    Like Diamond

    “तयोमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे तयो? अरुकूपमचित्तो पुग्गलो, विज्जूपमचित्तो पुग्गलो, वजिरूपमचित्तो पुग्गलो।

    “Tayome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame tayo? Arukūpamacitto puggalo, vijjūpamacitto puggalo, vajirūpamacitto puggalo.

    “These three people are found in the world. What three? A person with a mind like an open sore, a person with a mind like lightning, and a person with a mind like diamond.

    कतमो च, भिक्खवे, अरुकूपमचित्तो पुग्गलो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो कोधनो होति उपायासबहुलो अप्पम्पि वुत्तो समानो अभिसज्जति कुप्पति ब्यापज्जति पतित्थीयति कोपञ्च दोसञ्च अप्पच्चयञ्च पातुकरोति। सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, दुट्ठारुको कट्ठेन वा कठलाय वा घट्टितो भिय्योसो मत्ताय आसवं देति; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुग्गलो कोधनो होति उपायासबहुलो अप्पम्पि वुत्तो समानो अभिसज्जति कुप्पति ब्यापज्जति पतित्थीयति कोपञ्च दोसञ्च अप्पच्चयञ्च पातुकरोति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, अरुकूपमचित्तो पुग्गलो।

    Katamo ca, bhikkhave, arukūpamacitto puggalo? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo kodhano hoti upāyāsabahulo appampi vutto samāno abhisajjati kuppati byāpajjati patitthīyati kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, duṭṭhāruko1 kaṭṭhena vā kaṭhalāya vā ghaṭṭito bhiyyoso mattāya āsavaṁ deti; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo kodhano hoti upāyāsabahulo appampi vutto samāno abhisajjati kuppati byāpajjati patitthīyati kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, arukūpamacitto puggalo.

    And who has a mind like an open sore? It’s someone who is irritable and bad-tempered. Even when lightly criticized they lose their temper, becoming annoyed, hostile, and hard-hearted, and they display annoyance, hate, and bitterness. They’re like a festering sore, which, when you hit it with a stick or a stone, discharges even more. In the same way, someone is irritable and bad-tempered.     कतमो च, भिक्खवे, विज्जूपमचित्तो पुग्गलो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति, ‘अयं दुक्खसमुदयोऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति, ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधोऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति, ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति। सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, चक्खुमा पुरिसो रत्तन्धकारतिमिसायं विज्जन्तरिकाय रूपानि पस्सेय्य; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुग्गलो ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, विज्जूपमचित्तो पुग्गलो।

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, cakkhumā puriso rattandhakāratimisāyaṁ vijjantarikāya rūpāni passeyya; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vijjūpamacitto puggalo.

    And who has a mind like lightning? It’s someone who truly understands: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’. They’re like a person with keen eyes in the dark of the night, who sees by a flash of lightning. In the same way, someone truly understands: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’. This is called a person with a mind like lightning.

    कतमो च, भिक्खवे, वजिरूपमचित्तो पुग्गलो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो आसवानं खया अनासवं चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, वजिरस्स नत्थि किञ्चि अभेज्जं मणि वा पासाणो वा; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुग्गलो आसवानं खया …पे… उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, वजिरूपमचित्तो पुग्गलो।

    Katamo ca, bhikkhave, vajirūpamacitto puggalo? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, vajirassa natthi kiñci abhejjaṁ maṇi vā pāsāṇo vā; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo āsavānaṁ khayā …pe… upasampajja viharati. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vajirūpamacitto puggalo.

    And who has a mind like diamond? It’s someone who realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. It’s like a diamond, which can’t be cut by anything at all, not even a gem or a stone. In the same way, someone realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. … This is called a person with a mind like diamond.

    इमे खो, भिक्खवे, तयो पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिन्”ति।

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.

    These are the three people found in the world.”

    पञ्चमं।
