ anatthāya saṁvattati. Paṇḍito ca kho, bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati: ‘kiñcāpi kho idaṁ ṭhānaṁ amanāpaṁ kātuṁ; atha carahidaṁ ṭhānaṁ kayiramānaṁ atthāya saṁvattatī’ti. So taṁ ṭhānaṁ karoti. Tassa taṁ ṭhānaṁ kayiramānaṁ atthāya saṁvattati.

    Next, take the thing that’s unpleasant to do, but doing it proves beneficial. It is here that you can tell who is foolish and who is astute in regard to human strength, energy, and vigor. A fool doesn’t reflect: ‘Despite the fact that this thing is unpleasant to do, doing it still proves beneficial.’ They don’t do that thing, so that proves harmful. An astute person does reflect: ‘Despite the fact that this thing is unpleasant to do, doing it still proves beneficial.’ They do that thing, so that proves beneficial.

    Next, take the thing that’s pleasant to do, but doing it proves harmful. It is here that you can tell who is foolish and who is astute in regard to human strength, energy, and vigor.     Next, take the thing that’s pleasant to do, and doing it proves beneficial. This is regarded as a thing that should be done on both grounds: because it’s pleasant, and because doing it proves beneficial. This is regarded as a thing that should be done on both grounds.

    इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारि ठानानी”ति।

    Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri ṭhānānī”ti.

    These are the four things.”
