Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme. Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā udāyī mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivuto dhammaṁ desento nisinno hoti. Addasā kho āyasmā ānando āyasmantaṁ udāyiṁ mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivutaṁ dhammaṁ desentaṁ nisinnaṁ. Disvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Kosambī, in Ghosita’s Monastery. Now, at that time Venerable Udāyī was sitting teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople. Seeing this, Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“आयस्मा, भन्ते, उदायी महतिया गिहिपरिसाय परिवुतो धम्मं देसेती”ति।
“āyasmā, bhante, udāyī mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivuto dhammaṁ desetī”ti.
“Sir, Venerable Udāyī is teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.”
“न खो, आनन्द, सुकरं परेसं धम्मं देसेतुं। परेसं, आनन्द, धम्मं देसेन्तेन पञ्च धम्मे अज्झत्तं उपट्ठापेत्वा परेसं धम्मो देसेतब्बो। कतमे पञ्च?
“Na kho, ānanda, sukaraṁ paresaṁ dhammaṁ desetuṁ. Paresaṁ, ānanda, dhammaṁ desentena pañca dhamme ajjhattaṁ upaṭṭhāpetvā paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo. Katame pañca?
“Ānanda, it’s not easy to teach Dhamma to others. You should establish five things in yourself before teaching Dhamma to others. What five?
‘अनुपुब्बिं कथं कथेस्सामीऽति परेसं धम्मो देसेतब्बो;
‘Anupubbiṁ kathaṁ1 kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo;
You should teach Dhamma to others thinking: ‘I will teach step by step.’ …
‘परियायदस्सावी कथं कथेस्सामीऽति परेसं धम्मो देसेतब्बो;
‘pariyāyadassāvī kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo;
‘I will teach showing my method.’ …
‘अनुद्दयतं पटिच्च कथं कथेस्सामीऽति परेसं धम्मो देसेतब्बो;
‘anuddayataṁ paṭicca kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo;
‘I will teach out of kindness.’ …
‘न आमिसन्तरो कथं कथेस्सामीऽति परेसं धम्मो देसेतब्बो;
‘na āmisantaro kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo;
‘I will not teach while secretly hoping to profit.’ …
‘अत्तानञ्च परञ्च अनुपहच्च कथं कथेस्सामीऽति परेसं धम्मो देसेतब्बो।
‘attānañca parañca anupahacca kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo.
‘I will teach without hurting myself or others.’
Na kho, ānanda, sukaraṁ paresaṁ dhammaṁ desetuṁ. Paresaṁ, ānanda, dhammaṁ desentena ime pañca dhamme ajjhattaṁ upaṭṭhāpetvā paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo”ti.
It’s not easy to teach Dhamma to others. You should establish these five things in yourself before teaching Dhamma to others.”
