    अथ खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Then Venerable Sāriputta went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

    “को नु खो, भन्ते, हेतु को पच्चयो, येन मिधेकच्चस्स तादिसाव वणिज्जा पयुत्ता छेदगामिनी होति? को पन, भन्ते, हेतु को पच्चयो, येन मिधेकच्चस्स तादिसाव वणिज्जा पयुत्ता न यथाधिप्पाया होति? को नु खो, भन्ते, हेतु को पच्चयो, येन मिधेकच्चस्स तादिसाव वणिज्जा पयुत्ता यथाधिप्पाया होति? को पन, भन्ते, हेतु को पच्चयो, येन मिधेकच्चस्स तादिसाव वणिज्जा पयुत्ता पराधिप्पाया होती”ति?

    “ko nu kho, bhante, hetu ko paccayo, yena midhekaccassa tādisāva vaṇijjā payuttā chedagāminī hoti? Ko pana, bhante, hetu ko paccayo, yena midhekaccassa tādisāva vaṇijjā payuttā na yathādhippāyā1 hoti? Ko nu kho, bhante, hetu ko paccayo, yena midhekaccassa tādisāva vaṇijjā payuttā yathādhippāyā2 hoti? Ko pana, bhante, hetu ko paccayo, yena midhekaccassa tādisāva vaṇijjā payuttā parādhippāyā hotī”ti?

    “Sir, what is the cause, what is the reason why for different people the same kind of business undertaking might fail, while another doesn’t meet expectations, another meets expectations, and another exceeds expectations?”

    “इध, सारिपुत्त, एकच्चो समणं वा ब्राह्मणं वा उपसङ्कमित्वा पवारेति: ‘वदतु, भन्ते, पच्चयेनाऽति। सो येन पवारेति तं न देति। सो चे ततो चुतो इत्थत्तं आगच्छति, सो यञ्ञदेव वणिज्जं पयोजेति, सास्स होति छेदगामिनी।

    “Idha, sāriputta, ekacco samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā upasaṅkamitvā pavāreti: ‘vadatu, bhante, paccayenā’ti. So yena pavāreti taṁ na deti. So ce tato cuto itthattaṁ āgacchati, so yaññadeva vaṇijjaṁ payojeti, sāssa hoti chedagāminī.

    “Sāriputta, take a case where someone goes to an ascetic or brahmin and invites them to ask for what they need. But they fail to give what’s requested. When they’ve passed away from that life, if they’re reborn in this state of existence, whatever business they undertake fails.

    इध पन, सारिपुत्त, एकच्चो समणं वा ब्राह्मणं वा उपसङ्कमित्वा पवारेति: ‘वदतु, भन्ते, पच्चयेनाऽति। सो येन पवारेति तं न यथाधिप्पायं देति। सो चे ततो चुतो इत्थत्तं आगच्छति, सो यञ्ञदेव वणिज्जं पयोजेति, सास्स न होति यथाधिप्पाया।

    Take a case where someone goes to an ascetic or brahmin and invites them to ask for what they need. They give what’s requested, exceeding expectations. When they’ve passed away from that life, if they’re reborn in this state of existence, whatever business they undertake exceeds expectations.

    अयं खो, सारिपुत्त, हेतु अयं पच्चयो, येन मिधेकच्चस्स तादिसाव वणिज्जा पयुत्ता छेदगामिनी होति। अयं पन, सारिपुत्त, हेतु अयं पच्चयो, येन मिधेकच्चस्स तादिसाव वणिज्जा पयुत्ता न यथाधिप्पाया होति। अयं खो पन, सारिपुत्त, हेतु अयं पच्चयो, येन मिधेकच्चस्स तादिसाव वणिज्जा पयुत्ता यथाधिप्पाया होति। अयं पन, सारिपुत्त, हेतु अयं पच्चयो, येन मिधेकच्चस्स तादिसाव वणिज्जा पयुत्ता पराधिप्पाया होती”ति।

    Ayaṁ kho, sāriputta, hetu ayaṁ paccayo, yena midhekaccassa tādisāva vaṇijjā payuttā chedagāminī hoti. Ayaṁ pana, sāriputta, hetu ayaṁ paccayo, yena midhekaccassa tādisāva vaṇijjā payuttā na yathādhippāyā hoti. Ayaṁ kho pana, sāriputta, hetu ayaṁ paccayo, yena midhekaccassa tādisāva vaṇijjā payuttā yathādhippāyā hoti. Ayaṁ pana, sāriputta, hetu ayaṁ paccayo, yena midhekaccassa tādisāva vaṇijjā payuttā parādhippāyā hotī”ti.

    This is the cause, this is the reason why for different people the same kind of business undertaking might fail, while another doesn’t meet expectations, another meets expectations, and another exceeds expectations.”
