    अथ खो वच्छगोत्तो परिब्बाजको येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो वच्छगोत्तो परिब्बाजको भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Atha kho vacchagotto1 paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Then the wanderer Vacchagotta went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

    “सुतं मेतं, भो गोतम, समणो गोतमो एवमाह: ‘मय्हमेव दानं दातब्बं, नाञ्ञेसं दानं दातब्बं; मय्हमेव सावकानं दानं दातब्बं, नाञ्ञेसं सावकानं दानं दातब्बं; मय्हमेव दिन्नं महप्फलं, नाञ्ञेसं दिन्नं महप्फलं; मय्हमेव सावकानं दिन्नं महप्फलं, नाञ्ञेसं सावकानं दिन्नं महप्फलन्ऽति। ये ते, भो गोतम, एवमाहंसु ‘समणो गोतमो एवमाह: “मय्हमेव दानं दातब्बं, नाञ्ञेसं दानं दातब्बं। मय्हमेव सावकानं दानं दातब्बं, नाञ्ञेसं सावकानं दानं दातब्बं। मय्हमेव दिन्नं महप्फलं, नाञ्ञेसं दिन्नं महप्फलं। मय्हमेव सावकानं दिन्नं महप्फलं, नाञ्ञेसं सावकानं दिन्नं महप्फलन्”ऽति।

    “sutaṁ metaṁ, bho gotama, samaṇo gotamo evamāha: ‘mayhameva dānaṁ dātabbaṁ, nāññesaṁ dānaṁ dātabbaṁ; mayhameva sāvakānaṁ dānaṁ dātabbaṁ, nāññesaṁ sāvakānaṁ dānaṁ dātabbaṁ; mayhameva dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ, nāññesaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ; mayhameva sāvakānaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ, nāññesaṁ sāvakānaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalan’ti. Ye te, bho gotama, evamāhaṁsu ‘samaṇo gotamo evamāha: “mayhameva dānaṁ dātabbaṁ, nāññesaṁ dānaṁ dātabbaṁ. Mayhameva sāvakānaṁ dānaṁ dātabbaṁ, nāññesaṁ sāvakānaṁ dānaṁ dātabbaṁ. Mayhameva dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ, nāññesaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ. Mayhameva sāvakānaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ, nāññesaṁ sāvakānaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalan”’ti.

    “I have heard, Master Gotama, that the ascetic Gotama says this: ‘Gifts should only be given to me, not to others. Gifts should only be given to my disciples, not to the disciples of others. Only what is given to me is very fruitful, not what is given to others. Only what is given to my disciples is very fruitful, not what is given to the disciples of others.’

    कच्चि ते भोतो गोतमस्स वुत्तवादिनो न च भवन्तं गोतमं अभूतेन अब्भाचिक्खन्ति, धम्मस्स चानुधम्मं ब्याकरोन्ति, न च कोचि सहधम्मिको वादानुपातो गारय्हं ठानं आगच्छति? अनब्भक्खातुकामा हि मयं भवन्तं गोतमन्”ति।

    Kacci te bhoto gotamassa vuttavādino na ca bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ abhūtena abbhācikkhanti, dhammassa cānudhammaṁ byākaronti, na ca koci sahadhammiko vādānupāto2 gārayhaṁ ṭhānaṁ āgacchati? Anabbhakkhātukāmā hi mayaṁ bhavantaṁ gotaman”ti.

    I trust that those who say this repeat what the Buddha has said, and do not misrepresent him with an untruth? Is their explanation in line with the teaching? Are there any legitimate grounds for rebuke and criticism? For we don’t want to misrepresent Master Gotama.”

    “ये ते, वच्छ, एवमाहंसु: ‘समणो गोतमो एवमाह: “मय्हमेव दानं दातब्बं …पे… नाञ्ञेसं सावकानं दिन्नं महप्फलन्”ऽति न मे ते वुत्तवादिनो। अब्भाचिक्खन्ति च पन मं असता अभूतेन।

    “Ye te, vaccha, evamāhaṁsu: ‘samaṇo gotamo evamāha: “mayhameva dānaṁ dātabbaṁ …pe… nāññesaṁ sāvakānaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalan”’ti na me te vuttavādino. Abbhācikkhanti ca pana maṁ3 asatā abhūtena.

    “Vaccha, those who say this do not repeat what I have said. They misrepresent me with what is false and untrue.

