Uṭṭhānaphalasutta
The Fruits of Initiative
“चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे चत्तारो?
“Cattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame cattāro?
“These four people are found in the world. What four?
उट्ठानफलूपजीवी न कम्मफलूपजीवी,
Uṭṭhānaphalūpajīvī na kammaphalūpajīvī,
One who lives off the fruit of initiative, but not deeds;
कम्मफलूपजीवी न उट्ठानफलूपजीवी,
kammaphalūpajīvī na uṭṭhānaphalūpajīvī,
one who lives off the fruit of deeds, but not initiative;
उट्ठानफलूपजीवी चेव कम्मफलूपजीवी च,
uṭṭhānaphalūpajīvī ceva kammaphalūpajīvī ca,
one who lives off the fruit of both deeds and initiative;
नेव उट्ठानफलूपजीवी न कम्मफलूपजीवी—
neva uṭṭhānaphalūpajīvī na kammaphalūpajīvī—
one who lives off the fruit of neither initiative nor deeds.
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिन्”ति।
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.
These are the four people found in the world.”
