Opportunities for Freedom
“पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, विमुत्तायतनानि यत्थ भिक्खुनो अप्पमत्तस्स आतापिनो पहितत्तस्स विहरतो अविमुत्तं वा चित्तं विमुच्चति, अपरिक्खीणा वा आसवा परिक्खयं गच्छन्ति, अननुप्पत्तं वा अनुत्तरं योगक्खेमं अनुपापुणाति। कतमानि पञ्च?
“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, vimuttāyatanāni yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttaṁ vā cittaṁ vimuccati, aparikkhīṇā vā āsavā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ananuppattaṁ vā anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ anupāpuṇāti. Katamāni pañca?
“Bhikkhus, there are these five opportunities for freedom. If a bhikkhu stays diligent, keen, and resolute at these times, their mind is freed, their defilements are ended, and they arrive at the supreme sanctuary from the yoke. What five?
इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो सत्था धम्मं देसेति अञ्ञतरो वा गरुट्ठानियो सब्रह्मचारी। यथा यथा, भिक्खवे, तस्स भिक्खुनो सत्था धम्मं देसेति, अञ्ञतरो वा गरुट्ठानियो सब्रह्मचारी तथा तथा सो तस्मिं धम्मे अत्थपटिसंवेदी च होति धम्मपटिसंवेदी च। तस्स अत्थपटिसंवेदिनो धम्मपटिसंवेदिनो पामोज्जं जायति। पमुदितस्स पीति जायति। पीतिमनस्स कायो पस्सम्भति। पस्सद्धकायो सुखं वेदेति। सुखिनो चित्तं समाधियति। इदं, भिक्खवे, पठमं विमुत्तायतनं यत्थ भिक्खुनो अप्पमत्तस्स आतापिनो पहितत्तस्स विहरतो अविमुत्तं वा चित्तं विमुच्चति, अपरिक्खीणा वा आसवा परिक्खयं गच्छन्ति, अननुप्पत्तं वा अनुत्तरं योगक्खेमं अनुपापुणाति।
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno satthā dhammaṁ deseti aññataro vā garuṭṭhāniyo sabrahmacārī. Yathā yathā, bhikkhave, tassa bhikkhuno satthā dhammaṁ deseti, aññataro vā garuṭṭhāniyo sabrahmacārī tathā tathā so tasmiṁ dhamme atthapaṭisaṁvedī ca hoti dhammapaṭisaṁvedī ca. Tassa atthapaṭisaṁvedino dhammapaṭisaṁvedino pāmojjaṁ1 jāyati. Pamuditassa pīti jāyati. Pītimanassa kāyo passambhati. Passaddhakāyo sukhaṁ vedeti. Sukhino cittaṁ samādhiyati. Idaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamaṁ vimuttāyatanaṁ yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttaṁ vā cittaṁ vimuccati, aparikkhīṇā vā āsavā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ananuppattaṁ vā anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ anupāpuṇāti.
Firstly, the Teacher or a respected spiritual companion teaches Dhamma to a bhikkhu. That bhikkhu feels inspired by the meaning and the teaching in that Dhamma, no matter how the Teacher or a respected spiritual companion teaches it. Feeling inspired, joy springs up. Being joyful, rapture springs up. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. When the body is tranquil, one feels bliss. And when blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi. This is the first opportunity for freedom. If a bhikkhu stays diligent, keen, and resolute at this time, their mind is freed, their defilements are ended, and they arrive at the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.

Furthermore, it may be that neither the Teacher nor a respected spiritual companion teaches Dhamma to a bhikkhu. But the bhikkhu teaches Dhamma in detail to others as they learned and memorized it. That bhikkhu feels inspired by the meaning and the teaching in that Dhamma, no matter how they teach it in detail to others as they learned and memorized it. Feeling inspired, joy springs up. Being joyful, rapture springs up. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. When the body is tranquil, one feels bliss. And when blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi. Furthermore, it may be that neither the Teacher nor … the bhikkhu teaches Dhamma. But the bhikkhu recites the teaching in detail as they learned and memorized it. That bhikkhu feels inspired by the meaning and the teaching in that Dhamma, no matter how they recite it in detail as they learned and memorized it. Feeling inspired, joy springs up. Being joyful, rapture springs up. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. When the body is tranquil, one feels bliss. And when blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi. This is the third opportunity for freedom. …

Tassa atthapaṭisaṁvedino dhammapaṭisaṁvedino pāmojjaṁ jāyati. Pamuditassa pīti jāyati. Pītimanassa kāyo passambhati. Passaddhakāyo sukhaṁ vedeti. Sukhino cittaṁ samādhiyati. Idaṁ, bhikkhave, catutthaṁ vimuttāyatanaṁ yattha bhikkhuno appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato avimuttaṁ vā cittaṁ vimuccati, aparikkhīṇā vā āsavā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ananuppattaṁ vā anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ anupāpuṇāti.
Furthermore, it may be that neither the Teacher nor … the bhikkhu teaches Dhamma … nor does the bhikkhu recite the teaching. But the bhikkhu thinks about and considers the teaching in their heart, examining it with the mind as they learned and memorized it. That bhikkhu feels inspired by the meaning and the teaching in that Dhamma, no matter how they think about and consider it in their heart, examining it with the mind as they learned and memorized it. Feeling inspired, joy springs up. Being joyful, rapture springs up. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. When the body is tranquil, one feels bliss. And when blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi. This is the fourth opportunity for freedom. …

But a meditation subject as a foundation of immersion is properly grasped, focused on, borne in mind, and comprehended with wisdom. That bhikkhu feels inspired by the meaning and the teaching in that Dhamma, no matter how a meditation subject as a foundation of immersion is properly grasped, focused on, borne in mind, and comprehended with wisdom. Feeling inspired, joy springs up. Being joyful, rapture springs up. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. When the body is tranquil, one feels bliss. And when blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi. This is the fifth opportunity for freedom. …