    यो खो, वच्छ, परं दानं ददन्तं वारेति सो तिण्णं अन्तरायकरो होति, तिण्णं पारिपन्थिको। कतमेसं तिण्णं? दायकस्स पुञ्ञन्तरायकरो होति, पटिग्गाहकानं लाभन्तरायकरो होति, पुब्बेव खो पनस्स अत्ता खतो च होति उपहतो च। यो खो, वच्छ, परं दानं ददन्तं वारेति सो इमेसं तिण्णं अन्तरायकरो होति, तिण्णं पारिपन्थिको।

    Yo kho, vaccha, paraṁ dānaṁ dadantaṁ vāreti so tiṇṇaṁ antarāyakaro hoti, tiṇṇaṁ pāripanthiko. Katamesaṁ tiṇṇaṁ? Dāyakassa puññantarāyakaro hoti, paṭiggāhakānaṁ lābhantarāyakaro hoti, pubbeva kho panassa attā khato ca hoti upahato ca. Yo kho, vaccha, paraṁ dānaṁ dadantaṁ vāreti so imesaṁ tiṇṇaṁ antarāyakaro hoti, tiṇṇaṁ pāripanthiko.

    Anyone who prevents another from giving makes an obstacle and a barrier for three people. What three? The giver is obstructed from making merit. The receiver is obstructed from getting what is offered. And they’ve already broken and damaged themselves. Anyone who prevents another from giving makes an obstacle and a barrier for these three people.

    अहं खो पन, वच्छ, एवं वदामि: ‘ये हि ते चन्दनिकाय वा ओलिगल्ले वा पाणा, तत्रपि यो थालिधोवनं वा सरावधोवनं वा छड्डेति: “ये तत्थ पाणा ते तेन यापेन्तू”ऽति, ततो निदानम्पाहं, वच्छ, पुञ्ञस्स आगमं वदामि। को पन वादो मनुस्सभूते।

    Ahaṁ kho pana, vaccha, evaṁ vadāmi: ‘ye hi te candanikāya vā oligalle vā pāṇā, tatrapi yo thālidhovanaṁ4 vā sarāvadhovanaṁ vā chaḍḍeti: “ye tattha pāṇā te tena yāpentū”’ti, tato nidānampāhaṁ, vaccha, puññassa āgamaṁ vadāmi. Ko pana vādo manussabhūte.

    Vaccha, this is what I say: ‘You even make merit by tipping out dish-washing water in a cesspool or a sump with living creatures in it, thinking, “May any creatures here be nourished!”’ How much more then for human beings!

    अपि चाहं, वच्छ, सीलवतो दिन्नं महप्फलं वदामि, नो तथा दुस्सीलस्स, सो च होति पञ्चङ्गविप्पहीनो पञ्चङ्गसमन्नागतो।

    Api cāhaṁ, vaccha, sīlavato dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ vadāmi, no tathā dussīlassa, so ca hoti pañcaṅgavippahīno pañcaṅgasamannāgato.

    However, I also say that a gift to an ethical person is more fruitful than one to an unethical person. They’ve given up five factors, and possess five factors.

    कतमानि पञ्चङ्गानि पहीनानि होन्ति? कामच्छन्दो पहीनो होति, ब्यापादो पहीनो होति, थिनमिद्धं पहीनं होति, उद्धच्चकुक्कुच्चं पहीनं होति, विचिकिच्छा पहीना होति। इमानि पञ्चङ्गानि विप्पहीनानि होन्ति।

    Katamāni pañcaṅgāni pahīnāni honti? Kāmacchando pahīno hoti, byāpādo pahīno hoti, thinamiddhaṁ pahīnaṁ hoti, uddhaccakukkuccaṁ pahīnaṁ hoti, vicikicchā pahīnā hoti. Imāni pañcaṅgāni vippahīnāni honti.

    What are the five factors they’ve given up? Sensual desire, ill will, dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt. These are the five factors they’ve given up.

    कतमेहि पञ्चहि अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो होति? असेक्खेन सीलक्खन्धेन समन्नागतो होति, असेक्खेन समाधिक्खन्धेन समन्नागतो होति, असेक्खेन पञ्ञाक्खन्धेन समन्नागतो होति, असेक्खेन विमुत्तिक्खन्धेन समन्नागतो होति, असेक्खेन विमुत्तिञाणदस्सनक्खन्धेन समन्नागतो होति; इमेहि पञ्चहि अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो होति।

    Katamehi pañcahi aṅgehi samannāgato hoti? Asekkhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena samādhikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena paññākkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena vimuttikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti; imehi pañcahi aṅgehi samannāgato hoti.

