A Simile With Water
“सत्तिमे, भिक्खवे, उदकूपमा पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं।
“Sattime, bhikkhave, udakūpamā puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.
“Bhikkhus, these seven people found in the world are like those in water.
कतमे सत्त? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो सकिं निमुग्गो निमुग्गोव होति; इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा निमुज्जति; इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा ठितो होति; इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा विपस्सति विलोकेति; इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा पतरति; इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा पतिगाधप्पत्तो होति; इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा तिण्णो होति पारङ्गतो थले तिट्ठति ब्राह्मणो।
Katame satta? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo sakiṁ nimuggo nimuggova hoti; idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjitvā nimujjati; idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjitvā ṭhito hoti; idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjitvā vipassati viloketi; idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjitvā patarati; idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjitvā patigādhappatto hoti; idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjitvā tiṇṇo hoti pāraṅgato1 thale tiṭṭhati brāhmaṇo.
What seven? One person sinks under once and stays under. One person rises up then sinks under. One person rises up then stays put. One person rises up then sees and discerns. One person rises up then crosses over. One person rises up then finds a footing. One person has risen up, crossed over, and gone beyond, and that brahmin stands on the shore.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो सकिं निमुग्गो निमुग्गोव होति? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो समन्नागतो होति एकन्तकाळकेहि अकुसलेहि धम्मेहि। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो सकिं निमुग्गो निमुग्गोव होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo sakiṁ nimuggo nimuggova hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo samannāgato hoti ekantakāḷakehi akusalehi dhammehi. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo sakiṁ nimuggo nimuggova hoti.
And what kind of person sinks under once and stays under? It’s the kind of person who has exclusively dark, unskillful qualities. This kind of person sinks under once and stays under.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा निमुज्जति? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जति साधु सद्धा कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, साधु हिरी …पे… साधु ओत्तप्पं … साधु वीरियं … साधु पञ्ञा कुसलेसु धम्मेसूति। तस्स सा सद्धा नेव तिट्ठति नो वड्ढति हायतियेव, तस्स सा हिरी …पे… तस्स तं ओत्तप्पं … तस्स तं वीरियं … तस्स सा पञ्ञा नेव तिट्ठति नो वड्ढति हायतियेव। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा निमुज्जति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā nimujjati? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjati sādhu saddhā kusalesu dhammesu, sādhu hirī …pe… sādhu ottappaṁ … sādhu vīriyaṁ … sādhu paññā kusalesu dhammesūti. Tassa sā saddhā neva tiṭṭhati no vaḍḍhati hāyatiyeva, tassa sā hirī …pe… tassa taṁ ottappaṁ … tassa taṁ vīriyaṁ … tassa sā paññā neva tiṭṭhati no vaḍḍhati hāyatiyeva. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā nimujjati.
And what kind of person rises up then sinks under? It’s the kind of person who, rising up, thinks: ‘It’s good to have faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’ However their faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom don’t last or grow, but dwindle away. This kind of person rises up then sinks under.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा ठितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जति साधु सद्धा कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, साधु हिरी …पे… साधु ओत्तप्पं … साधु वीरियं … साधु पञ्ञा कुसलेसु धम्मेसूति। तस्स सा सद्धा नेव हायति नो वड्ढति ठिता होति। तस्स सा हिरी …पे… तस्स तं ओत्तप्पं … तस्स तं वीरियं … तस्स सा पञ्ञा नेव हायति नो वड्ढति ठिता होति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा ठितो होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā ṭhito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjati sādhu saddhā kusalesu dhammesu, sādhu hirī …pe… sādhu ottappaṁ … sādhu vīriyaṁ … sādhu paññā kusalesu dhammesūti. Tassa sā saddhā neva hāyati no vaḍḍhati ṭhitā hoti. Tassa sā hirī …pe… tassa taṁ ottappaṁ … tassa taṁ vīriyaṁ … tassa sā paññā neva hāyati no vaḍḍhati ṭhitā hoti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā ṭhito hoti.
