    अथ खो अञ्ञतरो भिक्खु येन सको उपज्झायो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा सकं उपज्झायं एतदवोच: “एतरहि मे, भन्ते, मधुरकजातो चेव कायो, दिसा च मे न पक्खायन्ति, धम्मा च मं नप्पटिभन्ति, थिनमिद्धञ्च मे चित्तं परियादाय तिट्ठति, अनभिरतो च ब्रह्मचरियं चरामि, अत्थि च मे धम्मेसु विचिकिच्छा”ति।

    Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena sako upajjhāyo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā sakaṁ upajjhāyaṁ etadavoca: “etarahi me, bhante, madhurakajāto ceva kāyo, disā ca me na pakkhāyanti, dhammā ca maṁ nappaṭibhanti, thinamiddhañca me cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati, anabhirato ca brahmacariyaṁ carāmi, atthi ca me dhammesu vicikicchā”ti.

    Then a bhikkhu went up to his own mentor, and said, “Now, sir, my body feels like it’s drugged. I’m disorientated, the teachings don’t spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness fill my mind. I lead the spiritual life dissatisfied, and have doubts about the teachings.”

    अथ खो सो भिक्खु तं सद्धिविहारिकं भिक्खुं आदाय येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो सो भिक्खु भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अयं, भन्ते, भिक्खु एवमाह: ‘एतरहि मे, भन्ते, मधुरकजातो चेव कायो, दिसा च मं न पक्खायन्ति, धम्मा च मे नप्पटिभन्ति, थिनमिद्धञ्च मे चित्तं परियादाय तिट्ठति, अनभिरतो च ब्रह्मचरियं चरामि, अत्थि च मे धम्मेसु विचिकिच्छाऽ”ति।

    Atha kho so bhikkhu taṁ saddhivihārikaṁ bhikkhuṁ ādāya yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “ayaṁ, bhante, bhikkhu evamāha: ‘etarahi me, bhante, madhurakajāto ceva kāyo, disā ca maṁ na pakkhāyanti, dhammā ca me nappaṭibhanti, thinamiddhañca me cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati, anabhirato ca brahmacariyaṁ carāmi, atthi ca me dhammesu vicikicchā’”ti.

    Then that bhikkhu took his pupil to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, this bhikkhu says this: ‘Now, sir, my body feels like it’s drugged. I’m disorientated, the teachings don’t spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness fill my mind. I lead the spiritual life dissatisfied, and have doubts about the teachings.’”

    “एवञ्हेतं, भिक्खु, होति इन्द्रियेसु अगुत्तद्वारस्स, भोजने अमत्तञ्ञुनो, जागरियं अननुयुत्तस्स, अविपस्सकस्स कुसलानं धम्मानं, पुब्बरत्तापररत्तं बोधिपक्खियानं धम्मानं भावनानुयोगं अननुयुत्तस्स विहरतो, यं मधुरकजातो चेव कायो होति, दिसा चस्स न पक्खायन्ति, धम्मा च तं नप्पटिभन्ति, थिनमिद्धञ्चस्स चित्तं परियादाय तिट्ठति, अनभिरतो च ब्रह्मचरियं चरति, होति चस्स धम्मेसु विचिकिच्छा।

    “Evañhetaṁ, bhikkhu, hoti indriyesu aguttadvārassa, bhojane amattaññuno, jāgariyaṁ ananuyuttassa, avipassakassa kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ, pubbarattāpararattaṁ bodhipakkhiyānaṁ dhammānaṁ bhāvanānuyogaṁ ananuyuttassa viharato, yaṁ madhurakajāto ceva kāyo hoti, disā cassa na pakkhāyanti, dhammā ca taṁ nappaṭibhanti, thinamiddhañcassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati, anabhirato ca brahmacariyaṁ carati, hoti cassa dhammesu vicikicchā.

    “That’s how it is, bhikkhu, when your sense doors are unguarded, you eat too much, you’re not dedicated to wakefulness, you’re unable to discern skillful qualities, and you don’t pursue the development of the qualities that lead to awakening in the evening and toward dawn. Your body feels like it’s drugged. You’re disorientated, the teachings don’t spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness fill your mind. You lead the spiritual life dissatisfied, and have doubts about the teachings.