    What are the five factors they possess? The entire spectrum of an adept’s ethics, immersion, wisdom, freedom, and knowledge and vision of freedom. These are the five factors they possess.

    इति पञ्चङ्गविप्पहीने पञ्चङ्गसमन्नागते दिन्नं महप्फलन्ति वदामीति।

    Iti pañcaṅgavippahīne pañcaṅgasamannāgate dinnaṁ mahapphalanti vadāmīti.

    I say that a gift to anyone who has given up these five factors and possesses these five factors is very fruitful.

    इति कण्हासु सेतासु, रोहिणीसु हरीसु वा; कम्मासासु सरूपासु, गोसु पारेवतासु वा।

    Iti kaṇhāsu setāsu, rohiṇīsu harīsu vā; Kammāsāsu sarūpāsu, gosu pārevatāsu vā.

    Cows may be black or white, red or tawny, mottled or uniform, or pigeon-colored.

    यासु कासुचि एतासु, दन्तो जायति पुङ्गवो; धोरय्हो बलसम्पन्नो, कल्याणजवनिक्कमो; तमेव भारे युञ्जन्ति, नास्स वण्णं परिक्खरे।

    Yāsu kāsuci etāsu, danto jāyati puṅgavo; Dhorayho balasampanno, kalyāṇajavanikkamo; Tameva bhāre yuñjanti, nāssa vaṇṇaṁ parikkhare.

    But when one is born among them, the bull that’s tamed—a behemoth, powerful, well-paced in pulling forward—they yoke the load just to him, regardless of his color.

    एवमेवं मनुस्सेसु, यस्मिं कस्मिञ्चि जातिये; खत्तिये ब्राह्मणे वेस्से, सुद्दे चण्डालपुक्कुसे।

    Evamevaṁ manussesu, yasmiṁ kasmiñci jātiye; Khattiye brāhmaṇe vesse, sudde caṇḍālapukkuse.

    So it is for humans, wherever they may be born—among aristocrats, brahmins, peasants, menials, or outcastes and scavengers—

    यासु कासुचि एतासु, दन्तो जायति सुब्बतो; धम्मट्ठो सीलसम्पन्नो, सच्चवादी हिरीमनो।

    Yāsu kāsuci etāsu, danto jāyati subbato; Dhammaṭṭho sīlasampanno, saccavādī hirīmano.

    one is born among them, tamed, true to their vows. Firm in principle, accomplished in ethical conduct, truthful, conscientious,

    पहीनजातिमरणो, ब्रह्मचरियस्स केवली; पन्नभारो विसंयुत्तो, कतकिच्चो अनासवो।

    Pahīnajātimaraṇo, brahmacariyassa kevalī; Pannabhāro visaṁyutto, katakicco anāsavo.

    they’ve given up birth and death. Complete in the spiritual journey, with burden put down, detached, they’ve completed the task and are free of defilements.

    पारगू सब्बधम्मानं, अनुपादाय निब्बुतो; तस्मिंयेव विरजे खेत्ते, विपुला होति दक्खिणा।

    Pāragū sabbadhammānaṁ, anupādāya nibbuto; Tasmiṁyeva5 viraje khette, vipulā hoti dakkhiṇā.

    Gone beyond all things, they’re extinguished by not grasping. In that flawless field, a religious donation is abundant.

    बाला च अविजानन्ता, दुम्मेधा अस्सुताविनो; बहिद्धा देन्ति दानानि, न हि सन्ते उपासरे।

    Bālā ca avijānantā, dummedhā assutāvino; Bahiddhā denti dānāni, na hi sante upāsare.

    Fools who don’t understand—stupid, unlearned—give their gifts to those outside, and don’t attend the peaceful ones.

    ये च सन्ते उपासन्ति, सप्पञ्ञे धीरसम्मते; सद्धा च नेसं सुगते, मूलजाता पतिट्ठिता।

    Ye ca sante upāsanti, sappaññe dhīrasammate; Saddhā ca nesaṁ sugate, mūlajātā patiṭṭhitā.

    But those who do attend the peaceful ones—wise, esteemed as sages—and whose faith in the Holy One has roots planted deep,

    देवलोकञ्च ते यन्ति, कुले वा इध जायरे; अनुपुब्बेन निब्बानं, अधिगच्छन्ति पण्डिता”ति।

    Devalokañca te yanti, kule vā idha jāyare; Anupubbena nibbānaṁ, adhigacchanti paṇḍitā”ti.

    they go to the realm of the gods, or are born here in a good family. Gradually those astute ones reach Nibbana.”

    सत्तमं।
