With Uggaha
एकं समयं भगवा भद्दिये विहरति जातिया वने।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā bhaddiye viharati jātiyā vane.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Bhaddiya, in Jātiyā Wood.
अथ खो उग्गहो मेण्डकनत्ता येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो उग्गहो मेण्डकनत्ता भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अधिवासेतु मे, भन्ते, भगवा स्वातनाय अत्तचतुत्थो भत्तन्”ति। अधिवासेसि भगवा तुण्हीभावेन। अथ खो उग्गहो मेण्डकनत्ता भगवतो अधिवासनं विदित्वा उट्ठायासना भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा पदक्खिणं कत्वा पक्कामि।
Atha kho uggaho meṇḍakanattā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho uggaho meṇḍakanattā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “Adhivāsetu me, bhante, bhagavā svātanāya attacatuttho bhattan”ti. Adhivāsesi bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena. Atha kho uggaho meṇḍakanattā bhagavato adhivāsanaṁ viditvā uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi.
Then Uggaha, Meṇḍaka’s grandson, went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, may the Buddha please accept tomorrow’s meal from me, together with three other monks.” The Buddha consented with silence. Then, knowing that the Buddha had consented, Uggaha got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.
अथ खो भगवा तस्सा रत्तिया अच्चयेन पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय येन उग्गहस्स मेण्डकनत्तुनो निवेसनं तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि। अथ खो उग्गहो मेण्डकनत्ता भगवन्तं पणीतेन खादनीयेन भोजनीयेन सहत्था सन्तप्पेसि सम्पवारेसि।
Atha kho bhagavā tassā rattiyā accayena pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena uggahassa meṇḍakanattuno nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Atha kho uggaho meṇḍakanattā bhagavantaṁ paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi.
Then when the night had passed, the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to Uggaha’s home, where he sat on the seat spread out. Then Uggaha served and satisfied the Buddha with his own hands with delicious fresh and cooked foods.
अथ खो उग्गहो मेण्डकनत्ता भगवन्तं भुत्ताविं ओनीतपत्तपाणिं एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो उग्गहो मेण्डकनत्ता भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “इमा मे, भन्ते, कुमारियो पतिकुलानि गमिस्सन्ति। ओवदतु तासं, भन्ते, भगवा; अनुसासतु तासं, भन्ते, भगवा, यं तासं अस्स दीघरत्तं हिताय सुखाया”ति।
Atha kho uggaho meṇḍakanattā bhagavantaṁ bhuttāviṁ onītapattapāṇiṁ ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho uggaho meṇḍakanattā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “imā me, bhante, kumāriyo patikulāni gamissanti. Ovadatu tāsaṁ, bhante, bhagavā; anusāsatu tāsaṁ, bhante, bhagavā, yaṁ tāsaṁ assa dīgharattaṁ hitāya sukhāyā”ti.
When the Buddha had eaten and washed his hand and bowl, Uggaha sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, these girls of mine will be going to their husbands’ families. May the Buddha please advise and instruct them. It will be for their lasting welfare and happiness.”
अथ खो भगवा ता कुमारियो एतदवोच:
Atha kho bhagavā tā kumāriyo etadavoca:
Then the Buddha said to those girls:
“तस्मातिह, कुमारियो, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘यस्स वो मातापितरो भत्तुनो दस्सन्ति अत्थकामा हितेसिनो अनुकम्पका अनुकम्पं उपादाय, तस्स भविस्साम पुब्बुट्ठायिनियो पच्छानिपातिनियो किङ्कारपटिस्साविनियो मनापचारिनियो पियवादिनियोऽति। एवञ्हि वो, कुमारियो, सिक्खितब्बं।
“tasmātiha, kumāriyo, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘yassa vo1 mātāpitaro bhattuno dassanti atthakāmā hitesino anukampakā anukampaṁ upādāya, tassa bhavissāma pubbuṭṭhāyiniyo pacchānipātiniyo kiṅkārapaṭissāviniyo manāpacāriniyo piyavādiniyo’ti. Evañhi vo, kumāriyo, sikkhitabbaṁ.
“So, girls, you should train like this: ‘Our parents will give us to a husband wanting what’s best, out of kindness and compassion. We will get up before him and go to bed after him, and be obliging, behaving nicely and speaking politely.’ That’s how you should train.
तस्मातिह, कुमारियो, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘ये ते भत्तु गरुनो भविस्सन्ति माताति वा पिताति वा समणब्राह्मणाति वा, ते सक्करिस्साम गरुं करिस्साम मानेस्साम पूजेस्साम अब्भागते च आसनोदकेन पटिपूजेस्सामाऽति। एवञ्हि वो, कुमारियो, सिक्खितब्बं।
Tasmātiha, kumāriyo, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘ye te bhattu garuno2 bhavissanti mātāti vā pitāti vā samaṇabrāhmaṇāti vā, te sakkarissāma garuṁ karissāma3 mānessāma pūjessāma abbhāgate ca āsanodakena paṭipūjessāmā’ti. Evañhi vo, kumāriyo, sikkhitabbaṁ.
