    Thyroid Gland Follicular Carcinoma

    Definition 1

A differentiated adenocarcinoma arising from the follicular cells of the thyroid gland. The nuclear features which characterise the thyroid gland papillary carcinoma are absent. It is linked to radiation and comprises approximately 10% to 15% of thyroid cancers. Clinically, it usually presents as a solitary mass in the thyroid gland. It is generally unifocal and thickly encapsulated and shows invasion of the capsule or the vessels. Diagnostic procedures include: thyroid function tests, thyroid radioisotope scanning, thyroid ultrasound and fine needle biopsy. Treatment options include: partial or complete thyroidectomy. Adjuvant treatment options include: radioiodine therapy, TSH suppression and external radiation. (NCI Thesaurus)

    Definition 2

A malignant neoplasia arising from follicular cells of the thyroid gland. (NCI Thesaurus/CDISC)

    Definition 3

Cancer that forms in follicular cells in the thyroid. It grows slowly and is highly treatable. (NCI Dictionary)