And what kind of person rises up then stays put? It’s the kind of person who, rising up, thinks: ‘It’s good to have faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’ And their faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom lasts, neither dwindling nor growing. This kind of person rises up then stays put.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा विपस्सति विलोकेति? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जति साधु सद्धा कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, साधु हिरी …पे… साधु ओत्तप्पं … साधु वीरियं … साधु पञ्ञा कुसलेसु धम्मेसूति। सो तिण्णं संयोजनानं परिक्खया सोतापन्नो होति अविनिपातधम्मो नियतो सम्बोधिपरायणो। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा विपस्सति विलोकेति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā vipassati viloketi? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjati sādhu saddhā kusalesu dhammesu, sādhu hirī …pe… sādhu ottappaṁ … sādhu vīriyaṁ … sādhu paññā kusalesu dhammesūti. So tiṇṇaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ parikkhayā sotāpanno hoti avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaṇo. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā vipassati viloketi.
And what kind of person rises up then sees and discerns? It’s the kind of person who, rising up, thinks: ‘It’s good to have faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’ With the ending of three fetters they’re a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening. This kind of person rises up then sees and discerns.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा पतरति? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जति साधु सद्धा कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, साधु हिरी …पे… साधु ओत्तप्पं … साधु वीरियं … साधु पञ्ञा कुसलेसु धम्मेसूति। सो तिण्णं संयोजनानं परिक्खया रागदोसमोहानं तनुत्ता सकदागामी होति, सकिदेव इमं लोकं आगन्त्वा दुक्खस्सन्तं करोति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा पतरति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā patarati? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjati sādhu saddhā kusalesu dhammesu, sādhu hirī …pe… sādhu ottappaṁ … sādhu vīriyaṁ … sādhu paññā kusalesu dhammesūti. So tiṇṇaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ parikkhayā rāgadosamohānaṁ tanuttā sakadāgāmī hoti, sakideva2 imaṁ lokaṁ āgantvā dukkhassantaṁ karoti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā patarati.
And what kind of person rises up then crosses over? It’s the kind of person who, rising up, thinks: ‘It’s good to have faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’ With the ending of three fetters, and the weakening of greed, hate, and delusion, they’re a once-returner. They come back to this world once only, then make an end of suffering. This kind of person rises up then crosses over.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा पतिगाधप्पत्तो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जति साधु सद्धा कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, साधु हिरी …पे… साधु ओत्तप्पं … साधु वीरियं … साधु पञ्ञा कुसलेसु धम्मेसूति। सो पञ्चन्नं ओरम्भागियानं संयोजनानं परिक्खया ओपपातिको होति तत्थ परिनिब्बायी अनावत्तिधम्मो तस्मा लोका। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा पतिगाधप्पत्तो होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā patigādhappatto hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjati sādhu saddhā kusalesu dhammesu, sādhu hirī …pe… sādhu ottappaṁ … sādhu vīriyaṁ … sādhu paññā kusalesu dhammesūti. So pañcannaṁ orambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ parikkhayā opapātiko hoti tattha parinibbāyī anāvattidhammo tasmā lokā. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā patigādhappatto hoti.
And what kind of person rises up then finds a footing? It’s the kind of person who, rising up, thinks: ‘It’s good to have faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’ With the ending of the five lower fetters they’re reborn spontaneously. They are extinguished there, and are not liable to return from that world. This kind of person rises up then finds a footing.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा तिण्णो होति पारङ्गतो थले तिट्ठति ब्राह्मणो। इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जति साधु सद्धा कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, साधु हिरी …पे… साधु ओत्तप्पं … साधु वीरियं … साधु पञ्ञा कुसलेसु धम्मेसूति। सो आसवानं खया अनासवं चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो उम्मुज्जित्वा तिण्णो होति पारङ्गतो थले तिट्ठति ब्राह्मणो।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā tiṇṇo hoti pāraṅgato thale tiṭṭhati brāhmaṇo. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjati sādhu saddhā kusalesu dhammesu, sādhu hirī …pe… sādhu ottappaṁ … sādhu vīriyaṁ … sādhu paññā kusalesu dhammesūti. So āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā tiṇṇo hoti pāraṅgato thale tiṭṭhati brāhmaṇo.
And what kind of person has risen up, crossed over, and gone beyond, a brahmin who stands on the shore? It’s the kind of person who, rising up, thinks: ‘It’s good to have faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’ They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. This kind of person has risen up, crossed over, and gone beyond, a brahmin who stands on the shore.
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, सत्त उदकूपमा पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिन्”ति।
Ime kho, bhikkhave, satta udakūpamā puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.
These seven people found in the world are like those in water.”