So, girls, you should train like this: ‘Those our husband respects—mother and father, ascetics and brahmins—we will honor, respect, revere, and venerate, and serve with a seat and a drink when they come as guests.’ That’s how you should train.
तस्मातिह, कुमारियो, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘ये ते भत्तु अब्भन्तरा कम्मन्ता उण्णाति वा कप्पासाति वा, तत्थ दक्खा भविस्साम अनलसा, तत्रुपायाय वीमंसाय समन्नागता, अलं कातुं अलं संविधातुन्ऽति। एवञ्हि वो, कुमारियो, सिक्खितब्बं।
Tasmātiha, kumāriyo, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘ye te bhattu abbhantarā kammantā uṇṇāti vā kappāsāti vā, tattha dakkhā bhavissāma analasā, tatrupāyāya vīmaṁsāya samannāgatā, alaṁ kātuṁ alaṁ saṁvidhātun’ti. Evañhi vo, kumāriyo, sikkhitabbaṁ.
So, girls, you should train like this: ‘We will be deft and tireless in doing domestic duties for our husband, such as knitting and sewing. We will have an understanding of how to go about things in order to complete and organize the work.’ That’s how you should train.
तस्मातिह, कुमारियो, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘यो सो भत्तु अब्भन्तरो अन्तोजनो दासाति वा पेस्साति वा कम्मकराति वा, तेसं कतञ्च कततो जानिस्साम अकतञ्च अकततो जानिस्साम, गिलानकानञ्च बलाबलं जानिस्साम, खादनीयं भोजनीयञ्चस्स पच्चंसेन संविभजिस्सामाऽति। एवञ्हि वो, कुमारियो, सिक्खितब्बं।
Tasmātiha, kumāriyo, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘yo so bhattu abbhantaro4 antojano dāsāti vā pessāti vā kammakarāti vā, tesaṁ katañca katato jānissāma akatañca akatato jānissāma, gilānakānañca balābalaṁ jānissāma, khādanīyaṁ bhojanīyañcassa paccaṁsena5 saṁvibhajissāmā’ti. Evañhi vo, kumāriyo, sikkhitabbaṁ.
So, girls, you should train like this: ‘We will know what work our husband’s domestic bondservants, employees, and workers have completed, and what they’ve left incomplete. We will know who is sick, and who is fit or unwell. We will distribute to each a fair portion of fresh and cooked foods.’ That’s how you should train.
तस्मातिह, कुमारियो, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘यं भत्ता आहरिस्सति धनं वा धञ्ञं वा रजतं वा जातरूपं वा, तं आरक्खेन गुत्तिया सम्पादेस्साम, तत्थ च भविस्साम अधुत्ती अथेनी असोण्डी अविनासिकायोऽति। एवञ्हि वो, कुमारियो, सिक्खितब्बं। इमेहि खो, कुमारियो, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो मातुगामो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा मनापकायिकानं देवानं सहब्यतं उपपज्जतीति।
Tasmātiha, kumāriyo, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘yaṁ bhattā āharissati dhanaṁ vā dhaññaṁ vā rajataṁ vā jātarūpaṁ vā, taṁ ārakkhena guttiyā sampādessāma, tattha ca bhavissāma adhuttī athenī asoṇḍī avināsikāyo’ti. Evañhi vo, kumāriyo, sikkhitabbaṁ. Imehi kho, kumāriyo, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato mātugāmo kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā manāpakāyikānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjatīti.
So, girls, you should train like this: ‘We will ensure that any income our husbands earn is guarded and protected, whether money, grain, silver, or gold. We will not overspend, steal, waste, or lose it.’ That’s how you should train. When they have these five qualities, females—when their body breaks up, after death—are reborn in company with the Gods of the Lovable Host.
यो नं भरति सब्बदा, निच्चं आतापि उस्सुको; सब्बकामहरं पोसं, भत्तारं नातिमञ्ञति।
Yo naṁ bharati sabbadā, niccaṁ ātāpi ussuko; Sabbakāmaharaṁ posaṁ, bhattāraṁ nātimaññati.
She’d never look down on her husband, who’s always eager to work hard, always looking after her, and bringing whatever she wants.
न चापि सोत्थि भत्तारं, इस्साचारेन रोसये; भत्तु च गरुनो सब्बे, पटिपूजेति पण्डिता।
Na cāpi sotthi bhattāraṁ, issācārena6 rosaye; Bhattu ca garuno sabbe, paṭipūjeti paṇḍitā.
And a good woman never scolds her husband with jealous words. Being astute, she reveres those respected by her husband.
उट्ठाहिका अनलसा, सङ्गहितपरिज्जना; भत्तु मनापं चरति, सम्भतं अनुरक्खति।
She gets up early, works tirelessly, and manages the domestic help. She’s lovable to her husband, and preserves his wealth.
या एवं वत्तती नारी, भत्तुछन्दवसानुगा; मनापा नाम ते देवा, यत्थ सा उपपज्जती”ति।
Yā evaṁ vattatī nārī, bhattuchandavasānugā; Manāpā nāma te devā, yattha sā upapajjatī”ti.
A lady who fulfills these duties according to her husband’s desire, is reborn among the gods called ‘Lovable’.”