    तस्मातिह ते, भिक्खु, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘इन्द्रियेसु गुत्तद्वारो भविस्सामि, भोजने मत्तञ्ञू, जागरियं अनुयुत्तो, विपस्सको कुसलानं धम्मानं, पुब्बरत्तापररत्तं बोधिपक्खियानं धम्मानं भावनानुयोगं अनुयुत्तो विहरिस्सामीऽति। एवञ्हि ते, भिक्खु, सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।

    Tasmātiha te, bhikkhu, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘indriyesu guttadvāro bhavissāmi, bhojane mattaññū, jāgariyaṁ anuyutto, vipassako kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ, pubbarattāpararattaṁ bodhipakkhiyānaṁ dhammānaṁ bhāvanānuyogaṁ anuyutto viharissāmī’ti. Evañhi te, bhikkhu, sikkhitabban”ti.

    So you should train like this: ‘I will guard my sense doors, eat in moderation, be dedicated to wakefulness, discern skillful qualities, and pursue the development of the qualities that lead to awakening in the evening and toward dawn.’ That’s how you should train.”

    अथ खो सो भिक्खु भगवता इमिना ओवादेन ओवदितो उट्ठायासना भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा पदक्खिणं कत्वा पक्कामि।

    Atha kho so bhikkhu bhagavatā iminā ovādena ovadito uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi.

    When that bhikkhu had been given this advice by the Buddha, he got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.

    अथ खो सो भिक्खु एको वूपकट्ठो अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरन्तो नचिरस्सेव—यस्सत्थाय कुलपुत्ता सम्मदेव अगारस्मा अनगारियं पब्बजन्ति, तदनुत्तरं—ब्रह्मचरियपरियोसानं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहासि।

    Atha kho so bhikkhu eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi.

    Then that bhikkhu, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

    “खीणा जाति, वुसितं ब्रह्मचरियं, कतं करणीयं, नापरं इत्थत्ताया”ति अब्भञ्ञासि। अञ्ञतरो पन सो भिक्खु अरहतं अहोसि।

    “Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā”ti abbhaññāsi. Aññataro pana so bhikkhu arahataṁ ahosi.

    He understood: “Rebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is no return to any state of existence.” And that bhikkhu became one of the perfected.

    अथ खो सो भिक्खु अरहत्तं पत्तो येन सको उपज्झायो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा सकं उपज्झायं एतदवोच: “एतरहि मे, भन्ते, न चेव मधुरकजातो कायो, दिसा च मे पक्खायन्ति, धम्मा च मं पटिभन्ति, थिनमिद्धञ्च मे चित्तं न परियादाय तिट्ठति, अभिरतो च ब्रह्मचरियं चरामि, नत्थि च मे धम्मेसु विचिकिच्छा”ति।

    Atha kho so bhikkhu arahattaṁ patto1 yena sako upajjhāyo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā sakaṁ upajjhāyaṁ etadavoca: “etarahi me, bhante, na ceva2 madhurakajāto kāyo, disā ca me pakkhāyanti, dhammā ca maṁ paṭibhanti, thinamiddhañca me cittaṁ na pariyādāya tiṭṭhati, abhirato ca brahmacariyaṁ carāmi, natthi ca me dhammesu vicikicchā”ti.

    When that bhikkhu had attained perfection, he went up to his own mentor, and said, “Now, sir, my body doesn’t feel like it’s drugged. I’m not disorientated, the teachings spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness don’t fill my mind. I lead the spiritual life satisfied, and have no doubts about the teachings.”

    “That’s how it is, bhikkhu, when your sense doors are guarded, you’re moderate in eating, you’re dedicated to wakefulness, you’re able to discern skillful qualities, and you pursue the development of the qualities that lead to awakening in the evening and toward dawn. Your body doesn’t feel like it’s drugged. You’re not disorientated, the teachings spring to mind, and dullness and drowsiness don’t fill your mind. You lead the spiritual life satisfied, and have no doubts about the teachings.

    तस्मातिह वो, भिक्खवे, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘इन्द्रियेसु गुत्तद्वारा भविस्साम, भोजने मत्तञ्ञुनो, जागरियं अनुयुत्ता, विपस्सका कुसलानं धम्मानं, पुब्बरत्तापररत्तं बोधिपक्खियानं धम्मानं भावनानुयोगं अनुयुत्ता विहरिस्सामाऽति। एवञ्हि वो, भिक्खवे, सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।

    So you should train like this: ‘We will guard our sense doors, eat in moderation, be dedicated to wakefulness, discern skillful qualities, and pursue the development of the qualities that lead to awakening in the evening and toward dawn.’ That’s how you should train.”
