Emetic
“तिकिच्छका, भिक्खवे, वमनं देन्ति पित्तसमुट्ठानानम्पि आबाधानं पटिघाताय, सेम्हसमुट्ठानानम्पि आबाधानं पटिघाताय, वातसमुट्ठानानम्पि आबाधानं पटिघाताय। अत्थेतं, भिक्खवे, वमनं; ‘नेतं नत्थीऽति वदामि। तञ्च खो एतं, भिक्खवे, वमनं सम्पज्जतिपि विपज्जतिपि।
“Tikicchakā, bhikkhave, vamanaṁ denti pittasamuṭṭhānānampi ābādhānaṁ paṭighātāya, semhasamuṭṭhānānampi ābādhānaṁ paṭighātāya, vātasamuṭṭhānānampi ābādhānaṁ paṭighātāya. Atthetaṁ, bhikkhave, vamanaṁ; ‘netaṁ natthī’ti vadāmi. Tañca kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, vamanaṁ sampajjatipi vipajjatipi.
“Bhikkhus, doctors prescribe an emetic for eliminating illnesses stemming from disorders of bile, phlegm, and wind. There is such an emetic, I don’t deny it. But this kind of emetic sometimes works and sometimes fails.
अहञ्च खो, भिक्खवे, अरियं वमनं देसेस्सामि, यं वमनं सम्पज्जतियेव नो विपज्जति, यं वमनं आगम्म जातिधम्मा सत्ता जातिया परिमुच्चन्ति, जराधम्मा सत्ता जराय परिमुच्चन्ति, मरणधम्मा सत्ता मरणेन परिमुच्चन्ति, सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासधम्मा सत्ता सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासेहि परिमुच्चन्ति। तं सुणाथ …पे…।
Ahañca kho, bhikkhave, ariyaṁ vamanaṁ desessāmi, yaṁ vamanaṁ sampajjatiyeva no vipajjati, yaṁ vamanaṁ āgamma jātidhammā sattā jātiyā parimuccanti, jarādhammā sattā jarāya parimuccanti, maraṇadhammā sattā maraṇena parimuccanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsadhammā sattā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsehi parimuccanti. And what is that noble emetic that works without fail?
सम्मादिट्ठिकस्स, भिक्खवे, मिच्छादिट्ठि वन्ता होति; ये च मिच्छादिट्ठिपच्चया अनेके पापका अकुसला धम्मा सम्भवन्ति ते चस्स वन्ता होन्ति; सम्मादिट्ठिपच्चया च अनेके कुसला धम्मा भावनापारिपूरिं गच्छन्ति।
Sammādiṭṭhikassa, bhikkhave, micchādiṭṭhi vantā hoti; ye ca micchādiṭṭhipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa vantā honti; sammādiṭṭhipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti.
For one of right view, wrong view is vomited up. And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by wrong view are vomited up. And because of right view, many skillful qualities are fully developed.
सम्मासङ्कप्पस्स, भिक्खवे, मिच्छासङ्कप्पो वन्तो होति …पे… सम्मावाचस्स, भिक्खवे, मिच्छावाचा वन्ता होति … सम्माकम्मन्तस्स, भिक्खवे, मिच्छाकम्मन्तो वन्तो होति … सम्माआजीवस्स, भिक्खवे, मिच्छाआजीवो वन्तो होति … सम्मावायामस्स, भिक्खवे, मिच्छावायामो वन्तो होति … सम्मासतिस्स, भिक्खवे, मिच्छासति वन्ता होति … सम्मासमाधिस्स, भिक्खवे, मिच्छासमाधि वन्तो होति … सम्माञाणिस्स, भिक्खवे, मिच्छाञाणं वन्तं होति …पे…।
Sammāsaṅkappassa, bhikkhave, micchāsaṅkappo vanto hoti …pe… sammāvācassa, bhikkhave, micchāvācā vantā hoti … sammākammantassa, bhikkhave, micchākammanto vanto hoti … sammāājīvassa, bhikkhave, micchāājīvo vanto hoti … sammāvāyāmassa, bhikkhave, micchāvāyāmo vanto hoti … sammāsatissa, bhikkhave, micchāsati vantā hoti … sammāsamādhissa, bhikkhave, micchāsamādhi vanto hoti … sammāñāṇissa, bhikkhave, micchāñāṇaṁ vantaṁ hoti …pe….
For one of right thought, wrong thought is vomited up. … For one of right speech, wrong speech is vomited up. … For one of right action, wrong action is vomited up. … For one of right livelihood, wrong livelihood is vomited up. … For one of right effort, wrong effort is vomited up. … For one of right mindfulness, wrong mindfulness is vomited up. … For one of right immersion, wrong immersion is vomited up. … For one of right knowledge, wrong knowledge is vomited up. …
सम्माविमुत्तिस्स, भिक्खवे, मिच्छाविमुत्ति वन्ता होति; ये च मिच्छाविमुत्तिपच्चया अनेके पापका अकुसला धम्मा सम्भवन्ति ते चस्स वन्ता होन्ति; सम्माविमुत्तिपच्चया च अनेके कुसला धम्मा भावनापारिपूरिं गच्छन्ति। इदं खो तं, भिक्खवे, अरियं वमनं यं वमनं सम्पज्जतियेव नो विपज्जति, यं वमनं आगम्म जातिधम्मा सत्ता जातिया परिमुच्चन्ति …पे… सोकपरिदेवदुक्खदोमनस्सुपायासेहि परिमुच्चन्ती”ति।
Sammāvimuttissa, bhikkhave, micchāvimutti vantā hoti; ye ca micchāvimuttipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti te cassa vantā honti; sammāvimuttipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti. Idaṁ kho taṁ, bhikkhave, ariyaṁ vamanaṁ yaṁ vamanaṁ sampajjatiyeva no vipajjati, yaṁ vamanaṁ āgamma jātidhammā sattā jātiyā parimuccanti …pe… sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsehi parimuccantī”ti.
For one of right freedom, wrong freedom is vomited up. And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by wrong freedom are vomited up. And because of right freedom, many skillful qualities are fully developed. This is the noble emetic that works without fail. Relying on this emetic, sentient beings who are liable to rebirth, old age, and death, to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are freed from all these things.”
